Houseplant What’s going on with my plants? Am I over or under watering?

Since moving apartments a few months ago a couple of plants of mine seem to be struggling. They are both losing leaves at the base, and the purple one almost seems sad at the base?
I don’t believe they have root rot, but technically have not overly checked. Though when I repotted a couple, I did not notice anything suspicious.
I have been using tap water, but plan to switch to distilled for the next watering.
They get lots of indirect and some direct light during the day, at least 6 hours.
They are hard at the base, not mushy or weak.
I have been trying to pluck dead leaves but it gets ahead of me sometimes.
My pothos and other plants are doing great.
I did the recommended rounds of mosquito bits recently, but that was months ago.
They are growing well at the ends and seem to be healthy.
I’ve had the plants almost two years now, and water about once a week to a week and a half but have been checking the soil to make sure it is mostly dry before watering.
The ones without drainage have rocks at the bottom to help with drainage but new pots are on their way.
What could the problems be? I’m terrified of root rot and don’t want to lose my plants that I’ve had for so long. I’m new at this and have a tight budget. It has been happening for about 2ish months now.

Other Virus or growlight burns?

Post image
• Upvotes

I have a shallow bowl of succulent prop leaves (mix of different types and mystery leaves). I water them carefully with a squirt bottle at the bases of the mother leaves or spray them down if I’m in a hurry. I do this about once a week. Today I noticed that some of the leaves had this weird pattern and I’m not sure if it’s a virus or if it’s growlight burns from when I sprayed them and there were water droplets left on the leaves. Should I get rid of the remaining props in that same bowl? None of the other props have the same markings. There’s even a few of this same type that look completely healthy.

They’re indoors under barrina T8’s for 10 hours a day. They are not at an angle that gives them window light. Soil is succulent soil with a tiny bit of perlite.

Houseplant Help what do I do for my monstera

Started yellowing not to long ago and then I went a way for a week and returned and it was like this anyone have any advice? Do I trim of the browning leaf? Also another leaf has a tiny bit of brown should I trim off the whole leaf or leave it? The plant is right next to a window so I think it gets enough light there is a fan next to it though and it does get a bit chilly at night. I water it when the top inch of soil is dry but I recently bought it and it had a bit of yellow when I first got it too.

Monstera Is it time to cut the leaf off?

My mom propagated my first Monstera. As you can tell the original propagated stem leaf looks wilted. Should I cut just the leaf or leave it? She now sits by a window that provides indirect light. She did have burnt crispy leaf tips that I trimmed. I only water when her dirt is dry.

I’m a new plant mom and only acquired a few plants. Nothing compared to the beautiful spaces people here have posted.

Cactus/Succulent Should I cut off the severely affected leaves?

A month ago I sprayed all my plants 3 times with spinosad because I found a trips on one of my plants.

Today I found another. I sprayed these Kalanchoe Blossfeldiana propagations with 70% isopropyl alcohol and the rest of my plants with a home made spray ( "sexy plant juice" - 2 cups of water, 2 tbsp Neem oil, 1 tbsp peppermint Castile soap and a dash of isopropyl alcohol).

I waited for the alcohol do dry on the Kalanchoe and then I sprayed it again with the home made mix.

I will spray the Kalanchoe every 3 days with alcohol.

❓My question is : should I remove the severely affected leaves? I has 3-4 leaves like the one in the picture, the rest look ok.

❓Should I throw the whole thing away instead?

-------------------------

-the plant is on a balcony that is facing north. Good indirect light. I also bought a Sansi light 40w, it's on the way.

-terracota pot with drainage

-aroid soil mix not very chunky due to the size of the propagations

I can’t figure out how to get this plant to grow, it had thrips twice, lost all its leaves twice, had root rot, and won’t regrow any leaves. Can I save this plant?
Plant is in a west facing window, located in Rhode Island. Planted in a pumice bonsai soil mix after regular potting soil resulted in root rot. Plastic pot with drainage holes. Watering- I try to generously mist it every 2 days, light watering once a week

Pest Related Unidentifiable plant decline

I recently moved most of my plants to a new state in July. I had to water prop many of them (besides the alocasias and large pothos), so I initially excused their decline as adjusting to soil. Then, to my horror I found what I believed to be spider mites on my alocasia Polly in early September😢. Due to the proximity to my other plants, I isolated the Polly, rinsed, and treated all of my leafy plants with neem max. I skipped the succulents/fern/african violets to avoid leaf damage. After one round of the neem max I haven’t seen spider mites on my plants. However, the leaves on many of my plants have gotten notable worsening damage in the past few weeks. I do not see really any visible bugs. Is this thrips??? If so, what is the best treatment option? I don’t think I can do beneficials since when I potted all my water props I did it in soil with systemic granules 😩 pls send help!!

Houseplant Help! My fiddle leaf fig is dying

I’ve had this plant for a couple years, although I’ve moved houses with her. See before and after to see her steady decline over the last year, she’s been browning and losing leaves. She also has some yellow mushrooms that have popped up in the dirt, although that also happened when she was happy and healthy. My house doesn’t get enough direct sun, so I’ve tried to put her in the sunniest room and water her often. Is there any way to save her, or propagate babies? I’m scared to repot or do anything dire that may hurt her more. What can I do to save my poor baby, what am I doing wrong?

Leaves for sure need a dusting but Ive had this plant about 2 months and it's never been doing too hot. Just wanted to know if it's far too late and if I'm just torturing the dang thing? Any chance I can propagate anything from it and start new? Would love any advice.

I know it's not enough light or humid all the time enough in my place, I water about once every two weeks or so and keep it in the bathroom where it can have a lil more humidity. It's only getting a few hours of indirect light each day though. Thank you for any help!!

I have other plants that haven't been as finicky but I named this one after Judy Garland and fear I may have cursed her with the namesake.

Houseplant Peace lily problems

I’ve had this peace lily since February 2026. She sits right there near a NE facing window, with some assisted plant light above her. I water her once her soil is dry and she is kinda droopy. So there’s about a week and a half between waterings. Not sure why she could be yellowing at this rate

Houseplant Everything started doing bad all at once, help?

All of these plants I bought last spring and immediately repot. All had an initial shock phase before recovering. Ever since, everything had been doing fine, besides the pothos which I think was underfertilized so started yellowing and spotting. I fed everything a few weeks ago to get them ready for winter. Everything is watered about every 10 days, when the top 1-2 inches of soil is dry. They are all in an east facing window in Oregon, so they get a few hours of bright indirect sunlight in the morning. All pots have drainage, and each watering I pour water until it goes out of the drainage holes, let them drain, and put them back. The palm started doing this a week ago. I kinda feel like I can’t take care of them anymore, idk why I’m not having success rn

Houseplant SOS

I’m not entirely sure what this plant is, the tag when I bought it 10 years ago said lemon lime something. But my phone and a friend of mine both say it’s a corn plant ( I have a GIANT corn plant and it doesn’t look like this). Either way, I have wonderful healthy growth on the bottom and I’d love to chop the tall leggy part and place it in water if that’s possible? This plant right now is over 3 and 1/2 ft tall. I have 3 LED plant bulbs in this small lamp in the corner because this corner is about 12 feet from a window on the opposite wall. I turn on my plant lamps when I get up at noon and leave it one all night until I go to bed around 3am (we’re a second shift house). I water her only when my moisture reader tells me she’s below 4 on the scale. I do a full watering until the water runs through the bottom. And honestly it’s only below a 4 on the meter maybe once every month and a half so it doesn’t dry out much either. Not sure what I can do about that. Can anyone who knows WAY more than me, identify this poor gal and point me in the right direction so I can try to get her thriving!!? I’d love to save the top if that’s possible, and if I can chop it, how far down do it chop it?? I want the growth on the bottom to thrive.
Any information or advice is great appreciated, thanks!😊

Hi all. I have never had plants but I agreed to care for this one for 5 months for someone in his apartment. He doesn’t know what type of plant it is but said he waters a couple times a week. When we got here 2 months ago it was leaning heavily. It would lose leaves regularly, but the leaning has gotten worse. I moved it slightly to get more sun and now entire branches have fallen (see photo). What do I do?

Houseplant help my beautiful calathea

Thumbnail

my jungle velvet calathea recently started yellowing and turning brown on certain l leaves, and it has only been spreading. the leaves that were growing relatively quickly also have slowed down a lot, they’ve been rolled up for a week or 2.
i thought it might be root rot because it started the day after i watered, but the roots look okay from the outside (and i don’t want to break up the root ball).
i give her filtered water (from the fridge) and bottom water. it might be shock because the water was cold, but she’s still deteriorating so i’m not sure. pretty sure there’s spider mites but i haven’t really seen that many. i also haven’t seen any thrips, even when i wipe it with a paper towel. i got neem oil and tested it on a lower leaf, so hopefully that will turn out okay and i can drench it. i also just got a humidifier yesterday.
she sits a few feet from an east facing window and she is still in her original potting soil from a big box store (i’ve been nervous to repot, i know calatheas can be temperamental). i’ve had her since july and she has been very happy until this…. this started about a week and a half ago.

Houseplant Fluffy mold?rot?

Post image

Has this first appear a week ago and I sort of quarantined the plant and then binned it.
It’s now spread and honestly I have no clue
It goes poof when touched so it’s obviously spreading from that but what is it and how do I stop it infecting the rest of my collection

Plant collection gets 16 hours of semi direct LED light, most plants are Leca substrate or sphagnum, only watered when visibly dry
Thank you

Houseplant Found this dracaena (reflexa?) in the trash

It looks very rough I know. Does it have any chance of survival? I have no idea what it's previous light or watering conditions were like, it was literally in a trashcan.

I will be quarantining it for obvious reasons, but I don't see any sign of pests or pest damage.

It was completely dried out so I gave it a good soaking when I got home. The pot has drainage, but it looks like it is in desperate need of new soil. My instinct is to wait on a repot for the time being as it is already going to be in shock from all the changes, but if I'm wrong please let me know.

I'm going to find the brightest spot on my house to put it, and possibly get a grow light if it needs it, but I would love suggestions for how to care for it to give it the best chance of survival. Thank you in advance!

Pest Related How do I know if my plants don’t have thrips anymore ??

Thumbnail

So I noticed thrips on two of my plants on October 2nd. Some larvae on one plant and adult thrip on a different plant. Four plants were sitting together so I quarantined and treated them all. Removed the top layer of soil and replaced it. I used systematic granules in all the plants and have been spraying them with insecticidal soap and neem oil regularly.

I’ve been checking on them daily and haven’t noticed any larvae or adult thrips since. The first 3 pics are the infected leaf which looked pretty bad. The fourth picture is the newest leaf that came out. There’s been no sign of thrips since that I’ve seen. I’m not sure when I can put them back together or if I should keep them separated to be save. Any ideas??

(Last pic is of the 4 plants quarantine locations)

Houseplant Help with browning edges on alocasia

Post image
3 Upvotes

I've only had the plant a week, and I've only watered it once since then since the soil was damp when I got it. I did let it get pretty dry before I watered it though, and after doing some of my own research I've found that Alocasia don't really like that. When I did water it for the first time I did so until it started to come out of the drainage holes.

It's currently sitting in front of a window that gets very little direct sunlight, so I have a grow light set up in front of it as well.

The little hole near the tip of the leaf was there, but the edges definitely did not look like this when I first got it. Could the browning edges be because I let it get too dry before watering? Or did I give it too much water? Or is it something else entirely?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Houseplant Please help me save plant :(

I’m not sure but this may be a Shield Aralia?

I’ve had this plant for almost two years now. I’ve been doing the same routine (water when top inches of soil feels dry), I usually only do bottom up watering but will occasionally flush everything out with a full watering here and there. This plant gets sufficient indoor light from a north window (I only have north facing windows) and it’s been doing okay in its same spot.

I may have left it in water for too long during the last watering but I’m not sure what happened. I see a bit of mold growing on the roots so I sprinkled cinnamon on it.
I tried to soak up excess water by putting some paper towels around the soil. There are drainage holes in the pot.

How can I save this plant? :(( it’s been growing so well but all the leaves are now starting to droop and turn yellow.

Houseplant Help me prune this plant

Thumbnail

So I just received this houseplant from my sister-in-law yesterday (not known how old the plant is), i’m not sure it’s exact variety but it looks like a snake plant or some Dracaena (according to Grok). I’m concerned because the leaves are growing so long, some of the longest leaves are almost 3 to 4 feet. I need to contain this growth because it doesn’t fit in an apartment because it takes up way too much floor space. So my goal is to cut it somewhere at the base or something and nurse it back so it doesn’t grow with such long leaves. However, I don’t know really where to cut it or how to prune it back. And if it’s just a certain type of variety that is certain to grow with these long leaves.

Any help would be great!

The plant can get a lot of light 5 to 7 hours of direct on a day.
I just got it so I don’t have a watering habit but can water it weekly. It’s in a pretty small pond maybe 8-10 inches in diameter and a foot high with drainage. I did notice the roads were growing out of the drainage holes.

Houseplant help me salvage this

Post image

Was gifted this plant about 3 weeks ago, it’s been like this for about half that time and seems chronically dry. It’s a couple feet back from a NW window with the blinds partially opened (was told it needs bright, filtered light). I was watering it until it was dripped through once a week, but that’s when it shriveled up, so I have now been watering it whenever the top is no longer damp. I am horrible with plants so am not sure how to save it!

Houseplant Leggy money tree

Post image

I have had this plant for close to 5 years. It was so small when I got it. It sees some indirect sunlight and I water it twice a week in the summer and once in the winter.

At first I wasn't able to braid it but it was thriving anyway. Last year I left it with a friend who repotted it but I felt the soil was too dense so I redid it to get a better drainage. Then last March I went on a trip for 2 weeks and it hasn't been the same ever since even with fertilization.

At this point I feel it's dying and I don't know what to do to save it!

Help!
