Cultural Gift for brother's wedding

Hi everyone. My younger brother is getting married this December. I'm the elder sister, and I was thinking what's an appropriate gift to give to the couple? I want to give them something that will be useful and practical maybe - I wouldn't want to spend exorbitant amounts of money on impractical gifts.

Also, what should be my budget? This is the first wedding in our family so I'm clueless! Thanks in advance.

Cultural Learning another language made me realize how rarely we do contractions in urdu

As you all know colloquial English is very heavy on contractions and we are all used to “wanna gonna and I’d I’m” etc. There are even newer contractions like and => en, we regularly get exposed to online. I grew up thinking that it was a feature of the English language. We rarely shorten our Urdu and we mostly pronounce it as it is written even colloquially. It wasnt until I learned Spanish in college and I encountered so many English esque contractions that it struck me how formal is our informal Urdu. Like the biggest contraction I can think of is removing h/ہ in a few of our words like Kya ai instead of Kya hai.

Now that I think about it. It makes total sense as most Pakistanis learned Urdu formally through schools a few generations back and the language hasnt had enough time being spoken out in the streets to be heavily colloquialized. Urdu has definitely developed over the last 70 years but hasnt had the time to properly diverge yet.

Are there other colloquial contractions in Urdu yall can think of?

Discussion What is one thing you would change about Pakistan if you had the power to change it?

Pakistan has so much potential, and everyone has their own ideas about how to make it better.
If you could change just ONE thing in Pakistan to improve people’s lives, what would it be and why?
Would you choose education, the economy, the justice system, job opportunities, or something else?
I’m genuinely interested in hearing different perspectives from people living in Pakistan.

Ask Pakistan Feeling lost

Hey, I’m 27 and I run my father’s business. I practice meditation and recently started working out. I’ve been working on self-improvement for the past 2 years. I’ve faced many challenges in life and always come out stronger.

I’ve been focusing on my career and mental health for the past 2 years, during which I stopped socializing because I had a toxic and unproductive circle. My family is also a bit toxic, so I didn’t interact with them much during my journey of self-actualization. Lately, I’ve been feeling very lonely and pathetic, and I’m not sure why. I’m doing pretty well in life I’ve achieved some of the things my younger self was scared I would never achieve, and I have 2 very good friends, but no life partner or family I can rely on emotionally. To be honest, I’m feeling as lost and disoriented as this post.

If there’s anyone who has faced this, do you have any advice for me?

Discussion CSS or Financial Freedom: What Should I Choose?

I got married two years ago, right after graduating with a BS in International Relations. I wanted to pursue an MPhil and prepare for CSS or any other Grade 17 government job before marriage, but the man I loved promised to support my dreams after marriage. His mother is a PhD and professor who continued studying after marriage, so I trusted him.Unfortunately, after marriage, my MIL opposed my studies and my husband couldn’t stand up for me because he lost his job right after our wedding.

I am 27 now and have a 2 y/o daughter and live separately from my in-laws. For two years, I was consumed by childcare and household responsibilities, with no help, crying over the dreams I couldn’t pursue.

I’ve finally put my daughter in daycare so I can focus on myself. But something has changed in me, I can barely bring myself to open a book or study for competitive exams anymore.

My husband is supportive, but I desperately want to become financially independent. I’m good at makeup and genuinely enjoy it, so I’m considering building a career as a makeup artist and beauty creator.

Whenever I lie in bed, though, I still dream of becoming a CSS officer or securing any Grade 17 government job. I also struggle with the idea of becoming a “parlor wali” when my parents invested so much in my education.

I don’t know whether to pursue an MPhil, prepare for competitive exams, or focus on earning through makeup.

For those who’ve been through something similar, especially married women with children, what would you advise? Should I pursue my government-job dream, prioritize financial independence ?

So I'm 17 and I have a teacher who used to teach me we got along well exchanged socials barely talked so at one o'clock today she texted me "call 15" so I asked her what happened she told me that her father hit her and now he's outside her door holding a knife so I did the only thing I could I called 15 and talked with the operator we talked for about 5 minutes and he asked me a question "Aapka inse koi aur relation?" And at that point I saw it I was just a student she taught so I said no but then after five minutes the local station called me asked me the same questions and the person on the other line said "shah g ye kin kaamon mei parh rhe ho" so I knew that damn I might be cooked but I was on text with her till the police arrived at her house she told them about me she said I was just her student her father had fled the house and now I'm afraid that the police might call me....and I feel like such an asshole I mean I helped someone I should be happy but I was afraid for myself.

Social Looking for a Wife Outside My Family. Is Muzz a Good Option?

Hey everyone, M25 from Islamabad here.
I just have a simple question: Do marriage apps like Muzz actually work, or are they just a waste of time?
My parents want me to marry someone from within our extended family, but honestly, I don’t want that. My family is a bit toxic, so I’d rather find someone outside the family.
I’ve never had a girlfriend or been into dating. I’ve had female colleagues, but that’s pretty much it. I’m new to all this and genuinely don’t know how these apps work or whether people actually find serious partners on them.
So, for those who’ve tried Muzz or similar apps, what’s your experience been like? Are they worth giving a shot if you’re genuinely looking for marriage?
I’d really appreciate some honest advice!

Education Foreign Degree Equivalence

I applied in December last year online. I had to wait a bit for the IBCC equivalency but the dashboard has been stuck on 'application processing' since April. I have sent multiple tickets and called even emailing multiple people but all I get is just wait a bit. Every time I have created a new ticket since May has been resolved without any update or they keep asking for another attachment, like why do they need so much for a simple ticket? Has anyone had this issue? And is there a channel through which I can get a better reponse from? I live in Karachi but they closed the office.

Ask Pakistan new driver looking for advice from experienced drivers

am currently learning to drive and would appreciate some real life safety tips for city roads motorways underpasses and heavy traffic

I have seen reels of people driving at 150 180 or higher randomly switching lanes or staying in the right lane throughout just because they bought a new car or find it fun and people actually encourage them why is this so normalized when innocent lives are at risk

a few questions for experienced drivers

1 how does lane discipline work and what are the minimum and maximum speeds for each lane

2 when overtaking how do you judge the speed of cars approaching from behind if am going 70 should i wait until the lane is completely clear

3 how should beginners handle underpasses sharp turns heavy traffic and aggressive drivers

4 should beginners avoid driving at night for the first few months

5 what emergency items should i carry and how should i handle a tyre burst or breakdown

6 what mistakes or close calls taught you lessons every new driver should know

am not interested in speeding or showing off just want to drive safely without risking my life or anyone elses

would love to hear things you wish someone had told you when you started driving

Cultural First-cousin marriage - how worried should I be?

I'm a 25-year-old Pakistani living in Australia for the past 17 years. My rishta has been arranged with my first cousin in Pakistan, and we're due to get married this year. I find my fiancée attractive, like her personality and know the family well.

My concern is the genetic risk to our future children. My mum and my fiancée's dad are siblings, and her dad also married his cousin, meaning there's a history of cousin marriages across generations.

As far as I know, there's no history of genetic diseases, congenital abnormalities or inherited conditions in either family. However, I've read that repeated cousin marriages can increase genetic risks, with some sources quoting risks of around 10%.

I've raised genetic counselling and carrier screening with my mum, but she thinks bringing it up with the bride's family would be offensive, especially since my fiancée herself the product of a cousin marriage. She says we can arrange testing after the nikkah, but I'd prefer to understand the risks beforehand.

My questions:

- How much does repeated cousin marriage increase genetic risk compared with an ordinary first-cousin marriage?

- Is the 10% figure accurate for a situation like ours?

- Would you recommend genetic counselling and screening before marriage or before trying for children?

- Has anyone navigated this with a Pakistani family, and how did you approach it?

- I'm not against cousin marriage or questioning my fiancée. I just want to make an informed decision about our future children and would appreciate honest advice and personal experiences.

Discussion How good is the scope of home styling and event decor work in Pakistan?

Okay, so this is kinda a storytime, but I really need some advice from people who know the event industry or have started their own creative business in Pakistan

My sister has a solid STEM degree, certifications and experience in marketing and social media management, as well as baking, and she currently runs a home bakery. We have our nice, small bakery business. But bro, this woman has always been ridiculously artistic. Like, ever since we were kids, she's been drawing and sketching, and she's genuinely so good at it. She does calligraphy without ever learning it formally, makes resin art, and has actually gotten orders for her work from friends and family. People see her stuff and are like, wait, you made THIS?

But lately, I've been thinking about something else she's really good at, which is decor and styling.

For context, we have the SAME furniture in our house for past few months, but she keeps changing our drawing room settings, adding a few flowers here, changing the lighting there, moving some stuff around, and somehow the entire room looks completely different. Bro, I genuinely don't get it. I walk into the room and I'm like, wait, THIS IS OUR HOUSE? lol!!! And it's not even like she's buying a bunch of expensive new furniture. She just has this way of looking at a space and figuring out what would make it look better. We've got people coming over all the time, and they never fail to compliment her work or ask her for decor advice.

And bro... it's not just the drawing room, she's specifically SO good at intimate dinner settings and making everything look aesthetic. Like our dining table when we're having guests over??? I literally have no words for how she puts everything together. The plates, the glasses, the flowers, the whole setting, everything just looks so well put together

And the crockery situation in our house is a whole different story lmao. My mom and my sister are OBSESSED with crockery... we have literally run out of space in our house for more dishes but apparently that has never stopped them........... We have the whole golden dishes, then white ones, transparent glass ones and now they're getting into the black dishes too. I don't even know where we're gonna put all this stuff anymore. But the thing is, she actually knows how to use all of it so well. Like she knows what goes with what, how to set the table, what looks good together and how to make the whole thing look expensive and aesthetic. Meanwhile I am terrible at it!!!!!

I even call her Miss OCD sometimes (even her baking classfellows too) because bro, everything has to be PERFECT. The little details, the placement of things, the colors, everything... and somehow it actually works in her favour because her styling is genuinely so good. Even the way she decorates with our bakery stuff is amazing. The cakes, desserts, table decor, everything can come together so beautifully when she does it. And our dining table when we have nice guests over is honestly one of those things where people just sit there and start complimenting everything... and I'm here like girl HOW did you even think of all this 😭

Recently, one of our family friends asked her to help with the decor for a pretty big birthday party at their house, and she did such a good job. It was actually a paid gig though she never charged them, but seeing her do this for a real event got me thinking. Like, she's already a baker, she's into art, she's good at styling spaces, and she has experience with marketing and running a small business. Why not explore this properly?

The thing is, I know absolutely NOTHING about this industry. I'm the kind of person who looks at a room and thinks, yep, that's a room. My sister looks at the same room and apparently sees 47 different ways to transform it. So I'm here trying to figure out whether this could actually become something for her.

I'm thinking maybe home event decor, birthdays, bridal showers, intimate gatherings, aesthetic dinner setups, or even home styling. She could potentially combine her baking with decor too, like customized cakes and dessert tables that match the whole theme. Or maybe she could offer remote consultations where people send her pictures of their spaces and she helps them figure out the layout, colour palette, decor and everything. Idk, I'm just throwing ideas around here... but have no idea about the scope

So, people who've actually worked in this field, especially in Pakistan, I need your input:

  • Is there actually a decent market for smaller, personalized events, or is everyone mainly going for the big wedding planners?
  • How do people even get started in this business? Like, how do you go from doing decor for friends and family to actually getting paying clients?
  • Is remote event design or home styling something people would pay for, or do you pretty much HAVE to be physically present to make money?
  • Would it make sense for her to work with an established event planner first and learn the ropes?
  • And most importantly, how would you test whether this is worth pursuing without spending a ton of money upfront?

I could be probably a bit biased because she's my sister, but I've watched her do this stuff for years, and I genuinely think she's got something here. Besides, even if i unsee it, people dont. They always give the same suggestions - start event planning or something. She actually enjoys doing all these creative things, too, which is a big part of why I'm even thinking about it. I just don't know how to help her turn that talent into something more than a hobby.

So, if you've started a similar business, work in event planning, or know how this industry works in Pakistan, please share your experience... If you were starting from scratch, what would you do first?

Ask Pakistan Do you guys also struggle to find kids wear with fun prints, trendy cuts and good quality in Pakistan?

Parents, is it just me or is trendy summer kidswear hard to find in Pakistan? 😅 Where are the oversized tees, relaxed fits, cool graphics, fun prints, colour-blocking and playful designs we see internationally?

Also, many big retailers sell polyester-heavy fabrics, so lightweight-looking jersey doesn't necessarily mean cotton!

Where do you shop for your kids? What’s missing most: fun prints, trendy cuts, breathable fabrics or better quality?

Ask Pakistan why aren't news channels held accountable?

I don't currently live in Pakistan so I may be wrong but geo news and other news channels probably play the main role in spreading pro-army propaganda and concealing the truth but no one seems to criticize them?

from what I know, they didn't cover the Islamabad massacre of November where many innocent protesters were headshotted and their dead bodies hidden. They are not covering massacre in Kashmir where food supplies are cut off, network cut off, innocent women, men, children murdered for asking for rights and representation. They don't cover the innocent families bombed in Balochistan. They frame Balochistan as some rogue region that deserves carpet bombing daily. No nuance. No empathy for anyone living there

Now KPK's voice is suppressed and army has gained control by brute force. The long march was portrayed as some vicious uprising rather than people demanding medical treatment for Imran khan and justice overall.

They frame mineral extraction as some economic development but don't show the human rights that were violated and the government and law and order system the army dismantled to obtain that. They don't talk about who will benefit from these minerals. They show asim munir leading peace talks in Iran saluting next to the Pakistan flag but don't show these talks failing and leaving sharif and munir standing like the powerless pawns they are.

Then there's the hasna mana hai show on geo entertainment where they brought army and police officers on the show completely ignoring how they're merciless tools of asim munir and instead portraying them as friendly cute citizens

I even saw one news channel clip where the video cut off as soon as there was criticism about Israel?! It was posted on reddit somewhere.

edit - to clarify, what i meant to say is that public should also direct their hate towards these news channels. how these elegantly dressed and eloquently spoken news reporters utter words that reinforce the regime's grip on the country and get away with it. i guess not everyone can be like shaheed arshad sharif

Ask Pakistan Could JazzCash account limits cause a payment to fail?

I was looking into a bet 1x withdrawal and realised I'm not entirely sure how the receiving limits on mobile wallets work. I normally use JazzCash for everyday payments, but I haven't had to think much about those limits before. If the amount you're expecting is higher than your wallet allows, does the payment simply get rejected? Or is there a way to sort it out without starting the whole process again?

Discussion What do you think about polygyny? What particularly do you not like about it?

Don't hate the messenger. I'm just trying to learn. I think Pakistan is one of the most anti-polygyny Muslim majority countries I've been to, and I want to understand why that is.

I think most scholars trace it back to influence of hindiusm and their culture, which is reflected in many other ways as well.

What do you guys and girls think?

Education GMO Food

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hv you guys witnessed seedless lemons or tomatoes in your homes? Yes,they are genetically modified. Don’t get happy for this.

GMO seeds are being pushed into Pakistan's fields in the name of progress and higher yield, backed by billion-dollar global networks like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation which funds and promotes genetically modified crops across Africa and South Asia. For our farmers, this means dependency. Once you plant GMO, you can't save your seed for next year you have to buy it again, plus the specific chemical that goes with it.

The side effects are real: loss of our native seed varieties, soil that becomes addicted to chemicals, rising costs for small farmers, and health questions that have not been answered for our people. Our desi wheat, our basmati, our cotton, these seeds survived centuries in our soil. Why replace them with a lab-made seed owned by a foreign corporation?

The future of agriculture in Pakistan should be seed sovereignty, our farmers owning our seeds, not renting them every season. Organic, indigenous, and free.

Follow GMO FREE PAKISTAN because this is not just about farming, this is about our food, our health, and our independence. We are here to protect the Pakistani seed. Our goal is to create awareness, to raise voice and to run a strong campaign. The end goal is to reach farmers and educate them about this.
