Discussion I finally switched to apple and I’m not going back

ive owned multiple phones from most brands throughout my life and ive switched to an iphone 14 for 2 months now and i cant see myself turning back.

What truly shocked me was how well optimized it was. my previous phone was a xiaomi 13T. it was big, ugly and mid at most categories but it was very durable (which was great for me because im extremely clumsy) and the charging was the best i had ever seen, fully charging from 0% in like 30 mins, therefore i never considered an upgrade. however it then updated and it got destroyed completely all for a fake control centre and a fake 10 fps dynamic island. As if that wasn’t enough, now with this update if the screen turned off while playing music through bluetooth the sound would be so distorted to the point that you couldn’t hear anything.

I decided to upgrade to a refurbished flagship, settled on an iphone and everything, other than the keyboard, was an upgrade. Every app is so well optimized and so pretty. Many things are a lot simpler and a lot easier like passwords and payments and its truly such a better experience overall. Even if by the time i have to upgrade apple is making subpar flagships i cant see myself going back to android.

edit: minor punctuation and sentence straight errors and added paragraphs to make it easier to read

Discussion I'm returning my iPhone Duo

Post image
0 Upvotes

Disclosure: I used AI to proofread this post because English isn't my first language.

Let me start by saying I loved the iPhone Duo. Having such a big screen whenever you want it is powerful, and depending on what you do, it can really change your productivity. But the outer screen makes it a bad phone. Here's why:

1. It's bad for killing time. I use my phone for content, but more often than not, I just want to pass the time: on the toilet, in transit, or peeking at Twitter during a boring meeting. With the Duo, all of that was a hassle. Folded, it's heavy and the outer screen is too small to be useful. Unfolded, the experience is great, but it feels like full immersion when all I wanted was a quick break from boredom.

2. No Face ID. This frustrated me a lot. I set up my Apple Watch to unlock it, but everywhere else Touch ID meant hunting for the power button, which I kept losing track of depending on how I'd opened the phone. Once, it frustrated me so much that I went back to my old phone to get something done.

3. Going back to my iPhone 17 Pro was a relief. I immediately realized how easy it is to use. No hassle, no tiny screen, no hand gymnastics to find the Touch ID button, no heavy folded phone.

4. The one thing I loved was running Claude full screen. It meant I didn't touch my laptop at all. But I already spent CAD $3,300 on that laptop, and the phone was $3,200. Even though price isn't really an issue for me, I couldn't justify it, and after less than a week, my hands are tired from holding it.

I think I would have kept it if only it had Face ID.

Discussion We’ve heard crackgate - How about steak gate?

Ive owned the phone since release day, seen all the other issues people have been having with the hinge. (So far no hinge issues)

I was using my phone to see some YT while cooking my second steak ever. The phone was probably ~2 feet away from the pan.

After finishing, I noticed there was ~5 tiny tiny specs of grease on the inner screen. I tried wiping it with my hand and noticed it “smeared”, after trying a bit more forcefully I noticed that those parts of the screen felt smooth, almost as if the grease ate threw or peeled those parts.

Worst part is if I try to rub those areas it continues expanding.

Will probably take to apple to get opinion, but found it weird that if it was the grease, apple didn’t think people would put their grimes hands while eating?

TL:DR: Me cook steak, tiny grease spots hit phone screen, me wipe, screen coating go bye-bye and spots get bigger.
Me confused why expensive phone no survive greasy fingers.

Discussion The iphone duo was meh, instant return.

Good thing I hold on to my 13 mini and 14 pro.
In comparison to my Huawei phone, that I would use while I’m in Asia, the iPhone duo is leaps and bounds behind, yes the screen on duo is little nicer but that’s about it.

Discussion Am I making a huge mistake by using my personal Apple ID on my work iPhone?

Hi everyone,

I recently received an iPhone 16 from my company, and I’m trying to figure out the best way to set it up.

I already have my own personal iPhone with my Apple ID, iCloud, photos, contacts, passwords, etc.
My work iPhone is company-owned and managed through MDM. It currently has no Apple ID signed in.

I’m considering four options:
1. Use my existing personal Apple ID.
2. Create a new Apple ID using my corporate email address.
3. Create a completely separate Apple ID using a different personal email address, exclusively for work.
4. Don’t use an Apple ID at all.

My main concern is keeping my personal and professional lives completely separate.
I don’t want my personal photos, messages, passwords or other iCloud data syncing to a company-owned device.

I’m also thinking long-term. If I eventually leave the company or return the phone, I don’t want to deal with Apple ID issues, Activation Lock or losing access to an account linked to my corporate email.

For those of you who have a company-issued iPhone, what setup do you use?

Would you create a separate Apple ID, use your work email, or simply leave the phone without one?
Curious to hear what has worked best for you, especially from people in IT.

Discussion Is there an iPhone that doesn’t make every pore look like a crater?

I’ve googled this. I know there’s a lot of issues/settings/HDR but no one gives a straight answer, just a lot of commiserating. also if there’s a way to fix it with the settings, is there a way where it’s saved and I don’t have to adjust all the settings for 5 mins before taking a photo?

TIA!

Discussion What bugs have you come across on the Duo and do we report them?

I’ve come across a really annoying bug when using Mail where I couldn’t scroll up or down on the front screen and then couldn’t close any apps after this. The only workaround appears to be turning the phone off and on again.

What bugs have you come across?

Is there a way to officially report them to Apple?

I’m trying to download all my videos and photos from iCloud. I want them on my nas. I have 700gbs worth(don’t ask) and no matter what I do, I can’t change the default location to my storage drives when setting up iCloud for windows.

Support Is the iPhone 18 Pro's display meant to be more cooler-toned?

Thumbnail

EDIT: I learned that there are panel differences; however, I still think there is a little more to it. I actually don't mind this cooler tone, but I do mind the lack of vibrancy on the white color. Although, turning off auto-brightness seems to remove some soft-cap on the brightness and makes it more brighter. Going forward, I'll be doing just that. Thanks everyone.

I just finished setting up and restoring a back up on my new iPhone 18 Pro, and I feel like something is off. Earlier when going through the set-up process, the white had a pinkish tone to it, so I thought that maybe my screen protector is effecting my display. However, I wanted to test to see if I'm imagining things or not, so I compared my iPhone 18 Pro versus my iPhone 15 Pro - max brightness, true tone off, and night shift off. Note that the 18 Pro has a Spigen screen protector and the 15 Pro has a Torras screen protector.

The photo on the left is the iPhone 18 Pro and on the right is the iPhone 15 Pro. Although, please note that the photos don't really do it justice. I loaded up a full screen color website on both my devices and immediately you could tell that the 18 Pro seemed darker toned than the 15 Pro. I dug a little deeper and found that by toggling off auto-brightness on the 18 Pro, the white got much brighter. Is this intentional? I never had this problem on my 15 Pro and I always used auto brightness on the 15 Pro. However, it seems like going forward I'll have to disable the option on my 18 Pro.

Support Possible malware, how screwed am I

So this morning I received an email from my dentist claiming they sent me a secure message. I have an appointment coming up soon and have gotten emails in the past about verifying insurance information, all that. Anyways I double checked the email and it was correct, the attachment that was sent looked legit with their letterhead so I clicked the link. It prompted me to download a reader to see their message so I clicked to confirm download to figure out what they sent. Nothing happened so I looked for the file in downloads and opened it to a blank document. It took me a while but I realized I was an idiot and shouldn’t have done any of that.

It was a .bat file and the attachment told me that I had to do it on a laptop or desktop. Since I’m on an iPhone it seems like that file shouldn’t have been able to do anything but I did click a lot of things to get to the download part. I quickly went through the process of cleaning my Safari data/history, I checked for other apps and VPN accounts, I deleted the files from my Files folder on the phone and from recently deleted, I restarted my phone, also updated it from 27.1 to 27.2.

I’ve tried to avoid opening anything yet that would have sensitive information. Should I go through and reset passwords? I typically use the apple password manager. As we’ve established I’m a bit of an idiot so if there’s anything I’m overlooking please let me know. I’ve been fretting over this for the last few hours.

Discussion Switched back to Pro Max

Got the Duo on launch day, returned today to get the 18 Pro Max instead. Coming from the 16 Pro Max.

What I liked about the Duo:

  • The inner screen is fantastic. I didn't mind the matte screen / subpar colors because the size is unbeatable. Considered getting the new iPad Mini but the footprint of the Duo when folded is unbeaten

  • Multimedia: YouTube, Netflix, Delta are obviously very good.

  • Getting work done: I traveled a lot in the five days I kept the phone and managed to get work done (Slack, email, remote coding tools) in Uber and flights, something that's unimaginable with the bar-style iPhones

  • Battery life: Even with heavy use of the inside screen, I still had ~10% left at the end of the day

  • Very, very premium feel. Coming from the iPhone 16 Pros, I'm not a fan of the new aluminum on the 18 Pros, but a huge fan of the Air and Duo's material. Star white is a fantastic looking phone

What I didn't like about the Duo:

  • The outer screen is horrid. Even the optimized apps like first party apps, there's so little screen that it just frustrates you more.

  • Thickness. I could wield the Pro Max's fine but because of Duo's thickness when closed, I had a bad time reaching to swipe down the notification center. Surprisingly I could wield it fine when it was unfolded

  • Touch ID is fine but Face ID is unmatched, simply because there's a lot of ways to hold your phone and you have to max out the five finger limit on Touch ID to get it to unlock for all of the ways you might hold your phone

  • I missed the action button more than I realized

  • Unpolished experience: It was a pretty buggy experience, for iOS, first party apps and third party apps. It sometimes wouldn't play the folding animation, bad orientation. Instagram and YouTube was still really buggy for me; Instagram for instance would just have reels be blurred out on certain sections when playing with the inner screen. This was the primary reason why I returned the phone. I know it's not Apple's fault for third party apps being unoptimized/buggy, but I'm not willing to pay $2k+ for that experience.

  • I don't know why it can't just have the iPad version of apps

Anecdotally, the Apple Store employee said that I was the first person return the Duo, so keep in mind I might be a minority. Maybe I'll pick it up next year. I think if you game a lot and use the inner screen a lot, I can see why it'd be a great phone for you. Unfortunately, I don't mind phones being boring so I just returned it for the 18 Pro max.

Discussion Question about in store purchase

Hi! I just got an iPhone from the Apple Store today. I mistakenly used a different credit card than I wanted out of habit. I wanted to know if there will be any issue going back to the store to “return/repurchase” the iPhone with a different card. No trade in credit was applied. I’ve already opened and set up the phone. Thanks for your help!

Edit: sorry I did ask support and they said I would need to return the phone but buy a different unit because the opened phone is no longer sellable? So I’m hoping someone may have more experience or insight with something like this!

I have an iphone 16 and it has been working pretty well so far, I usually dont let it die but this one time I did and when i booted it back up the apps looked like this. I tried powering off and back on again, still no fix. A lot of these apps are things I can’t delete, so I can’t try that either.

Support Apple won't send my money back after returning iPhone

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I purchased the iphone 18 pro max on pre order and got it delivered the following Friday as expected.
After using the phone after transferring the data from iCloud, the phone was restarting once or twice a day for no reason.
I started a return within the two weeks allowance to return the iphone and Apple sent me a QR code for a label print and return at Fedex.
I was expecting a refund on my card and never got it after two weeks.
I reached to Apple customer service and they informed that refund was processed and within 5 business days I would be getting my refund (message from Apple on 10/06).
Refund never came. I called Chase and they said no credit has been issue from Apple.
Then few days ago I called Apple again and asked to escalate to Senior advisor and explained my situation again probably for the 8th time now. Senior advisor transferred me to Sales team. I had to explain all over again and the guy was confused on why Senior would transfer to sales. Then Sales guy transferred me to After Sales agent. Apparently Fedex lost the package mid transit and it's not moving from Maryland for a while and won't update the status. After Sales told me Apple won't refund me until they don't get the package.
Yesterday I got an email from Apple saying they won't issue a refund at all anymore.

Email: "Information about your order.
Order Number:
We have completed our review with the carrier regarding your shipment and have determined that we are unable to provide a replacement or process a refund."

I'm completely disappointed and frustrated with Apple. The way they treated me on the phone throughout the whole situation of lying first saying it was refunded and then they finally spoke the truth on not issuing a refund.
I also canceled my iphone duo order yesterday and sold all my stocks. I don't plan on doing business anytime soon with them.
I opened a dispute through Chase and I'm crossing finger for the charge back. If not: police report and taking them to court to get my money back.

Hey everyone, has anyone here used Lockdown Mode on their iPhone for more than a day? What was your experience, and did it noticeably change how you use your device day to day? Curious what broke, what you got used to, and whether you'd recommend it, either for privacy reasons or just in general.

Discussion Favorite and least favorite iPhone?

My favorite iPhone is the 17. It was one of the best upgrades, it gave the action button, camera control, a19 chip, great battery life, good camera, USB C. My least favorite phone is the iPhone Air for obvious reasons. Overpriced for a worse camera, worse battery life, and horrible in every way

Discussion A workaround if you don't like the new Apple Music icon

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

I use Home Screen shortcuts in iOS / iPadOS to work around some of the uglier Apple icons. It's a shortcut that opens Apple Music, then you can hide the original app. You can also duplicate this and make new ones for any other icons you don't like. The only downside I've found is that you don't get a given app's custom contextual menu when you hold down on the icon.

To add this to your Home Screen, open this in the Shortcuts app, tap the little downward arrow next to the name at the top, then choose "Add to Home Screen". It'll ask you if you want to use a Symbol for the icon, choose Image, then pick one of the images I have (or use your own). I prefer a variant of the more colorful of the 2015 logo, I think that was the best looking one.

https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/7d055f0cbf74459ab6ea403dc21125e5

It's a pretty simple thing that I have a feeling most people aren't aware of. I have more of these for Safari and other apps, if anyone wants the icons for them. I hope this helps some people.
