Left-Lane Camping, Zipper Merging, and the Speed Limit

Left-lane camping is annoying (unless you're in a city, where it usually doesn't count), zipper merging works in theory (but is rarely effectively executed en-masse), and the speed limit isn't ideal for some people (just try not to be everybody else's problem). That should about cover it.

I'm making this post in an attempt to show people that these topics are already heavily discussed here, but please feel free to express your frustrations below or in your own special post.

Thanks for checking out r/driving.

Relax.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Why do drivers accelerate towards a red light?

I really don’t understand why anyone would do this, it just means sitting at a red light longer. I see people all the time doing 50 in a 30 towards a very obviously red light.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Stop running red lights

Was driving to the gas station near my house and was sitting at a red light waiting for the green arrow to show up. It did, and about 1.5 to 2 seconds later a semi going roughly 10-15 mph above the speed limit (50 that goes down to 35 on the other side of the intersection) comes barreling through the red light.

I understand people that cut it close on yellow lights, but his light was red between 2.5 and 3 seconds. Had I just turned left when my light turned green he would have t-boned me on the driver side and I wouldn’t be here to write this PSA.

Stop running red lights, it’s not worth the minute you save waiting for the light to turn green again.

When approaching a green traffic light with crosswalks, does anyone glace at the crosswalk signal as it flashes or counts down to zero to predict if they'll make it through the intersection before the traffic light changes?

This is my personal 'driving hack' to help navigate urban areas. Sometimes there's a delay before the light changes after the 'don't walk' symbol appears but I find it to be pretty reliable overall and helps reduce anxiety when approaching signaled intersections.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Breaking traffic laws is pointless 99% of the time. Change my mind.

• Upvotes

This shouldn't be so complicated or controversial but it apparently is.

Stop speeding.

Stop driving so slow.

Stop camping in the passing lane.

Stop breaking the law!!

I've had numerous discussions with people on here that seem to think they're above the law for one reason or another.

If you're on a public road you need to think about other people around you. If you're intentionally breaking the law you're being selfish. Just because you don't care about your own safety doesn't mean others need to pay the price.

If you don't like the law do something to change it. Simply breaking the law is selfish and when it comes to traffic laws dangerous.

Driving is a privilege. Not a right.

There's one instance where it's okay and it's only in an emergency. Especially life or death.

- Running late to work/school/appointment? Nope

- Need to shit? Okay maybe but that is a grey area IMO. Really depends.

- Angry or emotional? Fuck no. Get off the road.

- You think you're a better driver than everyone else? Are you serious? Get off the road! You deserve to have your license revoked.

- Trying to slow others down because they're driving too fast? Absolutely not. You're making things even worse. Stay out of the way and call the police if you're so concerned.

Being predictable and patient by following traffic laws is so important. If you can't do that then you don't deserve to drive.

Please, change my mind. Why do you deserve to break the law? I really need to know.

P.S. there's this cool new thing called cruise control. Most cars these days come with it. Figure it the fuck out. If most people just set cruise control at or close to the speed limit on highways so many issues would be solved at the same time.

What's the dumbest thing you've been pulled over for?

Post image
• Upvotes

Doing some cleaning of storage on my phone and came across this classic. Dumbass State Trooper was coming over a hill about a 1/4 mile behind me as I was passing a car in a passing zone and he pulled me over claiming it was a no passing zone. It took everything I had to not ask him how stupid can he be that he can pass a sign saying "passing zone pass with care" and still call it a no passing zone

Need Advice Got a ticket for running a red light. Should I fight it?

Location: Howell, Michigan

Hi all,

I ran a red light last night, on purpose, but I don’t think that what I did should be punished.

Last night, at approximately 2:00 a.m., I was traveling southbound on Michigan Avenue in downtown Howell, MI and approached the intersection to make a left turn onto westbound Grand River Avenue. I came to a complete stop at the solid red left-turn arrow.

I waited approximately ten minutes, but the arrow never turned green. I was the only vehicle waiting in the designated left-turn lane, and there were no other cars around. Meanwhile, traffic proceeding through the intersection continued to receive a green light.

After waiting for that extended period without any change in the signal, I became concerned that the left-turn phase was not functioning properly. I stopped, checked for oncoming traffic, yielded, and proceeded cautiously. I believed the signal might not be functioning, rather than simply choosing to disregard the red arrow.

An officer stopped me shortly after I made the turn. He explained that specific signal sometimes fails to detect a waiting vehicle and, as a result, does not change. I also recall him explaining that the signal was known to take several minutes to change, even during the day. He indicated that he and other officers were aware of the issue at this intersection, that they avoided it when possible, and that he recommended I do the same. His explanation reinforced my concern that the left-turn signal may not have been functioning properly while I was waiting.

Should I fight this ticket in court? Do I have any legitimate case?

This ticket carries a $130 fine and 3 points on my license.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Inconsistent speeds.

I'll notice that people really don't pay attention to speed limit signs. I love cruise control and I've gotten a few tickets in the past so I'm paying close attention. I'll be driving at a solid 77 in a 70. I'll pass someone probably going 70. Then in a construction zone the speed limit changes to 55. I'll slow down to and then the person I just passed speeds by. Then when the speed switched back up to normal and I'll pass the same person because they never changed their speed. People are on auto pilot man.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ People need to pick a speed…

Where I’m at, everyone either runs 5 under or what feels like 10 over. There’s never any in between, so it’s annoying to try and set cruise control and make myself a little more comfortable! Sometimes they consistently run that speed and others, it’s like they forgot how to press the gas/go 5 under and then all of a sudden woke up to go 10 over.

It’s not as simple as passing them because then I feel like the dummy. They speed up and I’m all of a sudden in their way and they pass me or something. Just something really annoying that I have no idea how to deal with

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ You should drive just close enough to where you just let go of the gas a bit with out hitting the other pedal . Just match the speed

Witnessed road rage on my commute home

3DI/2DI are three- and two-digit interstate highways. Afternoon rush.

My commute is about four miles of a 3DI that passes under a 2DI and is two-lanes along the interchange, three lanes everywhere else. Traffic was lighter than normal, I was able to drive at highway speed and maintain a following distance.

I could hear them as they approached behind me--two large pickup trucks gunning their engines, one or both of them loud, passed me, then cut into my lane together, possibly racing in traffic. I kept my distance and was never in danger.

Shortly after the merge for the interchange, I could see brake lights, and before long I saw some impact, one of the truck's wheels briefly off the pavement, and facing toward me in the left shoulder, facing another pickup stopped facing my direction. I didn't see the impact that stated the crash, but as I passed, there was a minivan or SUV in a U-turn center guardrail U-turn gap.

Once the wrong-facing truck stopped, that driver jumped out, immediately yelling and running toward the other truck, and what followed I didn't see, I just drove the remaining two three miles to my home. But with a bigger pickup truck facing backwards, it has me thinking that a PIT maneuver might have happened, intentional or not, for him to be faced the wrong way.

I needed to venture out, backtracking, a few minutes after getting home. There was nothing left at the site less than a half hour later and I saw a state trooper facing the same direction I was originally traveling at the gap in the center rail, so either the drivers were able to get away on their own and might have not reported anything. But what happened could have involved far more vehicles if the afternoon rush hour.

There's no point in me reaching out to law enforcement as I wouldn't be able to identify anyone.

What is your experience with insurance trackers?

I've had one of these trackers going on for almost 2 years now, and believe it or not, I'm a happy customer.

It saves me $325 every 6 months. So instead of paying about $1100 every 6 months, I'm paying $700-$750. This is for full coverage, including uninsured motorist. And they actually lowered my bill from $750 to $700 for the next 6 months I'm about to pay for.

The downside: I can only go 8 MPH over the limit, or I get dinged. Before the tracker, I normally didn't go much faster than that anyway (10-15 over max), so I haven't noticed much of a difference in having to leave earlier or get to my destination later. I call it a wash overall. Also, it tracks your acceleration. I have an EV, which is pretty quick off the line, so it will ding me for that pretty often, but so far no issues (unless maybe they would have lowered my new rate more).

I've given up a tiny bit of my time, and it does force you to be safe all of the time (even when you probably could still go faster safely), but the $650/year in my pocket more than makes up for it.

I often hear people say they would never get one of these, but I suspect most of them never had one. I think if you're generally a safe driver, anyway, it's crazy not to get one (unless money isn't a concern for you). If you drive crazy and think it's worth paying more to save you a few minutes each year, then I wouldn't recommend getting one.

Anyway, I'm curious if anyone has had a negative experience with one of these and why.

Terrible day

I am so exhausted and, low-key, a little scared. So, this morning, I left to go to school. By the way, school is about a 45-minute drive each way, especially when traffic is packed. I also had to go somewhere near the school to drop off something at a shop where I normally sell stuff. Someone wanted to buy something from me, so I had to drop it off.
There was a lot of construction, so I was trying to make sure I was looking ahead and preparing to stop if needed. Then, two big dogs ran into the road. Luckily, I didn’t have to swerve, but they came pretty close to being hit. I would have felt terrible if I had hit them, and the situation distracted me a little. After that, someone cut me off, and I had to slam on the brakes. Later, someone else cut me off, and although I didn’t have to brake as hard, it was still scary.
Then, while driving to school after dropping off the item, a cop car came up behind me and scared the crap out of me. Basically, I was going to change lanes, but I realized I would have crossed the solid white line. I know some cops can be petty and might give you a ticket for that, so I decided not to change lanes. I had even turned on my blinker, but I didn’t actually make the lane change.
Right when I did that, the police lights and sirens came on and scared the crap out of me. I thought I was getting pulled over, and I genuinely felt like my life was over. From what I remember, you’re supposed to pull over to the right and find somewhere safe as soon as possible when a cop pulls you over. I was in the left lane, so I started trying to find a neighborhood to pull into because, in my mind, I was getting pulled over. This was a very small, one-way street with only two lanes.
The cop eventually passed me. I felt bad because I thought I should have moved to the right sooner. I’m also worried that I might get a ticket in the mail. It wasn’t a very long time, and I wasn’t sitting there for ages, but I feel like I could have changed lanes during that time.
Then, while driving home, someone cut me off really badly and completely unexpectedly in an intersection. There was a big hill, and I was about to drive over it when a guy suddenly moved all the way to the left in the intersection without using his blinker or giving any warning. He completely cut me off, and I had to slam on the brakes while I was in the intersection.
I finally made it home, and now I’m exhausted. Also, after the whole cop situation, when I realized I wasn’t actually being pulled over, I parked the car a little too far away from the curb. That made me feel even more embarrassed about the whole thing.

Need Advice Extremely Aggressive Driver Threatened to K*ll Me

I’m from Poland. I was driving home with my mum and grandma when I came to a give-way sign. I was turning left, and in my opinion, the car approaching from the right was still far enough away, so I pulled out as I normally would.

The guy on the right was driving fast, or at least that’s how it seemed to me. I genuinely think he was speeding quite significantly. He didn’t seem to make any effort to slow down, and he nearly hit us. Then he overtook us and deliberately slammed on his brakes, seemingly trying to make us crash into him.

After that, he got out of his car and started threatening me. He said I deserved to be killed and told me to get out of the car because he was going to deal with me right there and then. He looked like he might have been under the influence of something. We tried to talk to him calmly and reason with him, but there was no getting through to him. He kept saying he was going to kill everyone, accusing me of laughing in his face (even though I hadn’t even had a chance to say anything). He also mentioned that he had a young child in the back seat. Despite that, he continued behaving aggressively and making threats.

A lot of other nasty things were said, of course. I stayed silent the whole time. At one point, he took our car key and threw it somewhere away from the car. He also kicked our car door before getting back into his own vehicle and driving off.

I didn’t want to argue with him because he clearly wasn’t acting like a rational person. I decided to give him some space to let him vent and hoped that would be the end of it. Honestly, he seemed so unpredictable that I was genuinely concerned about what might happen if I got out of the car. He could have pulled a knife on me, beaten me up, or done something even worse. Pure madness in his eyes.

Now, a few hours later, I feel embarrassed about the whole situation. I feel ashamed, almost as if I were a p*ssy for not standing up for myself or handling it like a man. Part of me feels an overwhelming sense of injustice.

I stayed calm, didn’t take the bait, and didn’t insult him back. I figured that responding aggressively would only make things worse and that risking my health or even my life over some idiot simply wasn’t worth it. But even so, I still feel bad about how everything played out.

Do you think I handled the situation correctly? What do you think? This has never happened to me before, and I’m not really sure how to process it.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Follow through with your decision

Just almost got into a car accident because this idiot was in the left turn lane and decided to turn right; right in-front of me.

Red light car in-front of me going right so Im not really going car turns right I start going right then the car in the left lane decided they were going to go right so they veer right into my lane (I’m going straight.) to turn right. So I stop and hit my car horn. I think they did have their blinkers on but that doesn’t automatically make them able to turn right in-front of me. I swear who ever this person was needs to re take the drivers test.

Need Advice Driving After An Accident

Hello! I had a side swipe, hit and run, accident I want to say about 2 months ago. No airbags were deployed and all the damage to my car was superficial. I've been getting paranoid on the highway and some days it's better and some days it's worse. My problem is that when I sit in the second lane in a four lane highway, I go slow or enough to where both my left and my right can pass. I should say that the accident was on my right side and it was my first year of independently driving. I also hate with a passion being right next to other cars. I feel like I am consistently doing something wrong because everyone passes me. Sorry for all of this, but I would like an outsiders perspective.

Thanks all :)

Alaska Senate candidate apparently rear ended at traffic light

At approximately 6:55 PM on October 24, 2026, officers assigned to patrol responded to the intersection of O’Malley Rd and Lake Otis Pkwy in reference to a multi vehicle collision. The preliminary investigation found that a vehicle was traveling westbound on O'Malley Rd approaching the intersection of O'Malley and Lake Otis Parkway and collided into the rear of a second vehicle which then collided with a third vehicle, who were both stopped at the light.

The occupants of vehicle 2, which included U.S. Senate candidate Mary Peltola, were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver and sole occupant of the first vehicle was also transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The occupant of vehicle 3 refused medical transport.

The circumstances of the collision are under investigation.

New Map App Needed!!

Ugh! Needing a new map/traffic app. Waze has been horrific. Lately, I'll get placed on a path which leads me directly into a left turn across a 2 lane road during traffic, through neighborhoods, and getting absolutely grid locked on the highways. Whats better? I don't really need a burger king ad. just to get stuck in 18+ minutes of traffic. Thanks!

Preventing people to pass is insane and reckless

Can we please spread more awareness to people

Leave the ego out the door

Slower traffic keep right

Never brake check people

When passing, accelerate and move over, don’t cruise to pass

Press your freakin gas pedal on highway ramps

——

As someone with driving PTSD who got hit by a drunk driver 3 years ago, I am hyper aware of surroundings now with driving. These are the things that when not followed, causes so much traffic and road rage incidents.

Someone going 65 blocking someone and brake checking them and preventing them from passing (matching your speed) is far more reckless and dangerous than someone going 80 to pass you.

I call these npcs hallway monitors or wanna be cops. Stop preventing people from wanting to go their own speed.
