To reduce the number of "I'm moving to the Hudson Valley, can anyone tell me about X?" posts, we are starting a monthly megathread. All questions asking about moving to the Hudson Valley should be kept within the monthly thread. Posts outside of the thread will be removed.
Here are a few existing threads that I found using this search:
Locals, if you want to help make this megathread a success, you can do a few things:

Hoping someone may have seen my wife’s hat. It belonged to her grandmother and is irreplaceable to her.
The last place she remembers seeing it was under the seat on our United flight from Austin to Newark on October 21, 2026. We’re unsure whether it stayed on the plane or came with us afterward.
During our October 21–25 trip, we stayed at The Dutchess Inn in Beacon and stopped at a Trader Joe’s on the way to the Catskills. We also picked up a rental car from Dollar at Newark Airport, so we’re checking those places too.
It’s a black felt hat with a wide, slightly floppy brim and distinctive white/gray feathers, along with smaller brown and reddish feathers. The photos show the exact missing hat.
We’ve already contacted United, Newark Airport lost-and-found, Dollar, and the inn, but wanted to reach people in the Hudson Valley in case it turns up locally.
If you’ve seen it or know where it was turned in, please DM me. We’d happily pay shipping to get it home. Thank you!

We're flying to Florida mid November to visit some family, and I'm trying to figure out what to bring them from the area. I'm looking for gift ideas for 2 adults and 1 minor- something that would transfer well on a plane, be semi-unique to this area, and not easily found in Florida. So far my only idea is a bottle from Hudson Whiskey and maybe some apple cider donuts, but I'm not sure how well those would travel. We're flying out of Stewart and also working the day we fly out, so grabbing some bagels from NYC would be too logistically inconvenient.

Town Hall was so busy that I couldn't even get in the parking lot. I'll try again tomorrow. Turn out looks tremendous. Anyone see the same at other early voting locations?
Also, why are there signs for that putz Mike Lawler all over the road in front of Town Hall? Do his people not know where his district is?

Q: What are your favorite bars and restaurants that are decidedly NOT targeting out-of-towners?
Has anyone seen this article making the rounds on social media? A (presumably) Brooklyn resident lectures locals on how we have no taste and our entire dining scene is bootleg Brooklyn to appeal to the Brooklyn weekenders, and the ONLY good restaurant north of Westchester is Silvia because the chef worked in the city for 20 years.
Tl;dr: We should bow down in thanks to the tourists who come up here once a year to throw money at our sad simulacra of a dining scene.
While I hate this guy's shitty tone and comically limited context, I have to concede:
- A lot of people came/come up here wanting it to look exactly like what they have at home. Some hospitality brands cater to that to disappointing results.
- Roughly 75% more people have moved to the Hudson Valley than have left since 202, and a lot of them are from the boroughs.
- About half of restaurant revenue comes from non-residents.
This guy's problem is that the Hudson Valley was sold to him as "Brooklyn North" and it's not Brooklyn (read: good) enough. It's like complaining that Mexico City didn't meet standards set by the EPCOT Mexico pavilion.
That's a *him* problem. The real problem is that so many businesses' survival is dependent on a small amount of people over a short period of time. That's a real problem, and one we need to work on as a community.
ETA: I can't believe this got almost 100 comments overnight! For all of you who want to support local food & bev businesses (plus music and some related volunteering stuff) I write a weekly newsletter about just that.

Of course this is the first weekday of early voting but I’m surprised just how long the lines are at 1 in the afternoon. Hope this turnout continues.

Hi there, my phone needs a new battery, does anyone have any recommendations? Best Buy has ruined two phones on me so I won’t go there.
Has anyone used Ben’s Irepair in Middletown?
I’m in the Middletown area so that’s most convenient, but not necessarily a must be location.
Thanks! :)

Hi -- I'm looking for an artist's studio space on Warren St. Any suggestions? For people who have studio space there, how did you go about getting it?
Thanks!

What a lovely weekend Hudson Valley staycation! We spent 2 nights in an adorable one-room lakeside cabin in Valatie, NY (pronounced vuh-lay-shuh, I now know!)
Included in our stay were stops at:
📍 Knickerbocker Lake,
📍 Blue Moon Chocolate & Gifts,
📍 The Attic thrift boutique,
📍 Magdalendas Mexican Restaurant,
📍 Show Pony Wines & Spirits, and
📍 the Golden Harvest farm market.
In addition we had a lot of time to rest and reflect on how lucky we are to live in this beautiful place, New York’s epic unbeatable gorgeous Hudson Valley!! Enjoy the pics!

I may go with a bunch of friends, but wanted to double check on feedback before planning. The overall google review score seems good, but some of the negative reviews make me wonder if we should skip.
Given admission is almost 30 bucks, I want to be sure its worth it for everyone. Also, care to recommend a good place to eat nearby as well?

I voted early yesterday in Dutchess County and quite a few people in line had heard or been told, incorrectly, that there was only one day for early voting. Spread the word: early voting is open every day from now until Nov 1st, generally 9AM-5PM but on a few days Noon-8PM. Locations and times at the Board of Elections website: https://elections.dutchessny.gov/early-voting/

We had a hankering for ice cream last night and as we left our house on Lucas Avenue we saw a car careen into the parking lot at the tennis courts. A woman got out, talking on the phone. I thought that was kinda weird, but then I thought it was really strange that she went onto the riser between the courts and sidewalk because it’s at least 10 feet up. Wouldn’t want to walk there in the dark! As we drove by we saw her futzing with the campaign placards. I took these photos this morning.
I called and emailed the Ulster County BOE to ask if I could put the signs side by side equally visible. and they told me I was not permitted to touch them if they were not on my property. I said that someone came and moved them last night and it was not their property. I asked if the BOE would arrange the signs equally and they wouldn’t give me an answer. Anyway. Feels bad.
FYI: Tampering/removing/vandalizing political placards on someone else’s property is a Class A Misdemeanor in NYS.
Update: the BOE commissioner got back to me by email and said if it was on “open land” I was allowed to move signs. That’s cool to know!

Hi everyone! I’m looking to get back into singing and wondering what options are in the area? I’m definitely more of a choir or opera girl so that would be first choice, but I’d love to know what is available to check out! Also, I’m 42 and hoping to find something with people around my age. Thanks!
