We understand that there's a lot going on with geometry dash level called "Greif" recently, however we are not a game sub! Please can everyone stop posting about in a supportive thread, we are a safe space for people processing real loss, not a place for shit posting about a video game, we don't want to ban you but we might have to, we appreciate your understanding.

Message from the Moderators We’re Looking for New Moderators to Join Our Team

Our grief support community has grown into a very large and active space, and we’re looking for a few caring, dependable people to join our moderation team.

Moderating a grief support community is more than removing posts or enforcing rules. It means helping maintain a safe, compassionate space for people who may be experiencing some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Our mod team is currently stretched thin, and we could really use some additional support.

What we’re looking for

We’re hoping to find people who:
Are compassionate, patient, respectful, and comfortable interacting with people who are grieving.

Have enough time and availability to actively participate in moderation and help keep up with the needs of a large community.

Can approach difficult or emotionally charged situations calmly and thoughtfully.

Are comfortable enforcing community rules consistently while still treating people with empathy.

Understand the importance of maintaining boundaries and recognizing that moderators are not therapists or crisis counselors.

Have a genuine interest in helping make this community a supportive and welcoming place.

Experience that would be especially valuable
While professional experience is not required, we would particularly welcome applicants with backgrounds in:
End-of-life or hospice care

Grief counseling or grief therapy

Bereavement support

Social work

Palliative care

Mental health or counseling

Other professional or volunteer experience supporting people through loss

Personal experience with grief can also provide valuable perspective, although it is not a requirement.

What we need from our moderators

This role requires a meaningful time commitment. We’re looking for people who can regularly check the subreddit, respond to reports and modmail, help address rule violations, and be present enough to share the workload with the rest of the team.

You don't need to be available 24/7 — but we do need people who can consistently contribute rather than simply being listed as a moderator.

please familiarize yourself with the group rules before applying.

If you’re someone who cares deeply about helping people navigate grief and think you could contribute your time, compassion, and perspective to this community, we’d love to hear from you.
Please reach out to the mod team via modmail with a little information about yourself, your experience with grief support (professional or personal), and your availability or post a comment to this post. Please ensure your reddit history is available to us for viewing.

Thank you to everyone who has helped make this place a welcoming community and a huge thank you to our current moderators zooline and whabbit who have put endless time, resources and energy into this space. They have kept things going for a long time and this group would not be what it is without them

Multiple Losses My last texts to both of my parents.

Both messages they never saw.

My mom had been slowly losing herself due to tumors in her brain and receiving that text was when I knew her time was coming up. She passed almost exactly a month later. Every day I wish I had been there when she passed. She was so angry about being in the nursing home but I didn't have the time or the funds to take care of her myself. My younger sister still needed to be taken care of, I needed to work more to cover bills, chores had to be done. Visiting her hurt. She couldn't talk much and what she didn't manage to get out was incoherent. I wish I knew what she was trying to say. There was one night in the hospital, the last trip before my brother decided she needed a nursing home, that I'll never forget. It was the first and last time we were all together in the same room since our dad passed, she smiled and laughed with us, which she hadn't done in a long time. Despite how bittersweet the memory is, I'll look on it very fondly.

My dad had been in and out of the hospital nearly my entire life, it was never a surprise when he went in and he was usually out within a day or two, but something felt different this time. I visited him in the hospital that night, something I didn't do much, and texted him saying I love him, something I didn't say much. He fell asleep and I decided it was time to go, and waited for the call to pick him up when he got discharged. Instead, got a call from my brother at 11 pm saying to wake everyone up and go to the hospital. I don't know what had changed to make this one feel so different but I think something in me just knew. Saw the signs, saw him deteriorating and trying to hide it, how he couldn't hold himself up as well as he used to, how he lost his appetite. Maybe I should have pressured him to go earlier. Maybe he'd still be with us. Maybe not. No point in dwelling on it.

Dad Loss I'm a med student who couldn't save her own father

Post image
428 Upvotes

My dad passed away from heart attack yesterday at the age of 58. I was away for med school and I just arrived a day later to see his wake. Before my flight, I took an exam and I couldn't stop crying every now and then. I've always envisioned my whole family to be there on my graduation next s.y. A week prior to his passing, he even joked that if I want to travel to S. Korea, he would want to come with me. Too many plans he had. He told me he's going to fix my bidet at my condo unit the next time he's there. I lost my father to something I've studied but I couldn't save his life. I'm lost in my grief.

Message Into the Void I miss you. Why did you leave?

Post image

It’s been over four years since a girl I knew in high school texted me that there was an emergency. Driving home from my job and getting that call. I stayed up on my front step In late august and waited for the police to come confirm what I heard.

Why didn’t you wear a helmet? Why did you go for a cruise so late at night? Why did you leave me and grandma and my dad?

You were there when Anthony died, you were there hugging me and telling me it was going to be okay. But it’s never going to be okay!
He’s still dead and you are too!

I sent your ashes floating down the river with your dad’s after he died. I never knew him but he killed himself in 2024.

Crazy to have the ashes of someone who never knew you.

You never got to meet josh. You’ll never see me get married. You won’t get a great niece or nephew.

You’ll never have a grandchild. What if jay and t get pregnant? You aren’t gonna be there.

I’m just rambling, I don’t know if I’m mad or sad or anything anymore.

I miss you. I miss Anthony. I just feel so hollow.

I love you.

Anticipatory Grief Sitting bedside as my dad dies is the worst pain I’ve ever had

My dad came a month ago because he fell and had a brain bleed. He improved and then a week later fell into a coma like state. They did everything and he never woke up. We switched to comfort support 3 hours ago and I was not prepared for the roller coaster of his death. It’s up and down and multiple times we thought this was the end and then he took a big breathe. I never felt this much pain or trauma.

I had to share this somewhere

Advice, Pls Nobody lets me talk about it

My boyfriend of a year and a half died the night before my 19th birthday. It’s been three years and I’m still very distraught. There was never a funeral or anything. I went to his parent’s house to collect some things of mine and some gifts he had been in the process of making for my birthday. He passed away from a drug overdose, we don’t know if he did it on purpose. There was never an investigation. His family has separated me from their lives, so I can’t talk about him to them. My friends say they get sad when I talk about it. My family didn’t like him, so they don’t like when I talk about it. I’ve tried being in one relationship since then and they asked me not to talk about old partners, including him. I don’t want to make his death about me, but I really love him and miss him and I want to talk about him.

Dad Loss Dad

My dad died 9 days ago and I don’t even feel like I’m on the same planet. I don’t even feel like I’m in the same body. I don’t even know why I get out of bed anymore. He was so sweet and supportive. His whole life he never got a break. He just gave and gave and gave. He never stopped trying. He suffered from a massive stroke 17 years ago and kept on. He was so genuine and kind. I’m just about to graduate nursing school. He was my biggest cheerleader and supporter the entire time. I envisioned him there at my graduation this whole time. He never doubted me. He’s the only family that loved me unconditionally. He’s the only one that would check in on me. He would tear up when we talked about life and told me how much he loved me. He was just so sweet. Now, I think about all the ways I took him for granted. It kills me. It hurts so bad. I don’t know how I’m going to be positive through this. I feel like the world has lost all of its color. Overnight, like the flip of a switch, I stopped caring about meaningless things. I don’t know how to enjoy anything. I feel so alone.

Does Anyone Else...? DNR

Has anyone here decided on DNR for a loved one who was in critical condition? They told us my dad would have a single digit chance of survival if he was resuscitated a second time... So we did what we were advised/what we thought was best for him. But I often wonder what if we'd resuscitated him the second time? Anyone else deal with this, and how the fuck do you deal with it?

Multiple Losses My brother passed away suddenly at 28

As title states, my brother collapsed at work out of nowhere and never woke up again. He had no symptoms of anything or pre-existing conditions.

I have no idea how to live in this immensely cruel and awful world. I lost my mum two years ago and my father has cancer again, for the second time.

I don't know how to have any kind of faith or hope for the future.

I'd love for some advice on how to cope with this.

Advice, Pls Feeling like I can’t get past anything

Not really sure how to start this

but back in June 2022 I lost my grandfather at 76 that was the first death I’ve ever been through so it really hit hard

and then in June 2024 my childhood dog passed away and after that I was hoping things would start getting better

And then in November 2024 my other grandfather was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and I was fearing of losing another family member and then in March 2026 he lost the fight to it at 64

And in July 2026 my great grandmother passed from cancer

And I’m only 23 so definitely a lot to go through the last few years

Also wanted to know if it’s common it go through this much loss at my age

It seems like I can’t get away from it and I’m not sure how to deal with all the deaths and I’ve put off talking about it because basically everyone I know hasn’t been in a situation like this so I’m hoping some people on here might have some advice to help me out

Dad Loss How do you as an atheist cope?

Partly looking for advice, partly venting. I lost my dad this year. He was just 58. A few months before his cancer diagnosis, I remember looking at him washing some dishes and thinking, my father's ageing. And so I took my phone out and took a photo, thinking about a day far far distant in the future when he would probably be gone and I will be alone. I didn’t think that day would come so fast. There was so much to do. I wanted to take him out on a vacation. I wanted to spoil him. All my poor dad ever did was work. All he ever did was take care of us, and I thought I would have my time, a lot of time, to honour him, to take care of him, that I would be able to give him respite. I wanted to learn who he was, as a kid, as a teen, as a young man before he became my father...

Without my faith in an afterlife, I know he is gone. I know he is not resting in peace, he is just gone. He is truly no longer. So all the things we didn’t do, all his pain that I couldn't ease, all the nights I didn’t call home just remain as they are. On his last days, he had bedsores, he was often alone in ICU, and was in so much pain -- that's what remains. There is no resolution, no making things better, no seeing him again, no comforting him and telling him I am sorry. I don't know how one even comes to reconcile with this fact. I keep myself distracted with work, social media and sleep. I can't even take a look at his photos...

Mom Loss I’m insanely jealous and angry

Of everyone who got/has more time than I did with their moms.

I’m 31, my mom had me at 39. She had my eldest brother at 21, second brother at 26, third at 32 and me last.

My brothers are 51, 45 and 39. It angers me to no end to see all the people who got their moms for much longer than i did. Today makes 30 days since she passed.

i know it’s silly to be mad about something so trivial and really it’s a blessing others have this. I just miss her so damn much. We talked every day, my son is only 8mos old. He’s my first and barely met her (she was very sick) and he won’t have any memory of her. I’m so lonely without her.

Aunt/Uncle Loss My uncle died. What do i do?

Post image
32 Upvotes

Last night I woke up to hearing my mom screaming outside. I've never heard anything like it. She kept repeating "This isn't real" over and over. She ran to the street and just kept screaming for about an hour.

My uncle (her twin brother) died. He was working at a haunted house with his best friend and dancing, when he suddenly collapsed and had a seizure. They couldn't revive him.

This doesnt feel real. I haven't seen my uncle for about 6 years. We had cut contact with him a while ago due to some issues he was causing. He was an alcoholic all my life. I believe his seizure is related to that. A little over a year ago, my mom started talking to him again after he almost died from being hit by a car. They have been able to form a relationship again and have been meeting up occasionally to hang out. He talked about wanting to see us all again. I thought I was going to see him around Thanksgiving or Christmas. I can't believe he's dead. I used to see him all the time when I was a kid.

We had all of these events coming up: My grandma's Halloween party, my mom's birthday, a vacation. Now, idk what we're going to do. My mom doesnt want to celebrate her birthday anymore, and I completely understand. I was really looking forward to the holidays this year because the past 3 years have been depressing. I don't think things will ever be the same as they were, and I'm devastated.

I'm dreading how sad life is going to be. My poor grandparents have lost their son, and my mom lost her brother. I miss my uncle. I wish I had gotten to see him again. Now life will go on, and soon 10, 20, 30, 40 years will have gone by. He is just a memory now. I knew he wasn't going to live a long life, but I didn't expect it to end now.

How do I support my mom? How long does it take to be ok again? And how do you cope with the fact that you will never see them again? I'm agnostic and don't really believe that there is an afterlife, but I really wish there was. How can this be it?

Anticipatory Grief Update: dad, then cat

My cat's tumor is inoperable. I am not even 2 months out from watching my dad die of cancer. Now I will have to see my cat die of cancer too. I cannot work, I cannot sleep. Everything hurts. I know I will get through this but goddammit the pain.

I can't stop thinking about my dad's last breaths and worrying that I will be traumatized all over again.

Grandparent Loss My wonderful sweet grandmother passed away a week and a half ago and god this is rough.

Her name was Arden and she was one of the sweetest ladies you'd ever meet. Hell of a cook too and she always had a funny story to tell. I never met her until I was 11 because she lived in South and I'm up north, but after she moved up here I'd spend hours with her even as a kid just listening to her stories and laughing with her and what have you.

I was with her for some of the last moments of her life. She wasn't very conscious, but I sat with her a while, and she finally passed around 15 minutes after I left because I had to go to work. Then I got the call and ended up leaving work to be with her and the family. My grandpa and mom were a mess. Grandpa was bawling his eyes out. I don't think I had ever seen that man cry until then. We remained there until the funeral home was able to send people to come get Grandma.

Fast forward to today, we had a family meeting at the funeral home where we got to view her open casket. She looked beautiful, they did an excellent job making sure she was ready to be laid to rest. The proper funeral is tomorrow. I don't know how well me or some of the others are going to hold it together.

This also comes about 10 months after the death of a close friend of mine, a woman named Judy. I'm glad both her and Grandma are in better places now. But shit. Fuck, man. This sucks. So bad. I don't know how to deal with never getting to see her again. I wish I wasn't lazy and took more time to hang out with her. And its got me thinking about mortality in general now. Assuming I live to old age myself, so, so many people I care about will be gone long before me, forever. Never to be seen again. And I hate that thought. I hate it so much. I wish I could unquestionably believe in an Afterlife, because that's such a hard thought to bear. Unfortunately I just don't seem to have a faith-oriented mind. I need proof. Logic. And as much as I call my hyper-religious family members nuts, maybe I really am the one who's cursed.

I don't know. Sorry for the text wall, I just wanted to get it out somewhere. My family members are all grieving in their own way so I don't want to burden them with this.

Delayed Grief I miss my mother

My mother passed away in May of 2004, over twenty-two years ago.

However, all it takes is a song, or a photograph to trigger me. I miss her so very much. I wish to God I could just have five minutes with her to tell her how much I love her.

💔😭

Dad Loss Physical Symptoms of Grief

Just lost my dad. Funeral was last Friday. Now that all the planning and arranging is over and he’s been laid to rest, I woke up today with actual physical aching (almost feels like I have the flu, but I’m not sick.) Anyone else experience physical symptoms of grief, and if so, how long do they last?

Ambiguous Grief The ancestors sent me a friend tonight

Post image
15 Upvotes

I am an immigrant, just found out a friend of mine from back home had passed away due to a rare and unexpected heart defect. We were mostly online friends, had only met in person once, but we both dealt with intense suicidality and the nature of our discourse was thusly often quite intimate. We were the same age. She was beautiful. Where I live now, I know no one I can speak with. I literally do not possess the language skills. There’s so much happening in the world, especially in the country I live in now.

I found the nearest Irish pub, despite trying to go back into sobriety, and the beautiful old cat is cuddling me, and I’m wondering if it’s just enough.

Supporting Someone My wife is on the verge of losing her older brother to a brain aneurysm. She’s never lost anyone before and I don’t know how to help her

This past Friday night my wife got a call from her mom saying her older brothers location was stuck on an intersection for the longest time and it changed to an emergency room and he wasn’t answering his phone. She drove down there where she found out he had pulled to the side of the road and called 911 for himself.

He’s been unconscious ever since. He suffered brain bleeding which was pushing down on his brain stem I overheard her say to her sister. His eyes aren’t reacting to light and there hasn’t been any good updates. Me and my wife just welcomed our first child together 6 months ago and I’m genuinely worried about her.

She broke down today when we got his truck. She also washed the clothes he had from the hospital but when she went to fold them she didn’t realize they cut them off of him. It hit her like a ton of bricks. She said she can’t handle this and won’t know what to do if she loses him. My wife’s family is super close. All the trips you can think of have been together. My brother in law has a 12 year old and they were inseparable. They did so many activities together. His parents also live with him and the mortgage is in his name.

In a three year time span I myself lost both of my grandmas, my cousin, uncle, and dad. My wife was with me and saw how I handled my dad’s death which broke me apart. But I feel emotionally cut off to anything now. I’ve built a fortress up for my feelings and I don’t know how to console my own wife right now.

Ang suggestions?

Dad Loss Today is 1 year since my dad’s first seizure.

A year ago tonight my dad had his first seizure and a year ago tomorrow is when we got the diagnosis of metastasized brain cancer. A few days later we found out it started as lung cancer. I lost my dad on May 23rd this year. 13 days after my birthday. I’m super emotional about this week. My husband told me that I shouldn’t be remembering the dates but why would I not? This week last year was horrible. Not only did we get my dad’s diagnosis but on the 29th one of my best friends who was an extra daughter to my dad lost her 17 year battle with breast cancer. I hadn’t heard from her in a few weeks and had no clue that she was losing her battle. I know I’m going to be extremely emotional all week. I don’t get why my husband doesn’t understand. He lost his dad 30 years ago and I know he deals with death differently. But am I wrong about being emotional and having my crying moments? This week last year started the worst 7 months. I miss my dad and I miss my friend. Normally my husband is super supportive but he just pissed me off last night when I tried to explain why I was dreading this week.

Vent/Anger - Advice Welcome I hate that people will discard you just because you deal with a lot

I’ve had the worst year of my life so far. I feel like no one cares and that people are just tired of hearing what I deal with. This is a summary of the bs I dealt with:

•my aunt died 5/20/26
•my dad died 5/21/26
•my cousin died 6/17/26 (my aunt above’s son)
•my uncle died (6/19/26) (my dad’s brother)
•my uncle who helped me with my dad’s hospice was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer (6/2026)
•I was harrassed amd bullied by a women who
Tried using my dad’s death to hurt me even more (August)
•I was assaulted by a man at a bar (10/2026)
•my brother totaled my car (10/2026)
•my brother gets arrested and now I may be evicted (10/2026)

I have zero friends who are there for me. My family isn’t there for me. The few friends I have told about my issues will ask how I’m doing then take 2+ days to a week to reply because they’re “busy” with work.

I deal with so much and I definitely am not the type of person to put myself in situations for bad things to happen. I literally have no control over this but I honestly have horrible luck.

I strive to be a good person EVERYDAY to EVERYONE around me! Im often told I’m too nice , yet I feel like the world is against me.

I have therapy but I’m so self aware even my therapist laughs because I know what my issues are, what to do about it but it’s just so exhausting to deal with. At this point I have therapy just to have someone who will listen and not be annoyed, bothered, or shut me down because they’re tired of hearing my problems. I don’t expect my friends to be therapists or to solve my problems but I literally have no support system. My mom is alive but we are no contact. I have siblings but we’re not close either. I have “friends” but as I evaluate my life I’m realizing they’re all just acquaintances and not what I’d classify as good friends.

I also want to note, I’m not the type of person to mope about saying woe is me, I also don’t like talking about my
Problems so when I do I don’t even go in depth I’m vague. But sometimes it’s nice having support

My life is just a mess and the only person who could make me feel better is my dad and he’s dead.
