I was travelling in subway metro from Gangnam to DDP with my wife and 2.5 year old toddler. A Korean senior citizen gave my daughter 2k won. Is it some culture related thing or he just found us poor may be (being browns may be)? We respectfully denied but we felt we might have sounded rude.
Edit: well it was our first time in Korea, people were super nice. Had no idea about this custom. Extremely sorry.

I got muted there for calling out racism. Had a post earlier talking about racism to them had so many people in the comments thread saying such racist things against other countries. Doesn’t only happen there. In the other similar subreddits you can see it often in posts like which country did you not like, guaranteed always racists in the comments. Hate when it happens to them but when they do it it’s different. Often racist towards East Asians and foreigners. If you find the posts and comments you will get auto-removed in their safe space. Fighting racism with racism

Taken from my home in Yongdam-dong, Jeju City, on Jeju Island, South Korea.
Fishing boat lights toward the sea, planes approaching the nearby airport, and a little pavilion glowing among the trees.
I moved here in 2019, but familiar evenings like this still make me reach for my camera.
While I was winding down at home, someone offshore was beginning another working night.
What’s one ordinary view near your home that you never get tired of? ^^

I was just passing by a completely ordinary apartment complex, but the streetlights and the autumn leaves were so beautiful.
Come to think of it, life has so many beautiful things around us, but I feel like we often fail to see or feel them because they are too close and familiar.
It’s really sad because people these days seem so dry, exhausted, and defensive.
I think enjoying these little moments and giving yourself some breathing room is just as important as it is necessary. This, too, is a true form of self-protection.
I just wanted to share this. Hope everyone is having a peaceful evening. ✨

I've enlisted the help of koreanapostille.com to help me obtain this. The reasons are my Korean isn't that great and I've got way too many things going on right now to pay visits to the Korean embassy. When my dad came to the US, his Korean name became this middle name. In some documents it's his middle initial. In other documents it's his Korean name spelled out.
Koreanapostille.com asked me to upload a photo ID that had his Korean name on it. So I uploaded his Korean passport. They told me the Korean government rejected it -- they think it's because there was "void" on it. It says "void" because it's an old passport.
btw, my dad left Korea in the early 60s and is a US citizen. So finding official documents with his Korean name is impossible for me. I thought the Korean passport would suffice.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I’m visiting Suwon right now and these blinking lights have been in the sky for at least an hour. I don’t think it’s a plane because it’s been hovering around the same spot this whole time. Although when I zoom in, the body does appear to be vaguely boomerang
-shaped. Do any Suwon locals know what this is? Hopefully not aliens! TIA

Both Hong-koo and his son Barton Lee, also known as Hyun-woo, attended Yale University before the latter’s daughter, Lynn Lee, recently graduated.
Barton is an investment banker, currently serving as managing director and head of Asia for EIG in Hong Kong.
Winston’s mother, Ji Young Hwang, serves as president of the nonprofit organization Korean Women’s Association of Hong Kong.
While Winston, 23, continues to grapple with the allegations, reports revealed that his sister, Lynn Lee, 24, was a part-time communication and consent educator at Yale University.
She worked to “foster a more positive s**ual and social climate on campus,” according to the school’s website.
Until last May, Lynn organized events and workshops to “help students identify troubled social and s**ual dynamics and develop skills for effective interventions,” according to the history graduate’s social media.
His affluent family has hired the Manhattan law firm Agnifilo Intrater, which previously defended disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and jailed rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.

Hello,
My cousin recently gave birth and I am trying to send her gifts. How can I send gifts to her? It seems amazon is not operational in SK. Are there any local websites I could use to do it?
Thank you!

A Korean culture I still can't wrap my head around
I'm Korean, but I lived abroad for about 16 years and only recently moved back to Korea.
One thing that's been giving me reverse culture shock is the wedding invitation culture here.
Someone I've only known for about two months, and I'm not even particularly close to, sent me a wedding invitation. We work for the same company, but we don't really work together. We mostly just see each other on the shuttle to and from work.
What surprised me even more was that the invitation included a bank account number for sending congratulatory money (축의금).
Maybe living abroad for so long changed my perspective, but the whole thing feels really strange to me lol.
If we're not close enough that you would normally invite me to something personal, why send me a wedding invitation at all? And when the invitation comes with a bank account number, I can't help but feel like, "Wait... are you inviting me because you actually want me there, or are you just collecting wedding money?" 😂
I asked some people around me, and apparently even if you're not close to the person, a lot of Koreans will still send around 50,000 won ($35-ish) as a courtesy.
I'm not saying people are necessarily sending invitations just for money. I know it's simply part of Korean social etiquette and wedding culture.
But after spending so many years outside Korea, coming back and experiencing it again feels incredibly weird.
Does this kind of thing exist in other countries too? Do you give wedding money to coworkers or acquaintances you're barely close to?

Another case of an alleged drugging and raping at a T20 university by a SFS grad. Kevin Shim (SFS CO25), now at the University of Chicago (CO29), is named in an October 2026 civil lawsuit. The suit alleges that Kevin Shim drugged and sexually assaulted a 19-year-old student at the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity house on February 7, 2026. This case is crazy considering the recent Cornell 7 case involved Winston Lee, also an SFS alumnus facing high-profile rape allegations. Alpha Delta Phi has suspended Shim while the civil litigation proceeds. While this hasn’t been picked up by social media yet, people need to know who he is. He has privated every social media account, linkedin profile, overall footprint and gone into hiding. This needs to stop. https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/university-of-chicago-to-public-safety-meeting-sexual-assault-allegations/

Tension along Korean border fuels concern as Kim Jong Un's sister issues "not a threat, but a clear warning"
