Support Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

Discussion Keyboard layout.

This may have been covered before, but for those that struggle with the regular keyboard, try going in Settings - Display Zoom. The keyboard will now be bigger and might make your keyboard more useful, depending on your typing style.

This does make everything else larger, but trying something never hurts!

Discussion Has anyone else's dictation gotten significantly worse on the new iPhone / iOS 27? My iPhone 14 was better at this

I upgraded from an iPhone 14 to an iPhone 18 Pro, and dictation is the one thing that has clearly gone backwards. I use it constantly for texts and notes, so this isn't a once in a while thing for me.

Three things I keep running into:

  1. **Accuracy is worse.** It mishears ordinary words noticeably more often than my 14 did. I find myself going back and fixing dictated messages way more than I used to.

  2. **Auto-punctuation is out of control, and I can't turn it down.** It's inserting commas and periods much more aggressively. The Auto-Punctuation toggle I expected to find in Settings - General - Keyboard just isn't there, and Smart Punctuation doesn't seem to control this.

  3. **The weirdest one - phantom words when I stop.** About 25% of the time, when I tap the mic to stop dictating, it appends a word I didn't say at the end, usually "yes" or "yeah."

I've already filed these with Apple through iPhone Feedback - the first two in late September, and the phantom word one in early October. Apple confirms receipt, but that's it, no follow-up, and I haven't seen any of this mentioned in update notes since.

Is anyone else seeing this, especially anyone who upgraded from an older phone and has a direct comparison? Am I missing a setting or a workaround somewhere? And has Apple acknowledged this anywhere that I've missed?

It feels like a basic feature that a lot of people rely on every day quietly got worse on the newest hardware, and I'd love to know if it's just me.

Hi. What actually happens when I do this 'Block and Report as spam'? I am aware that robocallers will use different numbers, but wanted to know if all I can do is play "whack-a-mole" with these calls. Thanks.

Support Phone randomly disconnects from wifi despite still being visible

Post image
• Upvotes

Anybody else have this issue? My router is well within range and visible in the network list, but for some reason my phone just randomly disconnects from the network. Auto connect to network is on, wifi assist is off, I genuinely have to keep cellular data off to avoid using it all accidentally due to my phone just randomly deciding it doesnt want to use wifi.

Are there any solutions to this? It's been a persistent issue for months now.

Support Can't load or view status

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I’m having a really frustrating issue with WhatsApp on my iPhone 18 Pro running iOS 27. I’m using the regular WhatsApp app, not WhatsApp Business.
My WhatsApp Status feature stops working about 1–2 days after reinstalling the app.
The problems I’m experiencing:
I cannot upload a Status. It gives me the error “Couldn’t send message.”
My Updates tab is completely blank. I can’t view anyone else’s Status updates either.
Regular WhatsApp messages and sending photos in chats work perfectly fine.
Things I’ve already tried:
Restarting my iPhone.
Resetting network settings.
Updating iOS.
Uninstalling and reinstalling WhatsApp.
Testing on both Wi-Fi and mobile data.
Contacting WhatsApp Support.
Nothing has permanently fixed the issue. Reinstalling WhatsApp seems to help temporarily, but the problem returns after a day or two.
One important detail: WhatsApp works perfectly on WhatsApp Desktop, including while the Status feature is broken on my iPhone. This makes me wonder whether the issue is specific to the iPhone app or something affecting my account on mobile.
Has anyone experienced the same problem, particularly with the Updates tab being completely blank and Status uploads failing while normal chats still work?
I’d really appreciate any suggestions beyond the usual troubleshooting steps. I’ve tried pretty much everything I can think of!
Thank you!

Discussion Outlook calendars via exchange randomly turning on in iOS Calendar app

• Upvotes

TL;DR How do I keep shared calendars from turning themselves back on in the iOS Calendar app?

I have Outlook 365 at work and have shared that account to my personal iPhone 17 Pro with only my calendar turned on so that I can see work obligations in one place with my personal calendar.

In Outlook, everyone on my team has shared their calendars with each other. These calendars show up in the iOS Calendar app as expected. I have un-checked all of them and turned off the option to have their events block my availability.

However, periodically one of these shared calendars will randomly turn itself back on and start showing notifications. I go back and turn it off again and it stays off for a while, but today I had two different ones do this a few hours apart.

Has anyone else run into this? How did you solve it?

Support Make Siri not listen after reading out notifications through AirPods

• Upvotes

Is there a setting to do this? Very frustrating how she will read a notification then hear one tiny sound and try to call like seven different people. I’m tired of being scared of my own AirPods when I get a notification like I’m hiding from raptors in Jurassic park.

Discussion What’s the point if it still shows after blocking the source?

So if you block a news source in Apple News it just blocks the image and not the article? That seems short sighted.

Discussion Why doesn’t Apple install newest app version?

• Upvotes

One of the apps I previously had, I offloaded in July. I went to redownload it yesterday (October, for future reference), and it redownloaded, however it was the same version from July. Then the App Store said there is an update from back in August. Is this by design? Seems odd not to download the newest version. Happening to anyone else?

Support Accessibility’s Voice Control stops AirPod Pro 3 audio play/pause (stem squeeze)

Since recently activating voice control (accessibility), whenever I squeeze AirPod Pro 3 stem to play/pause audio it makes some system sound (mid-low tone repeated 3 times quickly) and does not play/pause like it always has. 😢

edit: only while screen is unlocked. While locked squeezing functions expectedly

Discussion iOS should have a 1x2 widget option

• Upvotes

iOS should have a 1x2 widget option for higher information density

The 2x2 widgets are nice but even those are too big. I feel like users and the platform overall would benefit by Apple allowing 3rd party devs to make 1x2 widgets instead of the smallest being 2x2. Things like counters and other related simple widgets that show / emphasize numbers and a small amount of text would do just fine with a 1x2 widget with slightly smaller text and we could fit more of those widgets on a given Home Screen.

Help! My phone is saying I don’t have enough iPhone space to backup to iCloud. Why does it need iPhone space to backup to iCloud? How much iPhone space does a backup need? How can I make the space up? I already deleted so many photos and apps. I have 2TB of iCloud storage with 1/4 of it used. I am using 251GB/256GB of my iPhone storage.

Discussion Action button

Post image

I think one of the best features in ios is the ability to add a shortcuts folder to the action button. I can keep my home screen as empty ad possible, and access any app no matter what I’m doing or without unlocking my phone.

( btw u guys can set up the apple watch to unlock your phone when its nearby, no face id or anything needed except for wallet stuff)

Support Apple Calendar question

When I open the sidebar of my Calendar it shows multiple shared and multiple color Untitled Calendars from a colleague who sent me invites to meetings, etc. If I select to delete any of the Untitled Calendars, it warns me that “All events associated with the calendar will also be deleted.” Since all these events are from the same Untitled Calendars from the same colleague I believe it would delete the event or all events of those Untitled Calendars. If I like to keep the events for reference should I just leave it alone and not delete them? Thanks

My friend was messing with my phone and enabled the setting to only allow selected sites. Discussion So angry about Siri

• Upvotes

I am so angry about siri and voice dictation. I am still on iOS 26. Does it get better in iOS 27?

„Hey Siri. Play music from playlist named regenerate“
- I found music playlist rock music from 1980. Playing now!

„Hey Siri. I wanted music from my own playlist. It‘s called regenerate“.
- I did not find a track called playlist in your playlist.

„Hey Siri. Thats a playlist, not a song.“
- I found the following on the web, „thats a playlist not a song“.

„Hey Siri. Text my wife „what do you want for dinner?“
- I will text your wife „what about your own finger?“

„Hey Siri. How heavy is the earth?“
- I didn‘t find any contact named „Breawrth“ in your contact list

I AM GETTING SICK AND MAD ABOUT THIS

Support New IOS update: Clock app from dropdown control center

Post image
9 Upvotes

This might be a stupid question, but is there any way to have it so the clock/timer widget on my control center opens the actual clock app instead of thinking I want to set an actual timer? I was able to do this prior to the new IOS update, but it’s become frustrating since it’s a habit and I need to set alarms regularly for work. Now I have to exit out and use the spotlight search to access the clock app
