Newfoundland & Labrador | NL Meat the Mealy Mountains...
This massif of incredibly rough mountains is located south of Melville Lake in Labrador. It represents the Eastern end of the Billion years old Laurentian mountains (Grenville Orogeny), which may reach as far West as Lake Huron, and may or may not (no real concensus here...) include the Adirondacks in NY.
For the sake of this post, let's say this ancient range - which may have reached Himalayans heights nearly one Gya - was confined to Québec, save for the Labrador mountains above. It has since been grinded down to what almost looks like a legally binding maximum altitude of 1199 meters, a ceiling that also applies... to just about every mountain/range/rock formation south of the 55th parallel N, regardless of their age and/or nature.
Those very diverse formations have ages varying between... 2Ga to 1Ga to 450Ma to 380Ma to 100Ma to... (ok nothing really younger than that, besides many icing/de-icing cycles crammed within the last 3Ma or so... because...3, 2, 1: CANADIAN SHIELD!)
There's ONE exception, ONE tight spot where altitudes goes from 1202 to 1276m. It isn't the Mealy Mountains, though they sure come close, with a dozen 1100ers and countless 1000ers.
Oupss... This isn't a geology sub, is it? Anyway, those Mealy Mountains are still worth a look...
