TLDR: BCE and CE are often redundant, it may be virtue signaling, but it definitely makes things more complicated, without real change.
Being on Reddit a bit more frequently again, old peeves start to appear once more. I'm into art history, I studied that and while this discipline ends at around the end of the first millennium. You still need to know your Greek and Roman architecture, mythology and sometimes law. Just so you know, I'm not an archeologist but in a semi-adjacent field. In any case. I try not to look but sometimes something from history subs will pop up on my feed and it'll be like "Look at this thing from the tomb of pharaoh bla bla bla from 1500 BCE". Are you fucking kidding me?
Here's the first point: It's often redundant. BCE and CE stand for "before common era" and "common era" so, before and after the year zero. Typically nobody will think of an ancient Egyptian pharaoh who lived in the middle of the FUCKING RENNAISANCE! You don't need to add a BCE to that, but it happens a lot and I can't help but wonder if that's just a disguised "oh look how mindful I am of other cultures", which would be nice, if it wouldn't be so fucking patronizing. I also never seen anyone being offended by BC (before Christ) and AD (anno domini (in the year of our lord)). It's just a now largely arbitrary point of reference in time.
Second point: It's just renaming something that pretty much explains itself, which means someone now has to explain it. Imagine you are an educator, you are well meaning, but you have a valid use for BCE or CE and now you are askes "what does BCE mean?". Could be a kid or something who never heard it that often before. Before Christ basically explained itself, now you need to explain that it's before "common era", how it's an arbitrarily set date in time and then still explain that it originally comes from religious believe, because it's still using that assumed year of the birth of Christ. I myself am an apateist. I don't particularly care, but that's where it historically came from and renaming can't change it, it can only help to obscure it and that's just adding a problem, instead of fixing it.
Third point: It doesn't change a thing and the way things work is still broken. It has often been suggested to reset the year 0 to something else. This is nothing new. Why not actually do that? Why fumble around with terminology instead? I've seen someone suggestions anywhere between 5,000 and 25,000 years ago. Just pick one, preferably the older the better, so we won't have to deal with stupid "before and after point X in time" anymore. It's gonna be hard on a few Catholics, but future humans will thank us for decluttering.
Also, while we are at it: 28 day months and 13 month years as well as getting rid of time zones. Thank you.
