[Jon] Anthony Edwards erupts for 47 points despite knee discomfort. Is an early break looming?

The burst clearly isn’t quite there for Anthony Edwards. He is grimacing regularly in these early season games for the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the limp that he is walking with on occasion isn’t from his usual Atlanta swagger.

The shot? That is pure as ever.

Edwards is playing through right knee pain early in this promising Timberwolves season, much like he did at the end of last season when he gutted through it in a second-round playoff loss to San Antonio. Despite being listed as questionable for Monday night’s game in Cleveland, the second of a back-to-back, with right knee injury maintenance, Edwards erupted for 47 points in a 127-125 overtime loss to the Cavaliers, Minnesota’s first defeat of the season.

He was not cleared to play until after going through pregame warmups, and he wound up playing 41 minutes in an effort to keep the Timberwolves undefeated. He made 19 of 34 shots, including a flurry of jumpers in overtime to keep the Wolves in it.

Edwards’ right knee is hurting, but he is playing, because that’s what he does. With the Timberwolves off to a tremendous start that included three straight wins of at least 20 points, he wanted to do everything he could to keep the momentum going against one of the stronger teams in the Eastern Conference.

Edwards dealt with a hyperextended left knee in the playoffs last season and was also bothered by inflammation in his right knee. He played through it in inspiring fashion, getting around-the-clock treatment and having his right knee drained multiple times to stay available, and said in the preseason that he took most of two months off to allow both knees to heal. He said he felt great during camp and was looking to find his rhythm after not being able to work out as hard as he usually does in the summer, but he opened the season with 45 points in a win over Miami.

Questionable Sequence at end of Wolves-Cavs match.

After watching it back, the sound could be a shoe or a whistle from the crowd. Odd sequence when the Wolves players seemed to half-quit on the play. What do you guys think? Not trying to stir shit up, just seemed like it was worth looking at.

No matter what, my fiancé and I saw an amazing game tonight! Ant-Man put up 47, Wolves lost by 2 in OT on the 2nd night of a back-to-back. We are proud of this team and love them even more for their resilience! We were loud all game long! Thank you for making our Anniversary enjoyable and memorable!

Hopeful That was not a bad loss all around.

Look, I know it sucks to watch our guys lose, no matter how it happens. Let’s all take a deep breath. It’s a long season.

Lamelo had a decent game. There were moments when he looked a little stuck, but also many moments when he performed well and his defensive effort was consistent. He is so fun to watch.

Ant had 47 on almost 56% shooting. He’s our guy and any game we get to watch him play at this level is a joy. He’s also not always going to go 33% from 3.

Beringer looks better every game. His instincts are excellent, and he’s so hungry every play. He’s already a real rotation guy for us.

Rudy had probably the worst offensive game I’ve seen him play, but his defence was there like always and he grabbed 20 boards. Would love for him to shoot better from the line and grab passes easier, but that’s Rudy.

Kuminga had some rough moments, but he’s bought in defensively and picks his spots pretty well. I loved the moment when he caught harden sleeping for an easy backdoor cut.

There’s a lot of great ball to look forward to. We had this one a few times, but I’m not worried.

Wolves Back.

Edit: also yeah I wish we hit more free throws. Lol. Hope that doesn’t continue.

I enjoyed the game

Honestly, the game was fun to watch. Obviously, some of our starters had a poor game, but seeing our bench guys step up was awesome. Games like these will only help us grow and improve.
I do have one question for the high-brain basketball minds here: do you think we should try to play through LaMelo a little more? I feel like our guys could also feed off his playmaking instead of just relying on him to create everything for them. I don’t see that happening enough, and it feels like Melo gets iced out by the end of games. Obviously, they won’t playmake the same way he does, but there has to be a way to get him more involved, especially in crunch time.
Curious to hear what you guys think.

Last night Kevin Calabro referred to Lamelo as the Illustrated Man. If you’ve ever seen the movie you know it’s a little bonkers. Anyway, inspired me to put this together.

Xs and Os Wolves vs Cavs G4 Thoughts

Thoughts:

Liked how we started the game - had great defense, ball was moving around, everybody on the team was attacking the basket and we had good pace. The back to back wore on us throughout the game, we started playing slower and with less defensive focus and speed. Started settling for jump shots, not moving on offense and dribbling air out of the ball a bit. Mobley had some huge threes and finished 4/5 (30% shooter last year). They’re a good team with two really good guards.

We HAVE to shoot better from the FT line and take better care of the ball. We’re shooting 60.7% from the line this year, about 10% worse than the second worse team. Our turnover % is 16.8%, bottom half of the league.

Ant had great intensity and tried to set the tone for us. He had incredible shot making and hard to argue with his +10 rating (we lost the 12 minutes he sat by 15 points), but I thought the ball got a little sticky for him and it was hard for other guys to find a rhythm.

Jaden specifically had a mismatch on him the whole game (either Mitchell or Harden) and we did not abuse that enough. It’s not only good offense but wears them out so they won’t be as fresh offensively, they were able to just sit around and rest defensively a lot. Finch needs to make this a point of emphasis in these matchups.

Rudy was terrible offensively. Couldn’t catch anything, couldn’t finish. The second three is maybe passable because of shot clock but why are you ever taking an early shot clock three, it’s the equivalent of one of our guys defensively just standing still for a possession and Rudy would rightfully be pissed if that happened. His rebounding was excellent.

Speaking of big man finishing - great Joan game. Has soft hands and surprising touch around the rim. He caught a bullet of an alley oop pass. Defensively he’s getting more solid but is still too aggressive on help and searching for blocks, he’s getting closer to the right balance. Rebounded well.

Couple Lamelo turnovers weren’t his fault but he was careless on a couple too. Didn’t love the three point settles he got to at the end. We have so much talent offensively we can’t become a give the ball to ant and sit around and watch team the last five minutes of games, we need to be more dynamic. This is our first clutch game together (and second end of back to back) so we’ll work through it eventually. There’s times for Ant iso it’s not a bad play obviously but needs to be balanced with other actions.

Thought Ayo was good again. Similar to Lamelo had two bad turnovers but his attack the rim mentality was important for us this game. He (and Jaden and Kuminga a couple times) got the wrong end of some calls but that happens. TSJ was good again too. Not as dependable defensively but I liked what he brought on the offensive end and his toggling of moving the ball and attacking the rim.

Liked Kuminga’s defense again. It was clear his shot wasn’t falling this game so liked how he adapted and didn’t force that part too much. Played his role well.

I like how Finch is bringing Bones in every once in a while to inject a little pace and energy when we need it. Overall not too upset about this loss, had it in our grasp and think we pull this out if we weren’t on tail end of home to road back to back.

We made allot of mistakes. But if can improve just by 20% we would be breaking NBA records and be one of the greatest NBA teams of all time. Us being bad is still the top of the League and I dont care what anyone says. We will win the chip this year.

Our playing bad = the top NBA teams playing at their best.
