Maryland Monthly Marketplace - Advertise your Maryland services, events, or merchandise here.

Since we have rules against advertising on the main part of the subreddit, we figured it would be nice to create a thread where users can get a little more leeway when it comes to advertising.

Use this thread to advertise any Maryland related services or merchandise to the users of r/Maryland. Got an Etsy store? Drop it below! Your favorite restaurant running a great special? Tell us about it!

Rules for this thread:

  1. All items, events and services must be related to Maryland in some way.
  2. Services and sales cannot be country or worldwide. (Walmart is having a sale! Is not okay. Old Bay is being sold at the Annapolis Walmart for 50¢ is appropriate)
  3. Ads should be posted by regular r/Maryland users, not bots or brand new accounts/accounts which have no connection to Maryland.
  4. We may remove any ad at any time for any reason should we deem it inappropriate.
  5. Any services or products advertised here must be legal in the state of Maryland.

This thread may evolve as time goes on and we see what it's used for.

The mods of r/Maryland do not endorse any products or services on this thread. Use your head, we will not intervene in any transactional disputes between any users.

Hello, I am Katie Thomson, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Transportation. Ask me anything!

Hello Reddit!

I was appointed by Governor Wes Moore last December to serve in this role, but I’ve worked in the transportation field for more than 30 years. Previously I had the honor to serve at the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration.

The Maryland Department of Transportation is responsible for maintaining our state’s transportation system – and it’s more than just roads! Our responsibilities also include the Port of Baltimore, the Francis Scott Key Bridge Rebuild Project, BWI Thurgood Marshall International Airport and our state’s public transit system, including MTA’s service in Baltimore and the upcoming Purple Line. We also oversee the Motor Vehicle Administration, which helps our residents through vehicle registration and driver licensing. We are Serious About Safety for all users of our system, and we want to ensure transportation in Maryland is sustainable into the future.

I am eager answer your questions about transportation (or where my favorite place to run in Maryland is!).

Proof:

I’ll start answering questions at 12 p.m. on Monday, October 5th, and plan to stick around for about one hour.

AMA!

EDIT (12:10 p.m.): Hi, I'm Katie and look forward to answering your questions!

EDIT: (12:37 p.m.) We are answering questions. There was a little glitch but the mods are working on fixing that. Our answers should appear soon.

EDIT: (1:00 p.m.) Thanks everyone!

The Maryland Renaissance Festival made me smarter.

Today was the last day of this season's Festival, and after umpteen years of attending, it finally dawned on me that I can use the shields on the palisade wall to help me find my car. What can I say? I'm an unwashed peasant.

MD Politics Andy Harris used a compressor on his voice in new commercials to sound more 'manly'

He ran ads during football. Maybe it wasn't a compressor, but he used something to make him sound like less of a whiny twat. We've all heard you speak, you mega-douche—you do not sound like you do in the new commercials.

He sucks. Vote him out.

MD Travel & Relocation Visiting From UK, any advice?

Hi guys,

I should be visiting my girlfriend’s family in Glen Burnie. Is there anything I need to know about Baltimore and Glen Burnie?

It will be my first time in the United States. I’m a bit of an anxious traveller.

Any hidden gems I should visit and where should I avoid?

MD Nature Fall Visit to Paw Paw Tunnel and Green Ridge State Forest

Before winter arrives, I went on one last big outdoor hike. I visited Paw Paw Tunnel and Green Ridge State Forest in western Maryland, and the fall leaves were absolutely gorgeous. Some highlights:

  • The Paw Paw Tunnel is a 3,118 foot tunnel for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. Workers blasted it out of the rocks in the mid 1800s because the mountains came down so sharply to the Potomac River that they couldn't build the canal right alongside it. The tunnel is farther than it looks, and dark and wet, so bring a flashlight and wear boots/waterproof shoes. But it was very cool and this theme felt appropriate for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MW5w0-xOXu8
  • You can come back via a steep two mile trail over the bluff--it climbs about 350 feet. The woods are beautiful with a bunch of historical markers (including a notice about how the Irish and German canal workers disliked each other and got into fights and riots). And at one spot there is a nice partial view of the Potomac River.
  • The Potomac River was quite shallow. It couldn't have been more than a few feet deep--just 2-3 feet in a lot of places. Still, I saw people kayaking and canoeing.
  • Green Ridge State Forest lives up to its name--in additional to the big Green Ridge it has many smaller ridges. They aren't super big but they are rugged, and there are a lot of them. There isn't a lot of flat ground in the park, so hiking is a really good workout. Most of the trails go through dense woods, although the trees are relatively small. The most beautiful hike I did was the Deep Run/Big Run trail, which takes you along a rocky creek and up some very steep hills.
  • Be aware that a lot of the forest's roads are not paved. The roads are either gravel or dirt, and pretty rough in many areas.
  • I saw a number of white-tailed deer, squirrels, chipmunks, hawks and vultures, songbirds, and geese. I also saw some droppings that were either from a coyote or a black bear.

All in all, this was by far the wildest place in Maryland I have been to. I felt like I was out in the wilderness a lot of the time.
