Beliau berkata demikian pada sesi perbincangan utama bertajuk 'The Pathway to Abolition of the Death Penalty in Malaysia' sempena Persidangan 'Ending the Death Penalty in Asia: Reform Pathways, Comparative Perspectives, and Path Forward', di sini, hari ini.

the Ramayana is an epic story centered around Indian deities and mythological figures.
The story follows Lord Rama (an incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu), his wife Goddess Sita, his loyal brother Lakshmana, the monkey warrior Lord Hanuman, and the demon king Ravana.
It is based on the ancient Sanskrit epic by the sage Valmiki, telling the story of Rama's 14-year forest exile, the abduction of Sita by Ravana, and the massive war to rescue her.

Politics Mahathir's "The Malay Dilemma", 6 Decades Later

Post image

Among the most iconic and polarising political works in Malaysia is Tun Dr Mahathir's The Malay Dilemma, published in 1970.

In the book, Mahathir broke down and analysed the economic struggle of the Malays. Among his claims were that if no interventions were made, the Malaysian economy would prosper, but would be left to total Chinese domination. Hence the thesis of his "dilemma" was whether Malays should just accept being the underclass of a highly prosperous country, or if they should forcefully intervene to take a share of the wealth, even if it somewhat set back Malaysia's economic development.

Among some of the reasons backing his claims were that Malays were genetically and culturally inferior to the non-Malays when it comes to economic drive, that the British marginalised the Malays, that Malaysia fundamentally belonged to the Malays, and that the Malays could not compete in business. At the time, the average income of the Malaysian Chinese was 3x that of their Malay peer.

Fast forward to today, over 50 years and decades after the New Economic Policy that was intended to address this dilemma. In 2024, the average Malaysian Chinese household earned a monthly income of RM11,494, as compared to RM9,841 and RM8,220 for Indians and Malays respectively, according to the government. The mean Chinese household still earns 40% more than the mean Bumiputera household. Absolute poverty remains disproportionately high among the Bumiputera.

So after more than half a century of the NEP, billions spent, and endless political rhetoric, do you believe that the Malay dilemma has been solved? The London School of Economics suggests that the NEP disproportionately benefitted the richest Malays most. Perhaps these "richest Malays" now form the business elite of Malaysia, capable of competing with the largest Chinese businesses in the country. Malays now dominantly control many industries, comprise the government and civil service, and lead both government-linked companies and their own private sector startups. In fact, it is highly debatable whether the Chinese still hold absolute economic dominance in Malaysia today.

And thus this brings us back to the most controversial core of Mahathir’s thesis: the idea that Malays are fundamentally uncompetitive.

If you are Malay, do you actually believe Mahathir's premise was and still is true? That the Malays are inherently incapable of thriving without government help? What about non-Malays, what do you think? This political narrative, that of The Malay Dilemma, has formed the basis and rhetoric of almost all political discussion and policy since our nation's founding. Have the Malays proven themselves capable of taking of their safety harness in the 60 years of the NEP? Or is the reality that it was never a problem of race, that Malaysians of all races are just equally struggling under a massive class divide engineered by the elite?

Ultimately, are we still trapped in Mahathir's 1970s dilemma, or is it finally time to throw his thesis in the trash?
