Left-Lane Camping, Zipper Merging, and the Speed Limit

Left-lane camping is annoying (unless you're in a city, where it usually doesn't count), zipper merging works in theory (but is rarely effectively executed en-masse), and the speed limit isn't ideal for some people (just try not to be everybody else's problem). That should about cover it.

I'm making this post in an attempt to show people that these topics are already heavily discussed here, but please feel free to express your frustrations below or in your own special post.

Thanks for checking out r/driving.

Relax.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Straddling two lanes when changing lanes

Why do people who are changing lanes or moving into the turn lane they slowly slowly get into that other lane and basically straddle between. Slowing down traffic in the lane they were just in because they won't fully get over.

It's infuriating just move over into the lane.

Is this true? You can’t turn into a turning lane? 2 pics

They deleted it but the rest of the comment said: assuming you’re the red car.

Drivers ED was a several months long mandatory thing in my state and I remember it being fine. Is it state by state? Also I’ve never heard it called a suicide lane whats that about?

edit: so I figured it out, it’s legal on the west coast and a few other random states. That explains the mixed results lol.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Why do some people go so slow on entrance ramps?

Am I going insane? It seems like there has been a rise in people going SLOW AF on interstate entrance ramps in my area. Why are we trying to merge into 70-80 mph traffic going 40 mph? Is it a lack of awareness? Nervous drivers? I've been behind vehicles that have straight up stopped at the end of the entrance ramp because it was unsafe to merge into traffic at the speed they were going. THEN, I had to try and continue from a dead stop because I was behind them. IF THEY WOULD HAVE USED THEIR GAS PEDAL IN THE FIRST PLACE, THIS WOULDN'T BE AN ISSUE. There's no way it's that hard to figure out.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ California…. *sigh*

I’m from Arizona and I’ve made several road trips up to Oregon this year. I always stop in California to rest (Sacramento, Redding, Chico, etc.), and I have to say California drivers are some of the worst I’ve ever seen. I’ve driven in a lot of different states and I’ve never experienced anything quite this bad.
I know this isn’t news to anyone, but good God… how did half of y’all get your licenses??
Nothing against Californians, but what is with cutting into a lane with one centimeter of space and no turn signal?? I can literally feel when someone wants to move over, so I leave them plenty of room. Instead they wait until I’ve already closed the gap, then force their way in. Seriously. WHYYYYY DO YALL DO THAT?? Or the classic: riding my ass when I’m already doing 15 over the limit.
The amount of people who just cut you off like there’s not a single other car on the road is insane. Then they force you to slam on your brakes and risk the person behind you rear ending you. A three car crash happened behind me just yesterday because of this exact behavior.
And don’t even get me started on the damn traffic.
We have our fair share of bad drivers in Arizona, but y’all are on a whole different level.
Rant over. lol
some of yall are taking this too seriously 😭

Venting PSA: Schools buses without their yellow/red lights activated are not special. Treat them like any other vehicle on the road when it comes to right of way.

*School buses.

So I'm a newish school bus driver, started driving this school year. I've noticed that a number of drivers with the right of way stop in the middle of the road to let me turn first. No. We're just like any other vehicle out there if our lights are not flashing. Stopping to let us turn first is unnecessary and annoying to the drivers behind you. Be predictable when driving first, not nice.

Role of left lane in medium traffic

This is mainly a question because to me the answer seems unintuitive.

When there is medium traffic (i.e cars in every lane but its not deadstop) and the lanes are basically just in ascending order of speed but noone is free ahead, does the left lane still act as overtaking lane?

Like yes they are faster, but this dilemma I run into very often around where I live. There will be a car behind me going faster, flashing lights and tailgating or whatever, and there are like 20 cars ahead of me in the same lane going the same speed as me.

Is everyone meant to one by one let this guy through?

Need Advice How to get over the fear of highways and driving ?

I’m 23F, and I got my license at 20, which I know is a little late. I’ve always been a bit iffy about driving because I’ve seen too many devastating car accidents. I’ve always viewed driving as a double edged sword, but as an adult, you eventually have to drive, so I got my license and my own car.
I was doing great at first. I would drive on the highway, and although I was usually a little scared, it was nothing too serious.
Three years ago, I was involved in a hit and run on the highway. Thankfully, nothing too serious happened, but the experience was absolutely terrifying and traumatic for me. I started avoiding the highway because I was so scared. I know people always say, “No one wants to hit you,” but there are genuinely people out there who don’t give a damn about their own lives and drive recklessly!
I started avoiding driving as much as possible. I would have my boyfriend drive me around, and the only place I regularly drove myself was work, which was very close to home.
Less than a month after my accident, some teenagers were driving recklessly and crashed into my neighbor’s house. Their bodies were scattered across the front porch, and, unfortunately, the driver and several passengers didn’t survive. Witnessing the aftermath of that accident set me back even further.
Now, every time I drive, I find myself crying, hyperventilating, and trembling. I’ve started avoiding going out to places and have even skipped doctor’s appointments because they were too far away. I’d rather use Uber, order everything through DoorDash, or have my boyfriend drive me.
It’s honestly embarrassing because everyone else seems to drive so effortlessly, and they make it look so easy. For me, though, it’s genuinely terrifying. Even the thought of merging onto the highway or switching lanes makes me cry. Sometimes, I feel like I shouldn’t even have a license.
Unfortunately, I wanted to go to therapy, but I lost my health insurance and can’t afford it right now.
Does anyone have any advice or tips for overcoming this fear? I’d really appreciate it.

Need Advice Is it possible I hit a parked car and didn’t know?

When I get to work in the mornings I have to park in an enclosed parking garage. If I get there at least 10 minutes early usually there’s alot of parking spots but I got there later yesterday and spots were limited. I saw there was one parking spot open but the car parked beside it was really close so it was a tight fit. I initially pulled into the space and decided to park elsewhere in order to avoid any issues so I pulled out. When I parked somewhere else I noticed on the rear drivers side near the door and gas cap, there were a few superficial scratches but only on the exterior and not in the paint. So I walked back over there and didn’t see any damage on the other car and didn’t see any paint marks on my car or the other car. I was so ocd about it I went out there multiple times and took pictures because I wanted to do the right thing but I didn’t see any damage on the other car so I didn’t leave a note. Security didn’t report that anyone said they were hit. Am I overreacting?

Need Advice My car got t-boned and the other part was at fault

So, I have never been in an accident before. I’m so shaken up. So, I was turning right and my right turn light was green. This huge SUV passed through his red light and crashed into my car. My car was damaged but I have come out relatively unscathed. Just some back pain from the impact. I think it’s a miracle. The damage could’ve been a lot worse. I’m going to the doctors tomorrow for my back. I was able to drive after that but I will definitely need to go to panel beater tomorrow because the car wasn’t driving as smoothly. The other party admitted fault. I will be making a third party damage claim against their insurance because I don’t have comprehensive insurance. I just have the one for personal injuries which I’m going to use. It might be my stupidity but I didn’t know that comprehensive insurance was separate. I’m originally from another country with different insurance system.

I’m just looking for some advice and reassurance. I’m genuinely quite quite shaken up because I’m a safe driver and have only been driving for 2 years.

Need Advice Where do you prefer cars behind you to stop?

I see so many cars in my area being nose to nose when stopped and it makes me uncomfortable. I like to stop with small gap in between.
Do you care if a car is super close behind you or do you prefer people leaving space behind you?

Are laws against blocking intersections actually enforcable?

• Upvotes

Many states prohibit entering an intersection unless there's sufficient space on the other side.

But consider traffic flowing at 20 mph. The car ahead just clears the intersection, and you follow. It suddenly stops, leaving you stuck in the intersection.

Technically you are in violation - there wasn't enough empty space when you entered, but you reasonably expected traffic to keep moving.

So how can an officer distinguish between a driver who knowingly entered a blocked intersection and one whose reasonable expectation of moving traffic turned out to be wrong?

Doesn't enforcement inevitably become subjective? A law that cannot be objectively enforced cannot be enforced at all.

Need Advice Moving violation for inspection from a different state?

I just got a moving violation in NY for an inspection sticker that’s expired from MA. Car is registered and everything in Massachusetts - I was just driving through New York state.
Has this happened to anyone else?
Do I just plead guilty?
How is this legal? Some states don’t even require inspections so I don’t understand how I could get a ticket.

Need Advice Waving someone through traffic?

What are ur thoughts on someone or yourself trying to get waved through 2 or more lanes of traffic coming out of a side street or parking lot or sum?

Would you let them through or do you do this yourself?

tbh I wouldn’t wanna be liable if someone in another lane hits them or sum so I wouldn’t

and I’ve never tried this myself because I’ve been in an accident with a friend driving because of ppl waving someone through (we were at a light and she assumed everyone was just stopped for it)

But I see this happen a lot and wanted see others opinions

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ TURN SIGNALS, PLEASE!

I was driving in a school zone and met up with a large semi truck across from me. I was turning right and he stopped before me. He didn’t have any turn signals on and so I figured since we would cross paths at all, I’d go. He gestures at me like I’m crazy, because apparently he was turning the same way too? He didn’t have his signal on, so i figured he was going straight, at first he did (because of his vehicle, it had to go forward then turn so the back wouldn’t hit anything else) then turned in the same way?! No collision or a scratch, but seriously, a signal for a car like that would be pretty helpful.

The Conflict of Speeding

I feel like the majority of us on the road understand the concept of Time = Distance / Speed while also knowing that going over 60mph only saves an additional minute per 10mph in our daily commute; however, I feel like we all feel that feeling of passing cars is saving us more time and we feel like were getting there so much faster even though we aren't actually saving more than a few seconds in our drive. By the numbers, 65 mph is ideal between the time it takes vs other speeds, the optimum miles-per-gallon ratio, stopping and reaction times, and the wear & tear caused on the car.

Does anyone else feel conflicted between the logic of knowing you should probably only go 65 mph and the satisfying feeling of going faster (particularly when other drivers aren't even going the speed limit)?

r/driving • • 21h ago

What would you do in this situation?

Let's say you are Car A.

You are on a dense highway with a speed limit of 65 mph. Every other lane is clocked exactly at 65 mph.

You are in Lane 1 going 73 mph, slowly, but actively passing all the cars cruising at 65 mph. However, you have a car in front of you going the exact same speed. You aren't right behind, but there are cars infront of you.

Soon, a lifted F-150 crawls right up your exhaust pipe, tailgates you aggressively, and starts flashing its high beams.

Even if you move out of the way, the truck will just be stuck behind the car that's in front of you anyway.

what do you do here?

  1. Ignore them: Keep your pace, maintain a safe distance from the car ahead, and let them flash away.
  2. Move over: Brake to match the 65 mph traffic, squeeze into a tight gap in Lane 2, and let the truck move up exactly one car length.
  3. Something else?

What would YOU do in this situation, and what is the actual logical thing to do?

Need Advice New commute, how to pass the time?

I just got a new job and rather than biking to work I now have to drive 40 minutes each way, traffic depending.

How do people actually pass the time during their commute? Just radio? Music, audio books? I want to be productive with the 40 minutes but right now just feels like wasted time.

Learner, how to improve foot precision control?

I have driven for about 13 hours total now. And still, there is one thing that does not seem to ever improve:my foot precision control.

I brake too hard and I gas too hard. I literally cannot do less because then nothing happens.

My foot is on the gas or brake pedal. Nothing happens. I move it veryveryvery slowly as carefully as possible and then suddenly, the engine revs to 3 or 4 000 RPM, or the brake pedal overreacts and the car stops rapidly.

Seems I cannot be precise. I blame the lesson car for being so sensitive too but maybe I also lack footcontrol.

Are all cars like this? one super slight touch and the car accelerates or decelerates very rapidly?

Are there any exercises I can do at home to improve the precision of my foot? I think its something to do with whichever muscle lifts the foot up, because gravity alone pushes the pedals too deep in already.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Slow drivers at 3:30-4am

Does anyone else regularly drive during the very early morning hours? Most people I come across drive like road blocks, speed limit 45 yet so many are driving 35. It’s a really simple straight road my entire 30 minute drive. I pass every single one. Slow drivers honestly make the roads more unsafe than drivers who go 10, 20, or more over.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Breaking traffic laws is pointless 99% of the time. Change my mind.

Edit 4:

FYI if you're offended or upset about this post you're part of the problem.

Original post:

This shouldn't be so complicated or controversial but it apparently is.

Stop speeding.

Stop driving so slow.

Stop camping in the passing lane.

Stop breaking the law!!

I've had numerous discussions with people on here that seem to think they're above the law for one reason or another.

If you're on a public road you need to think about other people around you. If you're intentionally breaking the law you're being selfish. Just because you don't care about your own safety doesn't mean others need to pay the price.

If you don't like the law do something to change it. Simply breaking the law is selfish and when it comes to traffic laws dangerous.

Driving is a privilege. Not a right.

There's one instance where it's okay and it's only in an emergency. Especially life or death.

- Running late to work/school/appointment? Nope

- Need to shit? Okay maybe but that is a grey area IMO. Really depends.

- Angry or emotional? Fuck no. Get off the road.

- You think you're a better driver than everyone else? Are you serious? Get off the road! You deserve to have your license revoked.

- Trying to slow others down because they're driving too fast? Absolutely not. You're making things even worse. Stay out of the way and call the police if you're so concerned.

Being predictable and patient by following traffic laws is so important. If you can't do that then you don't deserve to drive.

Please, change my mind. Why do you deserve to break the law? I really need to know.

P.S. there's this cool new thing called cruise control. Most cars these days come with it. Figure it the fuck out. If most people just set cruise control at or close to the speed limit on highways so many issues would be solved at the same time.

Edit: so far only one person mentioned a reason I didn't originally list. Getting away from unsafe drivers or conditions is perfectly reasonable to temporarily break the law.

One thing I have to make very clear because apparently this wasn't obvious. Following traffic laws to the T does not equal being safe. Most of the time it does but as I've mentioned in the example above it's sometimes not just safer but necessary. Apologies for assuming that was implied.

One thing I've heard many times but no one has explained is some people seem to think using cruise control causes back ups. Can anyone explain this? I'm legitimately confused and not a single person who mentioned it has yet to explain.

Something else I've noticed is a lot of people are just making excuses or pointing blame elsewhere. The whole point I'm trying to make is people need to take more responsibility for their own actions.

Here's a list of my favorite unhinged reasons people think it's okay for them to break the law I've heard so far:

"The speed limit is too low!"

"I'm bored."

"Speeding helps me focus."

"Everyone else is just driving too slow."

"But passing lane campers and slow drivers are the problem! Not me constantly driving 15 over."

In the same vein as above but maybe even more unhinged: "The difference in speed between drivers is the issue. Not me speeding. If everyone just went 20 over the speed limit we would all be safer for it!"

"Everyone else around me is doing it."

"I'm a better driver so it's fine."

"Other people drive too fast so I sit in the passing lane to slow them down." (I'm not making this up. People really think like this.)

"Police need to stop me otherwise I'll just go 15 over all the time."

"I've never gotten a ticket or gotten in an accident so it's fine."

"If I know no one else is around me it's fine." (Frankly this is insane because things can change very quickly in just a moment. If you're not on a track in a controlled environment it can still affect others around you.)

Edit 2:

More unhinged shit

"cars are safer nowadays so my speeding is fine."

"My running red lights is fine because everyone else around me is a horrible driver."

Edit 3:

Last unhinged comment I'll list:

"If they did need to take more responsibility for their actions, then they already would have, and you wouldn't have made this post. Your post disproves itself"

I'm done responding to comments. I appreciate everyone who made honest conversation. It's refreshing to know there are other people out there who actually care about others around them.

While I'm not shocked it's just sad how many of you think you're just better than everyone else and/or think the law just doesn't apply to you. Especially everyone who thinks they're just better than the average driver and you have no room for improvement. Look in the mirror for once. Everyone makes mistakes and everyone has room for improvement.

Near Miss Car Accident - I feel so guilty

Hey guys, on my way to the bus stop to which I normally drive to I had a near accident when I got on the roundabout to make the first exit. The driver on the roundabout (it was a small roundabout so you can't really accelerate on it) and their indicator on to signal but I though that they were going to make the exit that was before and so I misjudged and went on the roundabout and had the driver of the vehicle not slowed themselves down we would have crashed. (if you are the driver I am so sorry for the whole situation). Turns out the driver was exiting the roundabout onto the same exit that I was (which is a local park that most locals just park their car to take the bus) I freaked out and parked my car away from the car behind me and took a solid 5 to 10 minutes in my car freaking out and trying to calm myself down. I didn't see the owner of the car get out the vehicle and once I had some what composed myself I went to the bus stop and I noticed a car getting out of the car park and just kept walking. I honestly beat myself up because I should have approached the car and apologised to the driver but I was a complete mess and I couldn't think straight at all. Once I got on the bus as the bus drove past the car park I noticed that the car I had a near miss with wasn't in the car park anymore and started freaking out. Its been like almost three hours since this incident I still feel so guilty and I can't even concentrate. This is the first time that I have ever had just a near miss accident in my life and I'm about to get my opens soon too (i've been driving on my P's for 2.5 years now) and I keep beating myself up about this I don't know how to proceed. I feel so guilty for scaring the driver because of my misjudgement. I take full responsibility for my actions I just feel so guilty for potentially scaring the other driver and putting us both in such a frightening situation. I feel like I shouldn't never drive at all anymore too and I don't know how to continue on about this.

Need Advice Considering buying first car in the winter (east-coast USA). Advice?

So I just got my license this past spring (2026) since then I haven’t really driven at all since I don’t have any family or friends in the state I moved to last year who could help me with that. I’m thinking of taking a few more driving lessons next month and then getting a car to start driving on my own.
Here’s the thing. I wouldn’t be able to get a car until December earliest. I’m worried if learning to drive on my own in the winter is unrealistic and I should just wait until the spring. Any advice?

I really don’t understand why anyone would do this, it just means sitting at a red light longer. I see people all the time doing 50 in a 30 towards a very obviously red light.

Need Advice Item to see corner of car

Recently got my permit and I'm currently learning to drive. I have ~8-10 hrs under my belt at this point, and I'm pretty happy with my progress. One thing I've been struggling with, however, is getting a feel for where the rightmost side of my car is and where the front ends. I think this is partly because my car's hood is angled pretty steep, so you can only see the nearest few inches of it while at the wheel. A front view camera helps for parking and such, but I feel like I rely on it too much.

I'm trying to find a simple decor or some object that I can pop onto the farthest, rightmost corner of my car hood. Anyone have some ideas or suggestions, or maybe even a product you've used for this exact purpose?
Preferably something that can withstand moving up to 50mph without flying off, but is also removable without destroying a corner of my car's paint job.

Any advice or ideas would be amazing. Thank you!
