‘We are embarrassed’: Acting MCPD Chief Francke reflects on inspector general’s findings
I'm not allowed to ask questions of county leadership because I'm not a real journalist, but I would love to know when MCPD is going to start enforcing traffic laws in the county. The number of people senselessly killed and maimed on county roads should be what's truly embarrassing.

Magruder HS.....*sigh*
Yet again, something wrong with the school building. This place is 55 years old and should have been replaced or significantly remodeled years ago, but no.
My son just texted me (school just let out) this photo with a note that they found asbestos in the A hallway (that's what the neon yellow sign is up near the ceiling). Now, I realize that schools of this age are going to have asbestos in them. It's just a fact. But this is something that's been known for 2 weeks and I guess just now students are realizing this? He said teachers seemed to not be aware themselves based on their reactions when he pointed it out.
I'm just frustrated for him because if it's not one thing, it's another. He was in the auditorium when some of the ceiling came down during the spring musical. He was there when the HVAC completely failed and they had no AC for weeks. In the summer, he was in the building and was in faculty bathroom and the ceiling was coming down. Let's not even mention the fights and other threats that have occurred.
We actually do like this school for its staff, but it just seems like the ignored stepchild of MCPS.

Government County Elections
Just wanted to put this discussion out there since early voting has commenced and the polls open next week. Who is everyone voting for, for county executive and other important positions, and why? I have been very busy this election cycle so I have not had as much time to educate myself ahead of time. I’d love to discuss with fellow MoCo peeps!

Dashcam Footage – Pedestrian Accident on Woodfield Road – October 25, 2026
Hello,
I witnessed a vehicle strike a pedestrian on Woodfield Road (MD 124) in Gaithersburg on October 25, 2026, at approximately 8:30 PM.
My dashcam recorded the incident. There was on more car infront of me and behind the car in question. I observed the driver stop and check on the victim before I left the scene. I don't know if anyone or police want the dashcam video.
UPDATE: Video has been shared with the police.

Glen Echo's Conduit Road Roadhouses: DC's Vice Strip Over the Line
In the early 1900's, illegal bars and gambling operations filled a stretch of Conduit Road (now called MacArthur Blvd.) near Glen Echo, just on the Maryland side of the the DC/MD border, taking advantage of a strip of land where Montgomery County and the Federal Government couldn't agree on law enforcement jurisdiction.

First-time homeowner facing a potentially expensive bathroom renovation. Where do we even start? (1950s bathroom, DMV area) ko
TL;DR: Need advice on renovating a ~60 sq. ft. master bathroom with possible moisture damage. First-time homeowner trying to figure out the scope, who to hire, and how much financial pain to expect.
I’ve been doing my best to spruce up our master bath with some minor DIY projects—fixing a slow-dripping shower spout, replacing caulk, regrouting the shower, etc.
I was getting ready to paint when I thought, “Hey, let me investigate those loose floor tiles a little more closely.”
They’ve been wonky for years, but we’ve prioritized other projects, so we threw a bath mat over them and moved on.
Well, the loose tiles came right up with very little effort, revealing ANOTHER layer of tile underneath, which also lifted right up. The mortar and wire mesh beneath the original tiles appear to be crumbling.
Based on my limited research, I’m guessing this is some combination of age and moisture damage (1950s townhouse), and we may be looking at stripping everything down to the subfloor. $$$
Some additional context:
-We replaced a leaking toilet wax ring about a year ago. It caused some water damage to the kitchen ceiling below, which we addressed ourselves. We haven’t noticed additional water damage since.
-The floor tiles were loose long before the wax ring issue.
-We’re hoping to move into a bigger home within the next 2–3 years, so we’re particularly concerned about sinking a ton of money into a renovation we won’t get back at resale.
As a first-time homeowner, I have about a million questions and a growing fear for my bank account.
Questions for those who’ve been through this:
Who do I even call first? A general contractor? Bathroom remodeling company? Someone who specializes in water damage?
Any recommendations for contractors in the DMV who have experience with older bathrooms and potential moisture damage?
Does this sound like a full gut-and-rebuild situation, or is there a reasonable chance we could address just the flooring?
What kind of price range should we realistically prepare ourselves for?
Given our plans to sell in 2–3 years, how would you approach this project without over-improving the house or losing a fortune?
Any advice, personal experiences, contractor recommendations, or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated.
Feeling pretty disheartened right now. We knew buying an older home would come with projects, but I’m starting to wonder if we bought ourselves a money pit.

Question May I have a sample ballot with me for early voting?
I'm thinking of doing early voting and am wondering if while filling a ballot, may I have a paper copy of a sample ballot with my own marked-in selections to use as reference?

Driver's Education for Low Income Family?
One of my neighbors is a single mom and low income but has a teenager who wants to get his license. We're in Gaithersburg and I was wondering if there is any program that helps families in these situations where they cannot afford classes. I was looking on my own and came across something at MC where they offered scholarships to take driver's ed courses through MC, but when I got to the bottom of the page, it turned out it was from 2025. I couldn't find anything when I looked further on their site.
Does anyone have any insight so I can maybe pass on information to the mom and her son?

AVOID: Falkland Chase and Murn Managed Properties
I know a post on this was made by another redditor 9 months ago. NOTHING HAS CHANGED. AVOID FALKLAND CHASE. The property has landed an At-Risk designation as of 2026 and is likely to worsen unless the county intervenes further. Murn Management is the worst management company I have EVER dealt with. I have reason to believe that they are falsifying 5 star reviews on google to hide the truth of what is happening here.
Residents are dealing with any number of the following:
- Mold
- Nonfunctional HVAC systems (lack of heating, lack of cooling)
- Building doors that DO NOT LOCK, leading to strangers and drug use in common areas
- Laundry machines that are out of order for MONTHS and filled with rancid, standing water
- Rat, roach, and mouse infestations
- Leaks and flooding
- Flooring and wall damage
- BANKING ISSUES!! Unauthorized charges, unreturned security deposits
- Maintenance requests that are marked as resolved without any action taken
- Maintenance requests that are ignored until the county intervenes
- Aggression/hostility/dishonesty from management, maintenance
Tenants have resorted to 311 to get repairs done because the maintenance portal is so ineffective. Deterioration of the property has lead to the formation of a tenant's union. Living here comes at risk of physical and psychological harm. AVOID!

Question Random power outages/surges/flickering for days. Anyone else in MoCo experiencing the same?
The entire list serve and Nextdoor are blowing up here (Silver Spring) about evryone's electricity going out, or flickering on and off for brief moments. People report electronics being damaged. The messages make it sound like Pepco is aware, but it has been going on for days.
Is anyone else in MoCo experiencing stuff like this? Heh, I wonder if it is being partly caused by all of the massive new strain due to data centers, or if there is some other underlying cause.
