Mod Post Rule Clarifications: Constructive Participation & City‑Bashing

Hi everyone, this is an update from the mod team.

Over the past few months, we’ve noticed a growing pattern in certain threads (especially ones about crime or frustrations in the city): comments that jump straight to “Surrey is trash,” “typical Surrey,” “this city is hopeless,” or similar sweeping negativity.

These comments don’t add anything to discussion, they derail threads, and they attract more pile‑on hostility. They also drown out the people who are trying to talk about real issues in a constructive way.

To keep r/SurreyBC a space where people can actually talk about the city (the good, the bad, AND the complicated) we’ve clarified two rules:

Rule 2: Acceptable Content Content must be constructive and relevant to Surrey. No explicit, illegal, defamatory, or harassing content. Posts should contribute positively to discussion.

Sweeping, non‑constructive negativity about Surrey or its residents will be removed. Criticism is welcome with context or solutions, but contempt‑driven city‑bashing is not allowed.

Rule 7: No Toxic Trolling Do not disrupt discussion with hostile, inflammatory, or bad‑faith comments. This includes contempt‑driven, low‑effort negativity about Surrey or its residents.

Inflammatory or provocative content that derails civil discussion will be removed. Users who enter threads only to antagonize, provoke, or bash the city will be banned.

What this DOESN'T mean...........

We are not banning criticism.

You can still talk about:

  • crime
  • governance
  • infrastructure
  • development
  • frustrations with services
  • your lived experiences

…as long as it’s done in good faith.

What this DOES mean...........

We’re removing anything that falls in line with any of the sentiments: “Surrey is trash” “This city is a dump” "Typical Surrey people” “Why does anyone live here”

so, generally drive‑by negativity with no context

These comments don’t help anyone and they drag the whole sub down.

Why we’re doing this:

We want r/SurreyBC to be a place where people can: - share experiences - ask questions - discuss issues and vent CONSTRUCTIVELY - celebrate wins - disagree respectfully

all without every thread turning into a hate‑pile.

Thanks to everyone who contributes positively, you’re the reason this community works. And remember, if you see any rule-violating posts or comments, please report them so that we can review.

If you have questions or constructive feedback, feel free to drop them below.

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Rider Express BC to AB during winter?

Hi, I wanted to ask if anyone has used the rider express from Vancouver/Surrey to Calgary during December or January in the past few years, and how your experience was? This is the first time I’m trying out the bus and was told by friends that the commute is unsafe during the winter.

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Does mail take longer to arrive in Surrey?

I'm not sure if it's just me, but for those who moved to Surrey from other parts of Metro Vancouver, have you noticed that mail takes longer to arrive here compared to other cities?

I'd love to hear about your experiences, especially with important mail. Thanks!

Ask SurreyBC ❓ When does the gate to the Newton’s Athletic Park parking lot get closed?

I’m asking because I like parking there when driving to Surrey for events, and I’d like to know when park management closes the gate to the parking lot so that I can better plan for getting Surrey and determining whether or not I should drive or take public transit, thanks a bunch

Politics 🐎 So, what's Garry Thind going to do?

So, Garry Thind just won his seat as Surrey-Guildford MLA, but just a week ago also won his seat as school Trustee. While School trustee is part time work, being an MLA is most definitely a full time job. There's no way one person can do both simultaneously. And I checked, it's the same person.

Politics 🐎 Reminder: if you’re in line at a polling station by 8pm, you will get to vote

If you’re rushing to vote by 8pm and encounter a long line-up at the voting location, don’t get discouraged and leave!
At 8pm someone from inside the polling station will come to the back of the line to mark the end of the line - everybody in line by 8pm will get to vote, no matter how long it takes.

Local News 🤯 A subway network for British Columbia’s new largest city. A win for BC, and a path forward for Surrey.

I saw this posted on r/transit so I wanted to post it here. The author, Reece Martin, ran (runs?) the RMTransit YouTube channel and talks about/advocates for transit.

Interestingly, the author/site thinks the new line should also go to 156 Street, past Guildford. They don't like gaps in the network, and building three kilometres as a separate extension would be costly in the long run. It would also get the SkyTrain closer to Highway 1 for a future extension and express buses on the highway. Also, they state the Newton-Guildford section should be its own separate line instead of direct to downtown Vancouver, as the Expo Line is almost at capacity. There would be an interchange at Surrey Central or King George, probably rebuilding Surrey Central to the east of the existing station; my dream would be interchanges at both stations to reduce crowding when making transfers.

The article also points out how the BC Conservatives preferring SkyTrain over BRT echos how the BC Liberals wanted a SkyTrain extension to Coquitlam instead of LRT in the early 2000s (and how the conservatives pushing for more ambitious transit plans is politically strange).

Wholesome ❤️ Putting myself out there! This is for the girlies.

Hey! I hope everyone’s doing well. I’m Jess and 21F in the surrey area.

I moved to BC awhile back and haven’t had much luck making friends. I’d love to meet some likeminded girls and just hangout!

I’m very open minded and I enjoy going on walks, anything sports related, trying new things, I’m open to anything really! I also like to gym and am into spirituality and meditation. I love deep convos and hearing new perspectives.

Hope to hear back :)

EDIT: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE, I keep getting dms from men. I don’t want to be friends with you.

Politics 🐎 Municipal vs Provincial Ballot Protocol?

Just wondering why when I voted in the Surrey municipal election I put my ballot through a machine to be counted and the provincial election ballot just went into a cardboard box?

I am not trying to imply that I trust one more than the other, as I do not know enough about it to make that judgement.

I was just surprised that the municipal election had “better” (newer) practices than the provincial. I would have expected the opposite

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Where can I properly dump junk left behind by former tenant?

Hi all,

A previous tenant left a bunch of junk behind and I'm trying to dump it properly.

He left behind:

- Old shoes

- card board boxes with lumber cutoffs

- clay pots with soil

- drywall cut offs

Is there a place I can take it all?

Update: I ended up going to North Surrey Recycling centre in Port Kells. The staff were super nice and very helpful! It was $28 for approximately 300 pounds of junk. They do not take Amex so something to consider. Thank you all for the responses!

Politics 🐎 Three Surrey mayors unite to endorse the BC Conservatives ahead of the provincial election

Post image
227 Upvotes

Surrey Mayor-elect Doug McCallum appeared alongside former mayors Dianne Watts and Linda Hepner at an event in Newton, where they endorsed Lorne Doerkson and the BC Conservatives.

It's interestin to see three Surrey mayors from different administrations publicly backing the same provincial party. Is this less about party and more about locking in those two new commitments,a new hospital and Skytrain to Newton?

Does an endorsement like this move votes this close to Saturday?

Politics 🐎 What party are you voting for in the provincial elections?

I have always voted so my voice is heard, but this time I simply don't see ANY party I want in power:

Conservatives are in a state of disarray and voting for them will invite US interference
Greens are an option, but I honestly don't believe their leader is strong enough to deal with the US war we are currently involved in
NDP said they will put a tax on the rich - which will only make them leave the province and invest their money elsewhere. As well as Eby being the ass that thought this was a good time for an election.

I am seriously considering writing in "none of the above" for the first time in my over 60 years.
