I can't keep working at my job

• Upvotes

I'm almost 2 months in at my current job and I don't think I can keep up with it. It's so demanding, anxiety inducing, and makes my symptoms worse. I was trying to stick around because it pays more than I've ever made.

I don't know what to do. I can quit and downgrade to part time in some other job with way less stress, but I'd feel like a failure for not being able to handle a career.

The stress makes things worse. I keep hearing them talk while I'm trying to focus on the job.

I did say I have a disability on my job application but I don't want to tell them what I have. I think I have to quit my job.

I feel like I let everyone down. I have a computer science degree and I can't even work in tech without having a mental breakdown.

I don't understand how the model where you sell your knowledge/expertise can survive and it terrifies me

• Upvotes

I feel like people don't realize how big of a deal it is that AI is this smart, or maybe I'm crazy? I think so far it's mostly hit devs (which most people are fine with let's be honnest) because most business see them as just a massive cost center, and in retrospect it's kinda absurd how much devs get paid just because they know how to code.

But am I supposed to believe that AI is smart enough to be better for example at math than literally anyone, but it won't be good enough to do the other jobs? I'm really puzzled, maybe a lot of people think math is just compicated computations so they aren't too surprised a machine is good at it?

Basically I think if your job is about dealing with the politics or the people side of things, or if it is really really important that there is someone to be mad at in case something fails you may be fine for a while. Or also blue collar jobs, at least until the robots get good.

But I genuinely don't see how the model where you get paid mostly because you know how to actually do something can survive.

Corneal Laceration

Anyone experienced corneal laceration? How many days it take to get clear vision? My doctor just prescribed an eye drop and ointment, the pain and redness have gone but vision is still blurry after 4 days.

'Outside' is feeling emptier everytime I go out and it makes me sad? Is it nostalgia or fear of an unknown future?

• Upvotes

Disclaimer: I don't live in America . We aren't car dependent, and we don't have big buildings, so when we step out, it always felt like there was always a crowd. Public transportation, hospital corridors, malls, any kind of government office... you name it , it was never quiet , it was never empty.

Through the years, internet took over majority of that face to face work , you rarely have to go to a government office for paperwork anymore, shopping is mostly done via internet. Schools, work, so many of them became online. Friends and family can reach each other anytime through their phones, so no need to meet face to face...

Also people aren't having multiple kids anymore, if at all. My grandma had 6 kids, mom has 2, I have none. My grandma had 15 grandkids, my mom has 2.

I stopped going out as much as I used to, because I also don't need it either. Yesterday I had to, I had to go to a government office, then had a doctor's appointment, then went to a mall , took the public transportation, walked the streets.

It all felt unusually empty . Yes, it's calm, people aren't rushing, but it felt lifeless and sad to me.

I am single, childless and work from home, so I previously thought that my loneliness was personal, it seems like everywhere is getting quieter. Probably I am overreacting but for some reason I didn't like it.

It feels like I'm in a liminal space in time

I'm moving back to Sweden soon. All my obligations over here in Japan are over, and so is the adventure. I can't afford doing any small side trips.

It feels like I'm in a liminal space of time, like a hallway before going to the official room. It feels incredibly strange.

No more tournaments or anything to train for (not that I've won any), no more upcoming trips, nothing.

There may be somewhat of a somber feeling since I came here to move here, and my life goal will go unfulfilled. But no matter.

Just had an open-ended job interview and I feel like I might have blown it

I just applied to this factory CNC operator position that has hours I really like. I love manufacturing work, and I've been super excited for this job. Today was my interview, and I thought I was totally ready. Usually I crush interviews. I think I've only ever had one job interview that I didn't get. I've gotten to where I don't feel nervous or bother to prepare at all. I just walk in confident and make it work. I've even had three different interviews where I went off on random tangents about world politics and I still got the job. (It helps that I've only ever applied for entry level meathead jobs.)

So I didn't think this was going to be any different. I walked into the interview room, shook their hands, and then they said "So tell us about yourself."

Nobody told me that that was going to be the whole interview. In all my entry level meathead interview experience, they always ask you questions like "What would you say are your strengths?" or "What would you do if the building caught on fire?" or "Why did you decide to apply for this job in particular?"

So I ask them "Uh. . . What do you want to know?" and they're just like "Whatever you think is important." So I just sort of explain that I enjoy working in factories before vaguely trailing off and mentioning that I recently took a trip to Japan. I THOUGHT THEY WERE JUST ASKING ME TO INTRODUCE MYSELF BUT ACTING REALLY WEIRD ABOUT IT. After I trailed off they just asked me why I left my last job and then what salary I expect, AND I DECIDED TO HIGHBALL THEM BY A DOLLAR.

I walked out feeling vaguely confused about the whole thing, and like 20 minutes later I thought of something I should've said and I was like "Oh man, I should've mentioned that when they asked about, uh. . . about. . . Did they ask me any questions? Wait, was I supposed to bring this up when they asked me to talk about myself!?"

Fortunately I managed to slip in a few positives about myself when they asked why I left my last job. Like I mentioned that I had a former manager seek me out and headhunt me into a different company to be his assistant manager. I can't imagine if they're going to read that as "Some idiot with a single unlikely story," or "Some competent guy who's profoundly terrible at selling himself."

I wish I could just walk back into the office and be like "No wait, I get it now. You wanted me to talk about myself. Yeah, it's a tough question. Took me a bit to wrap my head around it, but let me tell you about myself." At this point I'm just hoping that anybody else who applied is an even bigger meathead.

I hate the department of disabilities

I'm not a wealthy person, I'm not even upper middle income, my step son is 100% non-verbal, breaks all normal furniture, and has many expensive needs. Many of these departments are completely corrupt, they deny assistance for everything under policies that demand an insurance denial except respite care and diapers. What if your insurance has a 4000$ dollar deductible, but doesn't deny something? The department of disabilities DGAF.

They on paper award you money, knowing you can rarely use it. If you don't put your child in respite care because you have 3 others and it would be even more work to drive him there, and you worked 5 years potty training him, you don't qualify for anything. They literally take from my disabled child, to help subsidize medicaid for disabled children, even though the state is forced to pay for said children no matter what.

Making/Having friends

I've always been a bit shy around people and never had friends, for the last 4 years I haven't had a friend tho, l am 18 and I feel like I'm missing out when I see other kids my age going outside and having friend groups, I haven't had a friend that I can call and go outside with or just have a talk with, It also makes me feel lonely, In school kids are pretty mean to me, because they think I am "upper class" which I am not, I just have some nice stuff so first 2 years they bullied me, and they made me buy them stuff/food, which I never did, so school isn't really an option and I because l don't friends already, It is very hard for me to meet new people, I did sports before, but I don't really want to do anything sport wise at this point of life because I want to focus on school, l am also a very simple guy, the only things that I like are games, programming, music and cooking, so I don't really have stuff I can talk about with people just because my life are just these 4 things, I would also say that l am a pretty handsome guy, l am not tat or weird looking, and people also say that I am sympathetic, but people that I never spoke to say bad things about which I have no idea why people are like that, because l never talked to them.

I'm starting to realize that being an adult is mostly figuring things out as you go

I used to think that by the time I reached adulthood, I'd have a better idea of what I was doing with my life. I thought I'd feel more confident, have things figured out, and know what direction I was heading in. But honestly, it feels like I'm just learning as I go. Some days I feel like I'm making progress, and other days I feel like I'm falling behind, even when I'm trying my best.

One thing I've realized is that nobody really prepares you for how overwhelming the little things can become when they all pile up at once. Work, money, responsibilities, relationships, and trying to make time for yourself can feel like a lot to manage.

I guess I always imagined that there would be some point where everything would finally click and I'd feel like I had my life together. Now I'm starting to wonder if everyone is just figuring things out at their own pace and pretending they know what they're doing a little better than they actually do.

I'm curious how other people experience this. Did you eventually reach a point where you felt more settled in life, or is being an adult really just a continuous process of figuring things out?

You're on a long road trip, would you rather...

A: the second you turn up the music when it was just quiet, someone has to take an important call for 20+ min so you need to turn down the music.

Or B: someone has to pee so bad their bladder is about to pop every 30 minutes.

Cause it was both for me this road trip.

Am I the only one?

When texting I sometimes mistakenly spell some simple words wrong. I don't understand my brain. Is like it moves so fast than my fingers. Missing words in between sentences etc. And when texting you don't have the luxury to proofread every single sentence before sending especially on WhatsApp.

I once made a simple mistake when texting with a friend. I mistakenly spelt a super simple word wrong. I didn't catch it early to be corrected by this guy. Someone I perform better than in school. I was so embarrassed!!!

What is wrong with me?

For the past year, I've had the following (I'm 24):

- constant worries about my health and my parents and sister (specifically around ALS and cancer)

- hyper aware of symptoms and conscious monitoring and googling that I can't stop

- intrusive dreams about becoming a quadriplegic (or someone in my family) where I wake up shaking

- getting anxious about stuff like whether my twin's credit card will get approved and then when it does worrying about it getting lost in the mail

- replaying social interactions where I was socially awkward and trying to assure myself I didn't offend anyone

- after i leave the house I was babysitting at, I become concerned that the child passed in their sleep and wait until I get the call from them or police (ex. toddler brought a piggy bank into bed, I took it out and no coins spilled, but what if one did and she choked?)

- scared that my parents will stop breathing in their sleep or that they'll go into cardiac arrest and I won't be home

- suspicious when things are going well, feeling like something bad is going to happen

- anticipatory grief about my parents dying

I can’t wait for self driving cars

I would pay any amount of money for my own personal waymo like car.

I’m not talking about Teslas “FSD” supervised driving bullshit, I mean a real autonomous car.

Imagine waking up and your car is pulled out of the drive way, ready to take you to work. Then you can watch videos, read a book, fucking whatever until your destination where it drops you off and finds a parking spot.

Need to go to the airport? Your car can drop you off and then return home.

Drunk at bar? Have your car pick you up.

Roadtrip? Take a nap in the back seat!

No more circling the block for parking, just drop me off and find a free parking garage a mile away.

It’s the one piece of tech that really makes me look forward to the future.

Im very curious about your opnion on this situation!

I have always had a very good life. Ever since i have been young, my family has given me everything i have ever wanted. So why do i feel so sad and feel like i lack the attention that i truly want? I never thought of making a reddit account until now and im sitting here writing this wondering if this is truly worth the time. I have never been fond of reading tweets and reading in general so here i go. When i was younger my family always made sure that they gave me everything i had asked for. Although my mom did not have a lot of money, she still made sure me and my sister had stuff. For some odd reason, i slowly drifted off and felt like i was not worth being there. If i can remember, these thoughts started when i was about 10 years old. This is also the time that I learned that i could tal to people online and tell them about my thoughts and feelings. I ended up online dating and nothing bad came out of it. Yes we would break up and i would be a little sad but i got over it. I also made some real friends along the way as i played roblox. I had many friendgroups, relationships, and even online "parents" i could look up to. In real life i was very normal and i would say popular so i was not sure why i was so weird. After my mom stopped paying attention to me and focussed more on my sister, i started learning about subcultures like shtwt, edtwt, and nsfw things like yaoi and porn. I also started talking to people way older than me and they would get me things on royale high and other roblox games. After that "era" was over, i moved to discord and joined problematic servers which got BOTH of my accounts banned. I know that is a good thing but after being in such egative communities for so long i feel that i had no one to talk to once my two accounts got deleted. I also started hardcore cutting myself as a way to cope.I am now older and still feel that i am not enough. I feel that i am ADDICTED to things that can ruin my future.

Has anyone else had the same problems or can they relate? i just really want to have someone be able to tell me what i should do. I have als started anxiety medication not too long ago and it has helped but what are things i can do in day to day life to make me feel better.

What actually does make someone a bad person?

What actually makes someone a bad person? I often wonder this about myself, because I easily get frustrated and can often be an angry loser. I often feel alone and often berate myself for such mistakes as my goal in life is to be a good person.

So I know what is to be done to be good, but I am lazy and fail to correct my mistakes despite knowing what must be corrected. Impulse and general unhappiness and loneliness stops it every time. Sometimes it isn’t even that, it’s just adrenaline. So, using myself as an example, does that make me bad as a person? Or just lame and shitty?

On the other hand, i have met people who have committed horrible crimes, who have lied to extreme extents and who have cheated on their partners.

I have also met people who are so kind and loving, but who also have intense gossipy streaks and extremely judgemental personalities. I have met people who constantly put others down for their own enjoyment (I’ve been on the end of that a good few times), but also hugely kind and encouraging people who have had incredible bursts of anger and have ruined relationships with it.

I guess I’m having a nit of a crisis of personality myself, as my anger and impulsive behaviour is being worsened by loneliness and is pulling people away from me. But what actually DOES make someone a bad person? Because it’s so grey for me, and some people who I love have been deemed bad despite me thinking that they are alright. It’s just something that is very complicated for me, and I would like to understand further. Morality is a strange concept.

Not all romani were gypsies, not al gypsies were romani. They sprawled across many countries Including Ireland where they weren't romani..

so I have No idea what to call the nomadic people that dressed like witch hippies since its sprawled across different nationalities, and ancestry .. and there is technically Not a name for that specific demographic ..outside, Nomads , that some find offensive. It Don't exist . You say Nomads, you don't think that Specific. Bc there were so many types, including jews at the time.. So WTF Do I call That Clothing Style? It Ain't Romani!! Romani s Many Things .. not Just gypsy, which is many nationalities, ancestry across Multiple places that Are Not that ..

There ain't a name for that ..it don't exist. So How Tf do I talk about that, when it's not ONE people.

Romani =/= gypsy, gypsy =/=romani. There were Irish gypsies As Well .. How do I talk about it. What do I call ancient traveling witch hippies that everyone gets what it is when I say one name .

You should be both overwhelmingly emotional and detatched in your life

Be emotional when it comes to love, when it comes to showing appreciation or gratitude towrads the ones you love. Be feeling when it comes to loss or sorrow or pain. Be felling when you need to be.

Be detatched when it comes to your work or responsibilities. As in act like a robot, you do things you don't like to do sometimes and you do them like you love em.

I find this simplifies life and makes even the hardest parts enjoyable yk?

When people say always stay curious.. doesn't have to be about serious things

Yes, it's good to know what you're saying, and Yes, you're always learning, Yes the mind isn't a cup that has a limit of filling .

But, if you find you feel you've searched to what you could, you've done your research, etc etc.. no one says you can't deep dive, something fun. Do a full plot outline of family tree in Harry Potter.. something.

It means, not ignoring the little twinkle or twinge, saying.. I wonder if.. Look that up. Find out. Don't have to do research about serious things, 100% of the time.. why are some eggs brown, others are white ?

Obvious answer might be, different chicken breed but You might've not known that.. look it up. No ones chastising your search history ..you can Google whatever, and not look like an idiot ..no one looks at that, except maybe your friendly neighborhood cia agent. But even then, he's probably bored half the time. Look up something interesting ! .. but not too concerning like, bombs, etc. And now I've used both cia And bombs, I'm on a watch list. If you never hear from me you know I'll be abducted. Thank you .

It’s my birthday today, but I feel unusually sad. Why have I always felt this way on my birthday?

Today is my birthday, and for some reason, I feel really down. I can’t even fully explain why.

The strange thing is that, as far back as I can remember, I’ve almost always felt this way on my birthday. It’s supposed to be a happy day, but instead, I end up feeling sad, empty, or just disappointed for reasons I can’t quite put into words.

I don’t know if it’s the expectations I have for this day, the feeling of getting older, reflecting on my life, or something deeper that I haven’t figured out yet.

Does anyone else experience this? Have you ever wondered why your birthday makes you feel this way, even when nothing particularly bad has happened?

I’d really like to understand where this feeling comes from and why it seems to follow me every year

When someone brings up non related issues, then you know you’re winning the argument

I used to work with my aunt and our family owned restaurant. I always found my aunts management style to be very unorganized and bizarre at times. She often let her staff come and go as they wished and never punished anyone for being late or anything. I worked there as a server and would be the only one who’d come in on time and consistently but often times, this meant I had to take on most of the work.

This created issues at times and I often butted headed with my aunt. I was also the account holder for the tv and internet service we had so often times when we got into an argument, her standard defense was to tell me to “cancel the tv and internet.”

This often happened when we’d argue about things completely not related to the tv or internet. I’d often argue with her about staffing issues and how she takes off too much work and how it was upsetting customers since it would take longer for them to get their food. I’d also constantly tell her that the cooks were not following local health codes and anytime she got frustrated with me, she’d tell me to cancel the tv and internet.

“If you don’t want to piss off your customers then stop taking on more than you can handle.” I said.

“Ok fine. Then cancel the tv and internet.” She’d say.

“What does that have to do with this?” I’d ask.

“I don’t know. Just cancel it.” She’d respond. Was this suppose to upset me? I never understood why she would say this but it makes me believe that her was her way to finding any reason to win an argument.

I’ve come to learn when someone brings up non related issues, it normally means that you’re winning the argument.

Any thoughts?

trying to decide if i should quit smoking OUID (any advice welcome)

I'm at a point with weed where i smoke it to feel good BUT i do it so often that I'm starting to get concerned. While that hasn't really affected how much i enjoy getting high, I'm starting to want to just be consistently happy and not rely on weed as a pick me up all the time.

it concerned me the most when i tried to go without it for a day or two and it felt impossible to see my life without weed. i Realize this is a problem in itself but my biggest concern is...

WILL i be able to be happy regularly after becoming so reliant on marijuana?

Like i do it right after i get off work, right after im done getting ready in the morning on my days off AND im smoking all day on the days im off.

I'm confused because i want to believe that I'm "just one of those people that weed works for" but at the same time i think people that tell themselves that are lying to themselves because they're deep in addiction.

i still enjoy smoking it but i think my potential is being snubbed becuase im smoking it.

but at the same time im worried that ill still be the same person after i stop smoking.

so im finding it hard to tell if i should quit or not.
