I was getting fed-up with Android quirks and Googles constant entshitification and their borderline pathological ads and data mining, so I decided to get me an Apple 17.
To a certain extent this was an impulse buy after being annoyed about the latest bugs, but was also postponing buying a new phone, had it for 5 years and other than the battery, it was still going strong.
First shock was I didn’t do research well enough and was absolutely taken by surprise that the 17 does not have a fingerprint sensor.
Tbh, even before I figured that, the first annoyance came as I was trying to transfer data from Android to Apple. The link kept failing, probably due to Android and none of the fall-back methods worked. Finally I had to give up and went blank-slate.
During my research, done by mostly using AI, I made sure I will be able to use my Google account with its hefty subscription storage on Apple. Well, can’t be done. One can use mail and install photos, but seems I could not store my new photos back to the Google account.
Next was Apple CarPlay on my Golf 7, the infotainment being the single biggest reason this transition was triggered. To my utter surprise, my dealership upgraded 2022 head unit, which was working fine with Android auto didn’t even detect Apple CarPlay. Found the phone as a usb device, connected via BT and that was it.
Further I am using Brave to avoid ads on YouTube as they really are annoying, nobody normal can live with that and on Android it works well in the background. Not on Apple phone. Apple version of Brave is unusable unless adblocking is disabled, at which point it becomes unusable because of the aggressive advertising.
So in short, for a 900€ device, the entire ecosystem is crap and I very much regret buying it. Nothing works and since Apple was supposed to be a superior user experience, I feel it’s overhyped and compared to Android it’s unusable.
I wish I went the Android + Graphene way.
