The AdviceFlairBot is back!

Thanks to a kind developer, we now have a new bot to replace the broken one.

As a reminder: OP should use the word "helped!" in their response to someone who has given them quality advice. This awards the advisor one point to recognize their assistance.

Update: The trigger word has changed to "Helped!". The exclamation point was added to reduce false positives.

New: Gratitude phrases have been added so the bot will respond to words like "Thank you", "That helped" , "Appreciate it" and many more.

Help with spam, use the report button.

If you received this as a reply you've responded to a likely spam bot or karma farming post and probably didn't offer advice.

Before writing to the mod team read everything below. Review your comment history and consider what you did to receive this as a link. If you write us without indicating you read the below you will be banned and muted.

Participation in bot-generated content can lead to your account being flagged as a sockpuppet account used for astroturfing (suspicion of coordinated manipulation) and result in a permanent ban which may extend across Reddit.

Thanks to everyone making this 3M+ community one of the best on Reddit!

With the increase in AI slop, sold accounts and trolls we need your help to maintain the quality as much as possible.

When you see a post that is obviously spam, asking for money, inappropriate or generally is provocative

- report it

- down vote it

- don't comment on it! Seriously. Stop. If you aren't giving advice you're breaking the subreddit rules.

Commenting on a post gives the algorithms feedback and makes the post appear in more feeds leading to more comments.

If you're literally writing "spam" "fake" "what?" etc you should be reporting it instead because it's also against the rules to disbelieve the OP. If you don't believe it's real, report it.

If a comment is inappropriate

- report it

- down vote

Yet if you report a lot of posts only because you disagree with it (and it's otherwise allowed) we will end up removing your reporting privileges (there's a mute button for over reporting that let's you continue participating but ignores future reporting).

Lastly this is not a comedy or debate club.

Jokes aren't advice and can quickly lead to bans. Especially if the poster is underage, the topic is sensitive etc.

If you don't agree with a comment a quick comment framing a point a commentor may have missed is acceptable. However you will get banned if you're going back and forth with a troll multiple times. Often it's the last comment being reported and to wade through who was the main instigator takes a lot longer than you simply reporting the problem comment.

If you're disagreeing with a comment, yet have no advice yourself then you are not helping. If you disagree with a comment the best thing you can do is respond directly to the OP with your own opinion.

Thanks for your help!

Advice Received Nudes of my gf going viral and we can’t wipe them all.

3.0k Upvotes

Long story short my gf’s iCloud got hacked by someone and they got nudes of her boobs with her face in them and posted them online. I think it was either someone she knows or a phone repair store person stole them because she had gotten her phone fixed some time before. Someone sent the pictures to me and they’ve already been viral for months on 100s of sites. Is there anything we can do at this point?

Advice Received my sister secretly declined my dream college acceptance from my email and i just found out

i am literally crying in my car right now and i don't even know what to do my life feels completely over.
i got accepted into my absolute dream college a few weeks ago. it is out of state and i have been working my butt off all through high school to get into this specific program. my older sister who is 21 goes to a local community college and she has always been really bitter and weird about me moving away, yesterday i logged into my college portal to check on my housing application and it said that my admission status was withdrawn. i literally started panicking and called the admissions office. the lady on the phone told me that they received a formal email from my account last week stating that i was declining the offer because i chose a different school.

i knew for a fact i didn't send that. then i remembered that my sister knows my laptop password because we share it sometimes. i went into my sent emails and looked at the trash folder. there it was. she literally logged into my email, sent the refusal, and then deleted the sent message and the acceptance emails so i wouldn't see the notifications.

when i confronted her she didn't even deny it. she just laughed and said she did me a favor because moving out of state is stupid and our family needs to stick together. my parents are completely useless and told me that she was just acting out of love because she is going to miss me and that i should just apply to the local school instead.

the admissions office said the class is full now and there is a massive waitlist so they can't just put me back in. i feel like my own family just ruined my entire future. how do i fix this? can i get her arrested for hacking my email or something?

My paternal grandparents made contact with me for the first time since my dad's funeral a few weeks ago but it feels like they just want to punish me for choosing to live with my maternal grandparents over my half siblings and their mom

My (15M) mom died when I was 5 and my dad died when I was 8. My dad was remarried and had two more kids when he died. When my dad died my maternal grandparents and my dad's wife argued over where I would live. It was a shitshow. The day after dad died a social worker and the police were at my dad's house because my dad's wife called them on my grandparents for wanting to take me. I wanted to go with my grandparents and the social worker said it was the best temporary solution until custody was resolved. I was interviewed a few times and I always said I wanted to live with my grandparents. There were more questions asked than that but whenever it came down to what I wanted or who I felt the most secure with my grandparents were the answer.

My paternal grandparents were on my dad's wife's side. My dad's funeral was the last time we had any contact for years. They were disappointed in me and didn't agree with me living with my maternal grandparents.

But a few weeks ago they started to make contact with me again. My 16th birthday is coming up really soon and they mentioned that a lot at first and I thought maybe it was why they wanted to be in my life again. But after talking to them a few times they started to mention my dad's wife and my half siblings. They told me I should have been making the effort to be in their lives now that I'm older and I should reach out and say I want to live with them again and when I told them I didn't want to they started talking to me like I was 5 and throwing a tantrum. They lectured me about family and they lectured me about making good decisions. They told me that my dad would have been heartbroken to know I abandoned the family he left me with as soon as his spirit left his body. They said he left me with a mom and siblings and I threw them away for people who disrespected her from the beginning and made her feel like she could never be my mom. They told me that my grandparents had fought with my dad and his wife for encouraging me to call his wife mom, which I never did. And that they minimized her role in my life. They asked what I thought of that and I said they were right.

Now when we call it's just lecture after lecture and they insult my grandparents. My paternal grandparents said my grandparents stole my chance to have a normal family and they stole my chance to have a mom and siblings. They were like it's sad your mom died when you were 5 but your dad found you a wonderful new mom and gave you siblings and "those people" stole you away. They said they would have expected me to be angry about it by now and they would have expected me to be fixing my mistakes. I told them it wasn't a mistake and I had no regrets. So more lectures followed.

My grandparents talked to them on the phone and there was a fight. We talked about it and my grandparents told me they would not make the decision for me but to know it's okay to go back to not speaking to them. I feel like it might be for the best. But I wanted to ask for some advice because I was really happy to hear from my paternal grandparents again but now I'm less happy and it feels like the whole point of their calls is to punish me for making the choice they didn't like.

Advice Received My sister’s boyfriend made a move on me while drunk. They move in together next week. Do I tell her?

At a family dinner last weekend, my sister's boyfriend got wasted, cornered me alone and straight up asked me to hook up in his car. I walked away immediately, and later he texted me trying to brush it off as a bad drunken joke. They just signed a one-year lease and are literally moving in together next week. If I tell her now with no solid proof, I might look like a liar ruining her life, but letting her sign up for this asshole feels ten times worse.

Advice Received My Pre-Teen is obsessed with the lead singer of a band and I fear it's getting out of hand.

• Upvotes

Hi all. My daughter is 12 and we live in the UK. She is on the waiting list for CBT therapy in relation to social anxiety and is on the waiting list for an autism assessment. This is all for info and context in the sense that we are trying to address areas already.

My daughter is a good kid, she's bright, doesn't get into trouble and is doing well in school, my concern lies in her obsession with the lead singer of a band.

She has thousands of photos on her phone of him, all appropriate ones, and will send them to me from time to time saying "look how cute my husband is" or "isn't he so cute". This all started at the beginning of the year as what appeared to be a harmless teen crush on a band member, as we've all had at one point in our lives, and has snowballed to what it is now.

My daughter knows everything about this man and talks about him a lot, she owns all of his music, both on vinyl and CD, which me and dad encouraged as music is a massive outlet for her and we were happy she'd connected with a genre of music we always grew up loving.

Now the reason I have come to reddit is because I just don't know what to do, she spends all of her spare time holed up in her bedroom, not wanting to do anything, she has lost interest in most things and will barely leave the house unless it's for school. She came to me tonight crying, I was worried as she can be quite guarded with her emotions, although will talk to me about any problems she may have, so to see her openly crying was a shock for me. She told me, after some coaxing, that she is so upset because of the singers wife, not because she's done anything, but simply because she exists.

I have no idea how to navigate this, I am at a loss of how to help her with these emotions, feelings and the obsession.

Extra info in case it comes up in comments, she has a smartphone, yes. She does not have access to social media, she has YouTube and Whatsapp, there are no groupchats where there may be bullying occuring, she has one best friend who she video calls with a lot and who comes over to the house frequently. She has time limits on the phone and it sits on my dresser from 9pm so she can wind down without it.

Gave partner an ultimatum

My boyfriend of 6 months (44M) feels as if I (34F) am giving him an ultimatum by setting a boundary. I'll try to keep this as short and to the point as possible.

When we met, we clicked so well. He's been the dream partner when everything's good. But when we have arguments, usually caused by misunderstandings or miscommunications, he has said some pretty harsh things. Some examples being "you don't give a sh** about me" or calling me a liar, cheater, etc when I've been completely loyal.

After an argument two nights ago, I said "I love you very much, and I want this to work, but accusations and hurtful words will not be tolerated. If it continues, I may have to reconsider. This boundary is simply for my mental health." This makes him feel like my love for him is conditional. That's not true; in my opinion, true love isn't conditional, but that doesn't mean unconditional tolerance. Maybe the way I worded it gave mixed signals. Sometimes I word things poorly. What should I say/do if this conversation comes up again? Should I rephrase what I originally said?

My niece (17) lives with me now and my brother wants to patch up their relationship but I don't feel like I should push her to?

• Upvotes

My niece is from my brother's first marriage. Her mom died when she was 8. My brother remarried when she was 10. He has three children with his second wife. My niece's mom had a collection of stuffed animals that she gave to my niece before she died. My niece treasured them and my brother had this bright idea that my niece had to give each of her half siblings one of the stuffed animals. My niece refused and after a few years of back and forth he gave them to the other kids anyway and within three months those stuffed animals were no longer in good condition.

My niece found out and every resentment she had about her dad remarrying and the existence of her half siblings was multiplied by a thousand. She told her dad she wished her half siblings were never born and she didn't even love them or consider them siblings and she told him she wished he had died instead of her mom because he wasn't good for anything and he betrayed her mom and her. She was screaming for hours according to him and that's why he asked if she could stay with me for a weekend. This was four months ago.

When it was agreed she would stay longer term I got her therapy. She was glad to have therapy. But she has said time and time again she is done with her dad and wants nothing to do with her half siblings.

My brother wants to work on reconciling and he asked me to help him with that. But I don't think I should push the issue. If I do I will alienate her from me and I'm the only family she's close to. Her mom was an only child and her grandparents are both deceased too.

But I was talking to a friend who said I should really encourage the reconciliation because she shouldn't hate her dad this much or hate her siblings for existing and to think about how sad it would be if she hates them forever for something they did as children.

I truly would like advice. I will be speaking to her therapist too. But my gut is telling me not to push it.

My(F18) younger brother( M13) is blackmailing me. What should I do?

So I’m 18F and I really need some advice

My parents are extremely strict when it comes to me going out, having friends or dating. I have basically never been allowed to have a normal social life. Even when I was little, I wasn’t allowed to go to birthday parties, hang out with female friends, go shopping by myself etc. I stopped hanging out with friends when I was around 6-7 because I already knew I wouldn’t be allowed.

Later I moved to a residential school and got a little more freedom, but boys were completely out of the question because my parents made sure I went to a very strict school. I was also put into a girls' college.

My younger brother (13M) and I were never that close but i understand him. The thing is, the rules for him have always been completely different. He is allowed to go out and play with his friends almost everyday. My parents do care about where he goes, but he doesn't have to hide normal things from them. He can just tell them and go.

Recently I met a guy and started dating him. For the first time I feel like I'm actually getting to experience a normal life. I sometimes sneak out to meet him or my female friends for around 4-5 hours.

I’m not constantly out. I come back by 6.

During my holidays I had been going out quite often and my brother knew about it. He didn't have any problem with it at that time.

But recently he has suddenly started using it against me.

He says that a girl shouldn't be going out without her parents knowing. He keeps saying that " no other females don't go out like this" and , I'm supposed to only go out when my parents agree.

He also thinks I'm spoiled just because I want to have some freedom and live a normal life.

Now he has started threatening to tell my parents about all the times I've gone out. He says he won't tell them if I tell him exactly where I go, who I'm with, and give him access to my phone.

He wants to see my personal gallery. He also wants access to my chats and Instagram.

If I refuse, he threatens to tell my parents everything.

He has done this kind of thing before too. He used to blackmail me into giving him my phone so he could play games etc. But now it has become much more serious because he knows that my parents finding out about me going out could cause a huge problem for me.

The worst part is that he genuinely thinks he has the right to control what I do. He has even said that when I eventually move away for college, he will still keep track of what I'm doing and who I'm going out with.

I know I'm 18 and technically an adult. I know I'm allowed to have friends, go out, date someone and have private conversations without my 13 year old brother checking my phone.

But because of how strict my parents are, I feel completely trapped. He knows exactly what my weak point is and is using it against me.

I don't want to give him access to my personal life just to stop him from telling my parents. At the same time, I don't know what will happen if he actually does tell them.

I genuinely need advice on how to deal with this. Is there any way I can handle this without making things worse?

What would you do in my situation?

My boyfriend has been lying about girl best friend

I (26F) caught my boyfriend lying about having feelings for his girl best friend.

At the start of our relationship, I thought it was weird that everyone was confused when we got together and everyone thought my boyfriend would end up with his girl best friend. I didn’t think much of it at first until she told him that she was concerned about him cutting her off because of me. I then started questioning why everyone thought he would end up with her and apparently (after refusing to tell me multiple times) it was because he told everyone that whenever she touched him or acted flirtatious towards him that he fantasized about being in a relationship with her, all while she had a boyfriend. He additionally bought her flowers when she was in a heated fight with her boyfriend at the time, and he told me he didn’t know why or what possessed him to do that. While in our relationship, I asked him to establish boundaries with her, which he agreed to but then broke his promise and didn’t tell me. I then asked him if he ever had feelings for her and he told me no and that at the time he was fantasizing about being with her, he was just lonely. We continue to have more fights about this until I had enough of it and was about to break up with him since I didn’t want to put up with getting in between whatever they have together and all these lies. I guess he was afraid of losing me so he cut her off. A couple of weeks ago, his friend sent me text messages between him and my boyfriend from over a year ago, where my boyfriend says he’s in love with his girl best friend. I haven’t told him about the texts I saw. She’s out of the picture now, but I can’t help but still feel uneasy.

How to tell parents I am moving out and found an appartement?

• Upvotes

For context, I am now 32 and my parents do not support my decision to move out at all. They say renting is a waste of money, but they do not understand that houses are currently very expensive and that I simply cannot afford one, especially if I were to move into it alone.

Advice Received How do I cope with injuring a dog at work

I’m a seasoned dog groomer and unfortunately this job comes with risks not just to yourself but to innocent little angels.

I have a 6 year grooming background i am in no way a beginner just for context. A couple days ago i was grooming a regular and he shook his head and I snipped his ear on accident (OFCOURSE). His ear bled a lot and the cut was about 4mm deep. I rushed him to the vet immediately it ended up in a couple stitches and pain meds. I brought him home and sobbed for 2 days straight.

I am incredibly blessed his owners are the most understanding and kind people but I can’t even begin to approach getting over this. I’ve had a few work days since then and I know this will get better over time but it’s caused this horrendous deep guilty feeling I can’t get rid of.

I’d like to add I’m not careless or unsafe I’m very professional and protective of my work. I have put my heart and soul into hundreds of dogs throughout the years and this freak accident I know logically doesn’t reflect my skill but I feel sick thinking about the fact I hurt someone’s baby..

How do I begin to cope with this?

27/F, am I too old for a college party I was invited to?

• Upvotes

Context I’m back in college. I smoke cigarettes and joints between my Monday/Wednesday class with 2 friends I’ve made in class (20/M) (21/F). I got invited to a college party and I’m so conflicted about going. My friends outside of class range in age from 20 in school to 38 outside of school.

Only 20/M knows how old I actually am. Most think of my friends at school think I’m max like 25.

What would you do in my situation?

Advice Received How to live in an aI world when you hate aI

Every day it seems more and more people give in to AI which is just what the AI companies wanted. Many of us still hate it and don't want to be a part of it, but are being pushed into it in many ways.

How do you live in a world that simply isn't the world you knew anymore, where its values are opposite of your own? Everything in life that makes me happy is being devalued and deprioritized more and more by AI. Am I supposed to just give up on all of it?

Mom invades my medical privacy

I am a 19 year old female. I have just started seeing my newest physician. My mom registered me with the hospital under her phone number and email.

She also has access to my MyChart account through her own. I want my information to be private. She saw I was overdue for a chlamydia screening and confronted me saying I was hiding something from her. I managed to talk my way out of it. She's under the impression that I'm not sexually active.

My mom is not someone I can talk to in regards to mental health, sex, or anything personal really. It's uncomfortable for both of us and normally ends in me feeling belittled by my mother. I have to lie to her and tell her what she wants to hear.

She attends all of my appointments with me and closely listens to me when I talk to the front desk regarding phone number, address, etc. I was lucky she didn't force her way back into the room with the doctor.

I really just don't know what to do. I could call the hospital and change my contact information but she would find out. She checks my MyChart all the time to see what I'm "hiding".

I'm new to adulthood and have no clue how these things work. Can I get ownership of my medical history even while still on my parents health insurance? Any advice helps. I need it.

Should i go on a third date…

• Upvotes

I just had a second date with someone, who is super sweet and nice. Generally we have great conversation and he seems like a balanced person, good education, self aware and smart. However, there were some red flags that I am struggling to grapple with and making me re think whether or not to keep seeing - for example he told me he is trying to stop drinking by “microdosing” GHB recreationally - and he does that by buying some sort of plastic solvent that he gets specially shipped from Poland that then metabolises into GHB into the bloodstream... ??? I have never heard this ever before and find it really weird… and he also told me a few stories about his friends that seems a bit dodgey like one of his friends microdoses ketamine and makes documentaries about drugs, and then another have been barred from practising as a lawyer due to conduct issues … on the one hand I appreciate him being honest and he doesn’t seem like a person who is unbalanced but this all seems like a lot, and so out of my lifestyle, I am not sure if i wanna get into his world. Atm it is quite casual but I’m slightly concerned. What should i do - is this a huge red flag???

Disagreement with partner about a quite important topic

So me and my partner are normally very open with eachother about slightly uncomfortable topics, but we got into a very large disagreement the other night because he thinks consent is something you automatically agree to when you begin a relationship. While I think that consent for sexual relations isn’t given automatically just because you’re in a relationship. Is this just a subjective opinion or something deeper?

Advice Received Boyfriend says he wishes I had a better body

Every time we watch a tv with women who are built like models or scenes with strippers my boyfriend says “God look at that ass. I look at that then I look and see you. Why can’t you be attractive” and it really hurts my feelings. This has been a continuous thing for a while now and it’s really starting to affect my mental health. I’m planning on breaking up with him soon, but I don’t know how to make myself feel better about myself now that he’s knocked my confidence down so much. It like no matter what I do I’m not good enough and he always finds something wrong with me, whether it’s that I have a few eyebrow hairs, have razor burn on my skin, or that I miss a few hairs when I shave.

How can I get my mom to let me go trick or treating with my group of friends?

• Upvotes

I’m 16 F and and only child and I want to go trick or treating with my friends (4 of them, all my age, all girls).

but my problem is is the neighborhood my friends live is 20-30 minutes away and my mom doesnt trust me all the way over there. But me and all my friends are going to be dressing scary and covering almost all skin for our costumes, and we’re going to be trick or treating in a rich neighborhood that isnt a bad neighborhood with high visibility (since I have a strict mom, ive done all the research), and i want to try giving her reasons to let me go.

i havent given her a reason to believe I’m dumb or ill do dumb things, and my friends arent the type of people to smoke or do substances. my mom knows them and I want to know how I can get her to trust me going out with them for hallwoeen. It’s just how far my friends’ neighborhood is that she says no.

if anyone has any advice on how to have her gain trust ill be safe, ill gladly appreciate it

We’re going to lose our home…….

Back in May my husband’s ex-wife took my husband to court to attempt to get full custody (she didn’t win) and in the same month my husband lost his job. We ended up having to pay over $7,000 in legal fees in the same month he very unexpectedly lost his job. He’s been applying for 10+ jobs a day and has gone on several interviews but still has not gotten a job. I work full time as an RN making $50/hr but because we were relying on both of our income we are falling more and more behind on bills. We’ve started Sparking and Door-dashing in an attempt to stay afloat but it’s just not working. We’ve even sold almost everything of value. Idk what else we can possibly do. We have a blended family so me leaving to travel nurse isn’t an option. I make too much money to qualify for any assistance. We need both of our vehicles because of where we live (I commute an hour to work) and our kids schedules. I just don’t know what else we can possibly do……

I spent years struggling with a mystery illness. I finally have a diagnosis, but I feel like its ruined my life

• Upvotes

I (26f) got confirmation from my doctor yesterday that I have an autoimmune disease, and based off of my test results and symptom history, have likely had it since I was about 12. Its fortunately very treatable after some making some permanent lifestyle changes and my doctor says I'll likely make a full recovery (there is a chance of me having permanent damage given how long I've been living with this and I'm due to have more testing to figure this out, but so far my doctor thinks I'll heal up fine after several months to a year).

While I'm relieved to finally have answers, I'm also feeling so bitter and so angry. I've been struggling with symptoms of this since I was a kid, and looking back, the impact they've had on my life is huge. I remember being 12 years old and losing friends because I couldn't keep up with them from how fatigued I was and how much my joints hurt. I began struggling to keep up in school despite being a "smart" kid because I couldn't get myself to concentrate. I struggled with severe anxiety and depression (both are symptoms) all the way through high school. I missed basically every formative experience because of this, even the mundane ones. I didn't go off to college because I didn't think I'd be able to keep up. This is possibly TMI, but I've literally never dated or had sex because this has nuked my sex drive and caused me pelvic pain. I've struggled with my weight, my skin, my energy levels, my mood, my ability to focus, basically everything, and it was always brushed off as me being lazy, me not trying hard enough, me being crazy, and there just being something wrong with me as a person.

Even a few years ago when my symptoms became completely debilitating and I could no longer work, drive, stand up for long, was having severe abdominal pain, rapid weight loss, and generally looked a felt like death, I was still told it was nothing, probably "just anxiety", told to try birth control, told to try meditating, and just left to feel like I was crazy, and eventually I started thinking I was. I spent years out of work, living with my parents, and everyone around me treating me like a failure and a burden to my family while I sat there feeling horrible and watching my 20s blow by me. My family is clearly disappointed and frustrated with me. At one point my mom asked me flat out where they went wrong with me. I gave up on trying to get a diagnosis after being brushed off so many times until a couple of weeks ago I saw something online talking about different autoimmune diseases. One sounded a lot like what I was dealing with. I did more research and found that many people present atypically which leads to delayed diagnosis. I ordered my own blood test, got a positive result brought it to my doctor, they ran more tests, and now here I am.

My head's been spinning since I got the call. I'm grateful to have answers and unbelievably grateful to have a chance to not bee in pain, but I also can't help but feel that it's already ruined my life. I've missed literally my entire youth. I've spent basically my whole life in pain and missing out on everything. I'm so unbelievably far behind my peers in basically every way and I doubt I'll ever realistically catch up. It has ruined my relationship with my family as everyone just thinks I'm this lazy loser who has taken advantage of them and failed to launch. I have no clue how to tell my family, and while I know I'm not old, i feel like this has done too much damage to my life and i don't know what to do.

Should I tell my boss I am bipolar?

In short, I (34)F work for a large company and have a supervisor. Some months I’m on top at work and can learn quickly etc. not manic just “normal”. Other times I can hardly bring myself to be there never mind remember what she’s saying. Recently (6months ago) I was put on a medication that works great for my highs and lows, but I cannot remember anything for the life of me. My job requires quick thinking and recall. I have to write it down and even need to look back when our conversation was 5 min ago. She’s getting sick of me I can tell and it’s stressing me out further… which tends to make me defensive and the dynamic has suffered a little because of it. Mind you, it took since I was 19 to find a combination of medicine that has worked, and I finally feel like my best self so changing that is not an option.

My question is…

Should I somehow tell her why I can’t retain information off the top of my head anymore and get confused more often?

I just don’t want to come off as careless or just down right stupid now that I can’t perform to her standards.

Help.

Also, yes, it’s my first time posting and idk what I’m doing.
