ANNOUNCEMENT Community Announcement: AskMenOver30 Flair

Hey, everyone. Friendly neighborhood moderator here.

Let's talk about flair - user fialr, and post flair.

User Flair

User flair is the icon or text that appears next to your username in a community. User flair is once again required to make top-level comments in AskMenOver30 threads. If a user posts a top-level comment in the subreddit without flair, it will be automatically removed by the subreddit filters. Please set your flair before posting.

We understand that it can be frustrating to craft a comment and then lose it. We are updating the Automoderator rules to include the test you posted so that you can easily resubmit it after setting your user flair.

If you're unsure how to set your flair, see this Reddit support link to learn how to set your user flair in AskMenOver30.

There seems to be a problem with setting user flair on the mobile app. This is not something that the moderator team can fix. If you have trouble setting your flair on mobile, please try setting your user flair on the desktop site - https://www.reddit.com.

Post Flair

Post flair is the icon or text that appears next to a post that a user makes in the subreddit. All post submissions require flair; these flairs allow us to categorize and filter the content on the subreddit. Flair Search is available in New Reddit and on the mobile platform; the subreddit provides filtering links in the sidebar Old Reddit.

We've been updating the post fialr so that posts can be more easily categorized and still stay relevant to men over 30. The current flair list is as follows:

  • WEEKLY THREAD: For recurring posts. Currently, we have a Weekly Check-in thread; in the future, we may have more weekly threads.
  • Careers Jobs Work
  • Friendships/Community: Topics about interpersonal, non-romantic relationships and socializing. Don't use this fialr for anything romance-related.
  • Physical Health & Aging
  • Financial Experiences
  • Legal Experiences
  • Mental Health Experiences
  • Hobbies/Projects: Topics and questions about hobbies or projects. Working on something cool and want to show us? Use this flair. Want to talk shop with other like-minded folks? Use this flair. Have a question about how to break into new hobbies or over 30? Use this flair.
  • Household & Family: Recently added. Many of us at this age have to deal with building and maintaining a household and supporting a family; use this flair for topics related to this.
  • Fatherhood & Children: Recently added. These relationships are really important; any topics related to fatherhood, child-rearing, or even being a son and interacting with one's father should land here.
  • Handyman/mechanic/other skills
  • Romance/dating: Topics related to a significant other or romance in general belong here. This is not a dating subreddit. Questions about generalizations based on gender are just tiring. If you want advice on a specific person, you should ask that person instead. If your post intersects with other topics but the primary driver is an interpersonal romantic relationship, it probably belongs here.
  • Community Chat: Sometimes we get fun questions that are just to spark discussion. They go here.
  • Life
  • General

Please do not abuse the flair system. Most of the time, this is not a problem, but we have been seeing misflaired posts. For example, a post that is clearly related to "Romance/Dating" should not be fialred with "Friendships/Community" or any other flair. We periodically review and recategorize posts as necessary, but please help us keep the categories clean and relevant to our community. Doing this helps us keep AekMenOver30 a positive space for older dudes, and a peaceful space for men and women to discuss topics relevant to men over 30.

Thanks for reading. Happy posting, everyone.

Career Jobs Work Can I pivot careers without going for more schooling? If so, how?

I'm 27k in student loan debt, with no job, no savings, two swe internships on my resume, projects, and a useless cs bachelor's degree from 2025.

I got absolutely no call backs for anything my senior year or for the year post graduation. My "new grad" status expired a long time ago.

To pursue another career I'd need to go back to school for another bachelor's or masters degree, which I do not have the ability to do. The only work experience I have is in this field, I have absolutely no substantial skillset or work experience outside tech.

Going to food service, warehouse, retail, and other minimum wage types of jobs won't help long term. I don't see how going for another degree/field will really change anything. I put in the best effort I could have for this one. The job market will change again, I once again will be shamed for "not having enough experience", I again will be buried in more student debt.

What should I do after having burned and destroyed my career, my future, my life?

Life Anybody spent many years attempting to improve their life, but found it just hasn't worked?

Eg

Considered joining the military. Can't due to disqualifying health problems.

Spent most of my 20s on self-improvement. As in, working on something every day (social skills, learning an instrument, drawing, new exercises, cooking, whatever I could think of to work on).

Considered apprenticeships. Most need you to be able to afford to live on 50% min wage for a year. Most of the others ned a driving licence (costs about £2000 to get in the UK, never been affordable for me even when working, due to high rents when I lived alone). Couple others got close to getting, but always second choice at best (and the opportunities come up once a year).

Ask a friend (started adulthood with one friend, after experiencing coercive control for the first few years of adulthood. As in, to the level where the police asked me if I wanted to press charges) if they want to start a local business and do a bunch of research into ideas, but they have no drive to get a better I clem because they live comfortably with their family of origin. No siblings or cousins to ask.

Obviously social or sports hobbies fall to the wayside when younger with poor income or poor work-life balance (long commutes. Have to take the jobs you can get).

Became homeless, finally had the financial freedom to volunteer rather than searching for dead end work, with the plan to do that for a year and then go to university and do social work. Seemed like a huge opportunity (ironically the more well-behaved and positive you are and the more you've historically stayed away from vices like alcohol, the less you qualify for help. Your resilience turns into a negative). Applied for volunteering - the one that considered taking me on told told me no due to living in a shared house (privacy concerns). Applied for 6 voluntary roles in the last 8 months, nothing so far.

Making friends is tough without money, as you need to be around the same people repeatedly. You'll see some people in the same jobs, spending their initial adulthood years living with parents and in that case money isn't an impediment.

I tend to see the advice that "you need to make change". That puts the focus on willpower. Some people recommend therapy. Unfortunately, therapy doesn't open doors and it's against their rules to give advice for new ideas to try (and in the UK getting therapy is usually a few years wait. An ADHD diagnosis took 8 years to get, still waiting on medication after 10 years).

I've always been more driven and more meticulous (eg about budgeting, keeping healthy) than most people I knew, but just worse conditions to work with.

Career Jobs Work Don't know how to turn life around

I'm a 30 year old male with a meager work history and running out of options to turn my life around.

I struggled in college (statistics and communications classes especially), and didn't graduate until I was 25. I was able to get a cushy corporate job a few months after graduate, but flaked on the company. Whenever I got a good job, I'm there for a few months, feel incompetent and antisocial, ghost the job and get fired. I've managed to get three corporate jobs doing this, but the total experience is only like 11-12 months spread across three years. My mental health and focus are a bit better now, but I believe my reputation is kind of shot in this industry (operations management/supply chain).

I tried pivoting into mechanical work and took a 12 week maintenance fundamentals course at this adult education/trade school. Got a facilities maintenance job, but it caps my hours at 29 a week and offers no benefits at all. I was considering taking a 12 week introduction to PLCs course this coming winter to get into the automation/manufacturing industry, but I'm not particularly driven or passionate about it.

Outside of those, I've been told I'm a decent writer. Good at researching and distilling complex information when given the time. I've written a few articles for an environmental advocacy group, helped edit some articles, and daydream about creating my own comics and art with writing lol...

To top it off, I still live at home, no insurance currently, old ass car, and dependent on parents who are retiring soon.

Simply put, I don't know which of these is worth pursuing because I can find faults each and know it's difficult to be taken seriously or given a job opportunity with my past history and lack of essential skills. My dad keeps suggesting going back to school to reset, but that's just more debt with no work experience to me. But I'm open to your thoughts.

Career Jobs Work 32-year-old realtor in Chicago looking for a career change. Has anyone been in this position?

I’m 32 years old and recently moved to Chicago, coming up on a year here. I’ve been a realtor for almost four years now, and lately, I’ve been feeling like I’m hitting a wall with this career.

Overall, I’ve done okay for myself, so I’m not necessarily in a bad financial position. However, the constant uncertainty of not knowing where my next paycheck is coming from is starting to wear on me. The highs and lows of commission-based income, constantly having to find the next client, and never really feeling financially settled have me questioning whether this is something I want to continue doing long-term.

At this point, I’m seriously considering a career change. I don’t necessarily want to leave real estate entirely, especially since I’m already licensed in Illinois, but I think my days of dealing with residential rentals and home sales might be coming to an end.

I’ve been thinking about other paths within real estate, potentially commercial real estate, property management, real estate asset management, or something else entirely that offers more stability and a predictable paycheck. I’m also open to exploring industries outside of real estate if the right opportunity makes sense.

Fortunately, I’ve built up a pretty substantial nest egg, so I have some financial breathing room to figure out my next move without feeling like I need to jump into the first thing that comes along. I want to be smart about this and find something I can build a long-term career around.

For those who have been in a similar position, I’d love to hear your experiences.

  • Have any of you left residential real estate and transitioned into something else?
  • If you stayed in real estate, what career paths did you move into that offered more stability and consistent income?
  • For those who left the industry entirely, what did you transition into, and how did you get your foot in the door?
  • If you were 32, had a real estate background, and were starting to feel burned out by the commission-based lifestyle, what would you look into?

I know real estate can be lucrative, and I’m not saying it’s a bad career. I’m just realizing that the lifestyle and uncertainty might not be for me anymore.

I’d really appreciate any honest advice, personal experiences, or suggestions. I’m at a point where I’m ready to explore something new, but I want to make an informed decision rather than jumping ship without a plan.

Life Lots of free time this college semester – what to do?

I'm a computer science student in my early 20s. I failed 3 classes last year and I have to retake them to get my degree. Because of that, my current timetable is super lax – I have only 3 days with any classes and week-to-week homework takes me an additional day or so. I will take on a job in four months and I have financial support for the meantime.

I don't wanna spend all of that time just scrolling Reddit, what do you think would be a good idea to do with it?

What I came up with is: learning a computer skill college doesn't teach me, physical exercise, doing a personal project, volunteering for a good cause (helping people, not activism), visiting my city's museums. But maybe you guys have some advice.

(All the en-dashes in this post were human-generated. I just like good spelling.)

Edit: (so far) my learning doesn't take all that time – and I'm getting good results with the work I put in. Of the three classes I failed only one is hard, the rest were collateral due to poor time management.

Career Jobs Work 29 still working labor jobs .. how to turn life around?

My life flipped upside down since the last year of high school. Didn't graduate high school because father at that time got a massive stroke and I became caretaker for few years but sadly passed away. I started working at fast food near my area and went to school to get my high school diploma. Eventually joined community college but since I don't drive I was taking some classes online. Still with no support and guidance on career paths. I randomly started taking classes for a radiology tech program. Because everyone around me were saying healthcare is good and versatile. You'll have good pay and full time job. But for some reason I also gave up on studies because I failed one math class and college advisor thought I won't make it so she suggested to switch another program or go to university.

I later started working here and there but felt miserable in life. No support and guidance and lack of self belief made me felt like a loser. So I started working at retail store. But every year I noticed goes by the same. No sign of growth and improvement. Recently mother passed away and now me and my siblings who are young are trying to navigate life. Still have no clue what to do.

I don't want to work trade jobs. Many suggested do some course online or get an associate degree. There is I.t. , healthcare, business, insurance and so on jobs that are good and eventually you could work your way up. But such things like Ai and job market being tough it's difficult which path to take and which industry to look into. I'm also figuring out small ways to make side income possibly doing Uber. I feel small towards others my age and younger because somehow in society I have no identity and status. Don't have a professional degree and a job. So it feels shameful and embarrassing like everyone out here has something going on meanwhile I'm adult still have no clue how to settle down and being a capable worthy person.

Friendships/Community Anyone Else Finding It Hard to Make Friends in Their 30s?

Hey, it’s Andy (or Andrew)! I’m 32 and honestly finding it really hard to meet new people, find a friendship group, or even just someone to chat with.

It feels like making friends gets so much harder as you get older!

A bit about me: I enjoy swimming, photography, gaming, music, cooking, hiking, and sports.

I’m just looking to meet some genuine people, have a laugh, chat about life, and hopefully build some good friendships.

If you’re in the same boat or just fancy a chat, feel free to reach out! It would be nice to meet people who are also looking to make new friends.

Friendships/Community We all achieved our middle-class dreams. Now we barely have time to see each other. Anyone else

I have a group of close male friends, some of whom I've known since elementary school. We basically grew up together. We partied, traveled, chased girls, started our careers, and eventually started families.

We all grew up in lower-middle-class families, and back then we dreamed of having our own houses, decent jobs, wives, kids, and a comfortable life.
Well, we actually made it. We're all around 40 now, with families, kids, houses, and reasonably successful careers. We even live within 50 km of each other, so roughly an hour's drive at most.

And yet, we barely see each other anymore.
Everyone is so caught up in work, raising kids, maintaining their houses, fixing stuff, mowing lawns, and dealing with the endless list of responsibilities that somehow nobody has time for anything.
We try to organize one big backyard BBQ every summer, and that's pretty much it. The rest of the year, we're all living our separate little suburban lives.

The irony is that we spent our youth dreaming of exactly the lives we have now, only to discover that they leave us almost no time to enjoy our friendships.

Is this just what being a 40-year-old suburban dad looks like these days? Or have we somehow made our lives unnecessarily complicated?

I'm genuinely curious how other guys with families, houses, and full-time jobs manage to maintain their old friendships. Do you actually see your friends regularly, or has it also become a once-or-twice-a-year thing?

Mental health experiences How do you learn to be mentally tough as you grow older?

The one thing I learned about growing up, is that your feelings matter less and less as you grow older, but I guess the kid in me never really learned that fact fully, I'm constantly feeling tired/exhausted, but I still have to do the work/action despite it, I haven't managed to have a 'good' life, don't have any friends, but I don't think I'll be met with any advice apart from 'man up', so how do you exactly do it, how do you remain mentally well, despite being psychologically tortured by life?

Friendships/Community I’m struggling to connect with people as I get older, have you experienced similar?

I thankfully still have a lot of friends that I’ve known from high school, college and work around the world and in the city I live in.

But as I get older, whether it’s new people I meet or current friends I have, I notice I struggle to connect with people during conversations. Like I’m going through the motions and doing fake reactions at times. It’s not black and white, some conversations I do get more engaged with but a lot of the time it feels like I’m half not wanting to have the conversation, or waiting for someone to get to the point.

Sometimes it’s anxiety or discomfort with myself but it’s been so long since I’ve really left a hangout or conversation feeling fulfilled or interested. Idk if it’s just growing apart in a subtle way. Some friendships have become quite adult now, there’s a level of detachment and less being shared since they live with their partner now.

This also extends to dating as well, I’m just not interested in people enough to be authentic. In the past I was very motivated and chasing the late night deep life convos.

Have you experienced similar?

Mental health experiences Does anyone here deal with severe chronic stress? How does it affect you, and how do you cope?

TL,DR:

My sister died after an illness when she was 5 ( I was 11). My son died when he was almost 3.

I think it's beginning to take its toll. I'm a collection of weird physical ailments. My mental is has been questionable for 30 years.

General People pleasing and fear of rejection

Hey everyone,

I've been struggling with something lately, and I'd really appreciate some advice from people who have dealt with similar experiences.

I feel like I'm a very sensitive person, and deep down, I think I have a fear of rejection. I tend to value people's opinions, comments, and approval way more than I probably should. Sometimes, I feel like I have to keep everyone happy and make sure nobody is upset with me. I find it difficult to stand up for myself when someone hurts me, and I hate that I often can't respond firmly or defend myself in the moment.

I know I need to develop healthier boundaries and stop letting other people's opinions determine how I feel about myself. I want to be comfortable with who I am without constantly worrying about whether people like me or approve of me.

For context, there are people at work who make comments about my looks and appearance. It bothers me, especially because I don't want to change myself just to meet other people's expectations. Most of the time, I try to laugh it off and keep things light, but sometimes I end up giving them a taste of their own medicine. That usually doesn't end well, and I don't want to keep getting caught up in these back-and-forth exchanges.

I want to learn how to stand up for myself without being rude, remain respectful without being a people-pleaser, and earn respect without feeling the need to prove myself to everyone.

Another thing I've noticed about myself is that I tend to pretend everything is okay even when it isn't. Everyone knows me as the happy person, so I feel like I have to keep playing that role even when I'm hurting inside. I also notice that I sometimes change my personality depending on who I'm around, almost like a chameleon, because I want to be liked and accepted.

I'm honestly tired of living this way. I want to become more comfortable with myself, learn to value myself, and stop changing who I am just to fit in. I want to be authentic, express my feelings without feeling guilty, and stop being so afraid of rejection.

For those of you who have struggled with people-pleasing, fear of rejection, or constantly seeking validation from others:

  • How did you learn to set boundaries without feeling guilty?
  • How do you deal with people who make hurtful comments without retaliating or simply suppressing your feelings?
  • How do you stop caring so much about what other people think of you?
  • How do you learn to be yourself around different people without feeling the need to adjust your personality to fit in?
  • How do you stop pretending to be happy all the time and become more comfortable with being vulnerable?

I'd genuinely appreciate any advice, personal experiences, or practical things that have helped you overcome these struggles. I'm not expecting to change overnight, but I want to start making progress and become a more confident, authentic version of myself.

Thanks for reading! ❤️

Friendships/Community Has anyone reconnected with friends that you drifted apart from years ago and it felt completely natural when you reunited?

I’ve had reunions at a couple of weddings in the past year with a couple friends that i drifted apart from over the years due to adult life getting in the way, there was never any falling out or that, just a lack of effort to keep in contact and different paths so we never saw one another for 10 years. I knew I would see them again at the weddings and looked forward to it but I didn’t expect to feel like no time had past and there was a connection I felt that generally I’ve not had with friends that I’ve made over the past few years and it was reciprocal and we are back in one another’s lives. It’s made me really appreciate those bonds but it’s also made me re-evaluate those friendships I’ve currently got as some I’ve come to realise are performance mask wearing meet ups where having to show up as a particular version and I think now with getting older you start tolerating less as you prefer authenticity.

A lot of people I guess change over the years or would never consider reuniting as they’ve seen that gap as a period of growth and change and don’t necessarily want to reconnect as it feels like they’ve not moved on or are back to where they began years ago but personally I’ve seen it as a reminder of who I am.

Friendships/Community Men in your 20s and 30s, how do you think loyalty, communication, and maintaining friendships have changed among younger generations?

I am a 25-year-old Gen Z guy, and something I’ve noticed over the past several years is how difficult it can be to maintain genuine, dependable friendships, especially during and after college.

I’ve had several friendships fall apart, and it’s made me question how people in our generation approach loyalty, honesty, communication, accountability, and maintaining long-term friendships. And it annoys me because I’ll see people on media posting that they are going out and having fun and/or traveling with each other. And anytime I try to do that with people they either already have plans with other friends, don’t wanna spend the money to travel, etc. It irks me that some people have their friends and do everything with them and then with me when I try to do the same it never works because so many people seem to not know how to be a friend.

Here are some examples of what I’ve experienced:

**Dishonesty and hypocrisy:** One of my former college roommates constantly complained about our other roommates, criticized their behavior, and claimed he couldn’t stand them. We were close throughout college, but after graduation, he became distant, stopped reaching out, and repeatedly made excuses not to hang out. When I eventually asked what was wrong, he blocked me. Ironically, I later discovered he had reconnected with the same roommates he used to criticize and was suddenly calling them great friends. He was also the type where if you make a mistake, he can be mad at you all he wants. But if he made a mistake and you were upset with him, then I was the “bad guy.”

**Selfishness and double standards:** Another college roommate was extremely messy, rarely helped clean, frequently canceled plans, and expected everyone else to accommodate him. He constantly claimed he couldn’t afford things while spending money on video games and car parts. What frustrated me was that his behavior seemed acceptable, while my mistakes were repeatedly held against me.

**Disloyalty and judgment:** Another longtime friend made plenty of mistakes himself, including getting drunk, embarrassing me, and disrupting plans. I overlooked these things because I valued our friendship. However, he seemed much less forgiving of my mistakes. He also complained about our roommates, dropped out of college, and broke our apartment lease, leaving us with a random roommate. Despite previously criticizing everyone, he eventually reconnected with those same people and acted like they were his closest friends.

**Controlling friendships:** I also had a college friend who constantly guilt-tripped me for spending time with other people or prioritizing things like homework, exercising, or having time to myself. He frequently insisted on having serious “talks” that usually involved criticizing my decisions and making me feel guilty. The friendship lasted about a year.

**Growing apart and one-sided communication:** This one probably hurt the most. I had a friend I’d known since 2016 who gradually became distant and seemed more invested in newer friendships. Eventually, he told me that my attempts to maintain our friendship were overwhelming, that I’d crossed boundaries, and that we weren’t as close as we were in high school. He felt I was resisting the fact that we’d grown apart. I recognize that I didn’t handle everything perfectly, but losing a friendship that had lasted a decade was painful.

I’m not claiming to be a perfect friend. I’ve made mistakes, sometimes been too persistent about keeping in touch, and probably handled certain situations poorly. I also understand that people grow apart, develop different priorities, and have the right to establish boundaries. However, what bothers me is how disposable friendships sometimes seem. And how others seem to be having the times of their lives with friends all over social media and when I try to do the same thing it never works out. People can call you their best friend, spend years making memories with you, and then suddenly stop communicating or act like the friendship never mattered.

I’ve also noticed what feels like a lack of accountability. Some people expect endless patience and understanding for their own mistakes but have very little tolerance for anyone else’s.
I don’t expect friends to text every day, constantly hang out, or remain as close as they were in high school or college. I just value honesty, consistency, mutual respect, loyalty, and communication.

For men in their 20s, 30s, and older, I’m interested in hearing your perspectives on a few broader questions: How have your expectations of loyalty and communication in male friendships changed as you’ve gotten older? What differences, if any, do you notice between Gen Z friendships and friendships among older generations? Why do some male friendships seem to fade after high school or college, even when people were once extremely close? What separates a genuinely dependable friendship from one that’s mostly based on convenience or shared circumstances? I’m particularly interested in hearing from older men about whether these problems are unique to younger generations or simply part of growing up and entering adulthood. And is what I see with people always hanging out and traveling with friends a prime example of how “fake” social media is?

Life How do you handle the lonely weekends as a single guy?

ATTENTION: This is for single guys only. I do not want to read any shit about 'my gf, my fiancee, my spouse, wife'!

I'm a mid 30s guy. My last and real relationship ended around a year ago, been dealing with that crap for some time and other stuff. I do not look forward to enter the garbage dating market right now and do not plan to at the moment. Under the week I'm basically fully booked most of the time: Work, gym, my local archery club and chores or appointments here and there keep me busy all the time.

But on the weekend I usually notice that I'm rather lonely. I've still got a few friends but some of them are completely caught up in family life and others I see like 2-3 times a year, sometimes more but even that is a stretch. On Sundays I often visit my parents but it feels like something, someone is missing. :/

Hobbies/Projects Is good enough actually good enough?

As a teenager I dreamed of being the best at something.. A legend. Respected by my peers and admired by most everyone else. I figured if I studied like mad while also working 70-80 hours per week, it'd happen naturally.

Well now I'm 33 and honestly there isn't a single thing I believe I'm great at. I tend to do okay at a steadily growing number of things.. 17 year old me would be disappointed in 33 year old me. Course he thought George W Bush was a great president too, so he got things wrong sometimes too.

Do y'all think about this stuff too or am I more weird than I had thought I was?

Anyways, I gotta get back to it. The duck pen won't build itself and on Tuesday I have to work on automating the new trading system I've tested and finally approved for live action over the last few months. At least the playhouse is mostly done now and it actually has more lumber storage than I expected. The solar racks will have to wait until I've re-done the retaining wall though. Whatever apes were hired by the previous owner to install that wall oughta be ashamed of themselves.

ETA: I'm optimistic that I'll only catastrophically bungle two of those projects. No clue which two it'll be though. 😐

Physical Health & Aging DAE have a depleted sex drive with spurts of extreme horny?

For the most part my sex drive is diminished and not nearly what it was in my 20s.
I can be passionate and in the moment and still have sex 1-2 times a week with small lulls.

But lately there are times where my lust goes from 0-100 In 2 seconds flat. I'm talking intrusive lustful desire amplified to 1000. It's fucking bizarre. I have never had lust hit me like a freight train this way. It's like I'll be chillin and then I see a sexy midriff or something mildly sexy and I go into overdrive in a way I never had. Not even in my teens can I remember such an overtaking feeling of sexual need. It's such an inherent need to pursue and for lack of a better term hunt. Even at my peak age and horniest I never felt that. WHAT GIVES?!
