Hey good people of the internet, I am looking for some advice on how to control my nerves because I easily get all shaky when in any situation when I am doing something in front of people. Be it anything. A small task like talking back in a situation when I need to, and I know I am not doing anything wrong and just talking but if I know people are watching and there’s a chance to mess up I’ll start shaking. My face starts feeling hot, environment becomes hot and tense, and time movies slow. I also start feeling shortness of breath, and a strong urge to just escape the environment. This has been a problem for me for years now.
Feel free to skip any part of this post and read whatever you want to. I am dividing it by paragraphs in sections to give a better picture, because I am serious about getting help for this.
Please help with some good advice. I really want to improve.
Let me tell you a recent example, today’s example:
I was at my shop. I don’t sit all times there. It’s my parents shop, I just go there to help, so I was alone today. A customer comes and gives me 5 product to gift wrap. It’s an easy task which I have done several times before, and something I do better than my parents sometimes because for me it’s really easy, doesn’t require much skill. So, this customer is younger girl, and I don’t feel any emotion towards her. I am mentioning this because my reaction changes based on who is watching me. For first 2 items I pack this girl leaves the shop to do something else, so everything is pretty smooth at that time, and I don’t even think about anything related to nervousness. Now after 2 items are done, she comes back with her brother and sits in front watching me pack the items, and something just happens inside me. Both of them are watching me, and all of sudden I am thinking why am I starting to lose control. Why my hands are starting to shake all of a sudden? I try to keep calm, and think myself it’s not a big deal. I have done this several times, and just focus on my breathing, but as time pass I lose my control more and more. I am trying my best to not look scared, or show that I am shaking by making fast movements. I also give them some tasks so they can look away from me. Like I give them name slips and tell them to place it on their items wherever they want. Then I give them decorating flowers, and tell them to make it and place it, while I do that on other items. I basically ask my customers to do the job that I was supposed to do, so I can hide my nervousness. Those 1-2 minutes felt really long, and while I was trying my best to control my breathing I couldn’t. I tried my best to just focus on what I was supposed to. Once I almost messed up by leaving very little wrapping on one side, and as soon as I catch this fact I get more nervous. I charged them less because I made them work, and when they left I just sat on my chair collecting myself. I had somehow made it work, but I was almost caught shaking. I was on the edge of giving up, and telling them that I can’t do it. It’s good thing I gave them something to do, because I was about to tell them I am not feeling well and I just can’t do it.
Some other examples where I can’t control my shaking:
When I stopped playing a game because I was shaking in front of a friend:
So few years ago my friend was having trouble beating a boss or fight in batman arkham asylum. When I went to his home for a regular friendly visit, which was almost daily during that time, he asked me to finish the fight for him. He was a new gamer, and I have a good experience with games, so I sat on his computer and started playing, and I played bit too well, like I always do when I am alone. I was nicely commenting on what I was doing, and what he was supposed to do while doing everything flawlessly, and during this time I suddenly realised that I am playing flawlessly, and that’s when everything started falling apart. My hands started shaking on the keyboard. While the game was too easy for me, my new objective was to keep my hands from shaking and it took just about 10 seconds, and I left the fight at like 90% or something and told him that that’s how you do it and I will not do it because I want him to do it himself. Then I stood up and went to the bathroom wondering what the hell had happened to me there.
Shaking when asking normal customer questions at a service center:
So this was just a year ago, I went to a service center to get my motherboard replaced but the girl sitting there denied it for some reason, and boom, shaking starts again. Because I am standing in front of like 8-9 people and asking some basic questions like why? What can I do? Questions like these. I called the company’s customer support, and I had to talk on speaker because when I tried to keep the phone close to my ears my hands were shaking, so to hide it I sat down, turned on the speaker, and kept my phone on the bag that was on my lap. Thankfully my legs were not because that day shaking wasn’t so intense. I talked to them, and then I had to sign on a document there. I did it as fast as I could because as my hands were shaking I did not want to show it to them.
Now some incidents where I have controlled or managed to be at peace with my shaking:
At workplace when a person was shouting on me:
One day a lady came to my office and started shouting, really loud, in fact I could hear her shouting when she was coming and hadn’t even reached my floor. She asked me by my name, and started shouting for some mistake she thought I had made. I was with like 5-6 people who were my friends and coworkers, so I felt safe in that environment. I asked her what was up, and explained that it’s just some miscommunication and that the message she had received from someone else was wrong. We had to prove it to her by calling some seniors and assuring her that no mistake had been made. During this time, this lady was staring me really badly, with raging eyes. To just mess with her I wasn’t breaking my eye contact as well, and was smiling. I had some shakiness and hotness come over my face, but it wasn’t intense because I was with friends who could take my back. Seniors were at my side as well, and it was truly a miscommunication. It’s a helpful insight for me that I can handle myself when I am surrounded by people who I can rely on, in case things go bad.
Shaking doesn’t matter to me when I am playing sports:
I play cricket, and regularly find myself in the situation where I need to be the one to perform, and this puts me at pressure. I start shaking, and things get hot whether I am bowling or batting. I have been in really tight situations a lot of times, and for a long time I used to choke. I used to play wrong shots with my bat, or just don’t play as aggressively I should have. But as time passed I started seeing that other players start shaking as well, so I thought it’s alright if I get nervous, and I just accepted the fact that I start shaking in those situations. Now that didn’t stop me from getting nervous, but the fact that no one can see me shaking while playing cricket really helps. I can jump around whenever I want. Even when I am on batting stance I can move my body, so nobody ever knows how scared I am while standing there. Accepting the fact that I shake, and I have phrased it to “I get excited in tough situations” from “I get scared”. It has helped, because it’s like my feature now. I get excited to know that I can win from this. Ever since that happened I started to just let myself be while shaking. I am shaking, and that’s alright. I can’t stop it, but no one is able to see it. I use my brain to look at the field, predict the bowler, and play my shots. I have managed to play some pretty good knocks since I did it. I don’t always manage to make the comeback, sometimes I get out and it kinda stirs me up, makes my face all hot for a few minutes when I miss the opportunity, but I just accept that it’s part of the game. I tried my best, and I can’t win everyday. I try to look for the mistakes I made, and what I could have done differently, and then don’t dwell on it like I used to. Sometimes I have made some amazing comeback, and that feels really good. It feels really good to observe how I am feeling during those times. Shaking, feeling hot, and with last shot that wins the match a strong sensation comes in my body that just tells me it’s all over and we’ve won. My body comes back to normal.
When I went for my licence test:
So when I went for my bike licence test I had practiced so many times that it was natural for me to pass. It was an instict by that point. My mind actually went blank when my time came and I was driving, but even without thinking I did everything perfectly, and passed the test. Doing the same turns hundreds of time had helped me build an instict for it, so while I completely blanked out I still managed to come out better.
So that’s it. I tried my best to write how it makes me feel. I could write other examples as well, but I think it's all same. I really wanna be able to not get all shaky whenever I do something in front of someone. I want to be able to keep my head clear, don’t lose my breathing, and just do whatever I am doing normally. Any advice will be appreciated.
