The most frequently asked question in this subreddit is some variation of “I’m thinking of moving to Prince George, what is it like/which neighbourhood should I choose/is there anything to do?”
In an effort to cut down on these posts AND provide a helpful bunch of information, I’m starting this thread for tips/tricks/recommendations/warnings.
Here’s the idea: I’m going to put a few links below, as well as some topics that might be useful but I don’t personally have the answers to (such as resources for finding a place to rent).
I’m also going to start a few threads for top-level topics, such as neighbourhoods and best ofs, and people can post their responses there.
You can add your own answers/advice as top-level comments. Please try and search before commenting in order to avoid duplicates, and to make things are easy to search and organize.
About Prince George
Canada Games Plaza
The greater Prince George area has a population of about 86,600 people but, as the largest community for hundreds of kilometers in all directions, it tends to punch above its weight in many respects because you aren't driving into a nearby metro area for an evening's entertainment. It is a government, service and healthcare hub, home to a college and university, and has a diversified enough economy that it isn't wholly dependent on any one or two industries, though forestry remains a vital driver along with mining, oil and gas and energy activity in other northern communities. It is at the confluence of the Fraser and Nechako Rivers and has many outdoor recreation opportunities.
Prince George is built on the unceded territory of the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation, who are frequently partners with the city on major initiatives, including the building of the University of Northern British Columbia and hosting of the 2015 Canada Winter Games.
Like most mid-sized Canadian communities that boomed in the mid-20th century, Prince George is a fairly car-centric city. But with the arrival of more and more post-secondary students, people are able to get around without their own wheels. Here is a previous discussion about cars and transit in the city.
There are currently no official ride-hailing services operating in Prince George, but I’ll try to update when that changes.
Getting To/From
For leaving town, there are two long-distance bus options. If you are headed north, east or west it is the provincially-run BC Bus North. If you’re headed south, it’s Adventure Charters
We have an international airport with multiple daily flights to Vancouver as well as regular flights to Calgary, Edmonton, Victoria, Kelowna and multiple communities around the north
Back in the day, Prince George was a much more mill-based city than it is now, but the reputation of a certain odour… lingers. You can still smell the industrial activity in certain parts of town and under certain circumstances, but there have been dramatic improvements in industry standards in recent decades. If you’d like to learn more you can read up at the Prince George Air Quality Improvement Roundtable or jump to the official thread discussing it.

There are plenty of Prince George-centric Facebook groups. Some of the most popular include:
I'm looking to join a recreational adult tap, ballet, or gymnastics class locally. I have a background in Irish dance from when I was younger, but since there aren't adult options here, I'm looking to try something new. Has anyone taken classes offered in town and can share their experience?
I know this family and these 2 dogs. I was very saddened to hear of their circumstances. It turns out these dog’s mother, who I guess is the posters partners mother, did in fact end up dying this weekend so this is turning into a dire situation for all involved. So again, I’ve met these dogs and the people around them so I would likely be able to immediately connect anyone to the poster or someone in the family. PLEASE. I know we have a fantastic, empathetic community who rallies around problems and circumstances like this. The post is on a bunch of different Facebook pages but I’ll attach the entire thing here from the original poster. PLEASE HELP, PLEASE SHARE. ALL THE THANKS! If you ask anything on here, I’ll try to answer ASAP or I’ll immediately connect with the family to answer you!
Hey everyone! I’m 25F and live in pg. I’m hoping to find someone in the same boat as me! I, unfortunately, don’t have any friends and it’s really hard to meet new people when you’re introverted like I am. So I have ended up alone for Halloween this year. I figured I’d have the best chance at finding a buddy here! I was wanting to get dressed up in our costumes and meet at either Crush or Ignite (I have no preference) and have drinks and dance our hearts out! My costume is a Viking witch this year!
A little about me: Like I said, I’m a 25 yo woman. I am divorced and single. I’m quite introverted but I get comfortable really quickly once first meetings are out of the way. I have 2 cats who are my whole world and I practice witchcraft, I am also pagan. I have Norse heritage and am really interested is everything to do with Norse mythology and the sagas. I love getting tattoos and piercings. I also wear a TONNN of jewellery. I collect little trinkets, dead bugs and bones to put in tiny jars or just display on my shelves. I have too many crystals to counts and I have 10 times as many rocks that I’ve collected from lakes/rivers/gravel pits that I tumble myself. I’m very caring, understanding, patient, kind and I get along with almost everyone!
So please let me know if you also need someone to go clubbing with or you wouldn’t mind if I joined your group! You can reply under this or message me and we can get to know each other a little bit!🫶🤍 Thank you if you read this far, I love you.
Hey all, my husband was going to a barber named Preet at Tommy Gun’s but he apparently doesn’t work there anymore. Does anyone know Preet and if he’s working elsewhere in town now? My husband doesn’t want to see someone new 😅
Hi everyone! I’m looking for a plumbing apprenticeship opportunity in Prince George. I’ve completed my Plumbing Foundation course and am registered as a Level 1 apprentice.
I’m motivated, reliable, eager to learn, and ready to gain hands-on experience. If anyone knows of a company hiring apprentices or has any leads, I’d really appreciate it. Thank you!
Is there anywhere in PG that sells bras in the F/G/H cup range that are decent quality and don’t look like I dug them out of my great grandmothers closet?
Lost my Daisy last Friday!
We just moved to CH close to Malaspina school
We have called and walked around with flashlights all week.
She’s a very scaredy cat I’d assume she’s hiding 🙀 but I miss her so dearly I have posted on FB just posting here so maybe another pair of eye can be looking
last saturday on the 17th my sister lost her wallet that has a black cartoon cat on it with a matching cat charm. it contains both of her photo ids and her bank card.
She dropped it at some point taking the route 5 bus and the route 55 bus to and from superstore. We think it mustve been when she ran through the superstore parking lot to catch the bus.
i dont know why she only just told me this now because she needs her cards back URGENTLY so please let me know if youve seen it
I (25F) just moved to PG for work. I have a lot of friends from my home city, but since I got here, I suddenly had an epiphany that I actually have no idea how to make friends in a smaller town like PG. I'm from Vancouver, and there are always events happening where I live, so I would just constantly be at events and meet people there. But the worst is that I just realized I made all of my close friends in undergrad...
So, now I'm just here, not in school, not really affiliated with any community organizations, and I don't even know where to begin making friends.
A bit about me: I like to hike, forage, do arts and crafts, write, do any sort of live theatre (including stand-up), any form of civic engagement and open-source education, and I'm attempting to be more consistent in the gym. I am also very interested in amateur and analog tech pursuits.
I think my biggest downfall is that I am pretty introverted and shy. I'm not scared of people, but I get so entertained spending time alone that I forget to go outside and interact with people unless I have an event to go to, where I know that everyone will share a mutual interest. When I'm just out and about, I tend to mind my own business and listen to an audiobook or something.
Does anybody have any experience with the perscribed alternatives program? I would like to ask a few questions about how you got on it and if you’d recommend it. Was it an easy process what clinic did you go to and which pharmacy is the best for this.
In seeing this story, I thought about how badly the NDP has declined locally that they need to get a minister's aide from Victoria to run for them. It's been a while but they used to elect prominent cabinet ministers up here.
What if anything would it take for the NDP to become competitive in Prince George again? I don't see it happening, but I'm interested in what other people think.
I used to have them when I was younger and have been wanting to try them again, but ive been unable to find them in Save-on, Buylow or Costco and Walmart any ideas?
Nothing more inviting for a school fundraiser than an ill conceived AI poster will spelling mistakes and questionable graphics. Scissknife anyone? Come to Prince Geogge, BC to enjoy.
What’s with the overkill on parking and baggage left unattended PA’s?
Frequency of announcements is indirectly proportionate to the actual volume of visitors and passengers.
I have no clue how to come about this but I think our city could massively benefit from an indoor sports park. Think of a place where year round people off all skill levels and ages could ride their Bikes, Skateboards, Roller skates, scooters ect. It'd be a great way to be able to practice in the winter, give people something to do ( people are always complaining there's little to do here) and it'd be a great way to support potentially a local business. It's a great way to exercise and it keeps the kids out of trouble too!
Of the eight voting stations open on general election day (Blackburn Elementary, College Heights Secondary, DP Todd Secondary, Edgewood Elementary, John McInnis Centre, Prince George Conference and Civic Centre, Shash Ti Kelly Road and Vanway Elementary), Garth Frizzell was elected mayor at 5. Kyle Sampson had the most votes at Blackburn and Vanway, and Simon Yu had the most at Edgewood. You can click around on the charts in the link to play with the results, or open them in a new window here.
Just below the mayor’s chart, I have council, where again there aren’t major differences by station. Brian Skakun, Nicole Fraser, Trudy Klassen and Dan Pears were elected at all eight locations, Dan McLaren and James Steidle got in at six, Cori Ramsay in five and Bob Radloff in four.
Of the council candidates not to be elected, Bruce Wayne — who finished 12th overall — finished in the top eight at four stations, Jesi Janjua, 10th overall, would have been elected in three locations and Tim Bennet, the ninth place finisher with just 260 fewer votes than Radloff, would have been elected at two locations.
The reason Bennett had a higher overall vote count than Janjua and Wayne and yet was a top eight finisher at fewer stations is his success with voters at DP Todd and the Civic Centre, the two locations with the highest turnout. Again, you can play see the chart in the link and open it in a new window here.
Hello, I am moving to PG and wanted to ask if anyone has any recommendations for apartment rentals. I looked into Briarwood III and Guru Nanak Mehar but the reviews don't seem that good. My budget is under $1700 for a 1 bedroom.
