Some questions will not be answered or replied to. As an example: "my game crashes" or "my download speed is slow" is not something you should even really expect an answer to. Troubleshooting and finding the solution to these issues requires a lot more information than simply stating "game doesn't launch", such as detailed information on when the issue started and how you perceive it, screenshots of any errors or the problem itself, crash logs, system specs, etc.

Consider using other things like the Steam Community Forums, an internet search engine, or a different support forum like /r/SteamSupport if no one here can offer any help. Game & Hardware Suggestions Megathread /r/Steam Monthly Game & Hardware Suggestions Thread.

Welcome to the Monthly Game & Hardware Suggestions Thread!

This monthly mega-thread is meant to contain advice, questions, suggestions & generic discussion on what to play or buy in terms of Games & Hardware.

Do you not know what to play? Want a Steam Deck or Steam Machine but unsure which model is best for you? Did you find a niche game that everyone should try? Wondering what GPU you should upgrade to or unsure about the specs of a computer? Do you want to share your unique experiences and learning curves with a piece of hardware? Can't find the perfect survival sim or unsure which 1 RPG out of the thousands available you should buy? Well this is the thread for you.

Now to make this work best and not just be spammed with generic & useless questions such as "What should I play?" or "What should I buy?", please be in-depth in what types of games/hardware you are looking for and why, and when giving advice it would be appreciated if you're more detailed than "I think X is good".

There are too many games to be able to properly suggest something with no background information, also simply commenting a game title and saying you like the game offers no actual value. The same goes for hardware: Saying you're thinking about buying X or you think Y is good with no other information, context as to why, your unique experiences, etc. offers no actual value or information to base a reply on.

Feel free to ask and discuss freely in the comments regarding games and hardware, whether you want advice on what to play, want to give advice to others on what to play, share a hidden gem you found, experiences you have with Steam hardware, or your review of a piece of Steam hardware. Generic discussions & questions about discounts, sales, events, specs is allowed as well. This is not meant to be a restrictive thread within the designated topics that this thread is for, however it is not a support thread nor is it the place to promote any blogs or curator pages or anything else, subreddit rules still apply.

Previous Megathreads.

Discussion While Youtube is pushing to remove the Dislike button, Steam lets you see a detailed graph of reviews.

I feel like this feature is extremely underrated. It really lets you track exactly how users responded to the game at launch and at different events (patches, upgrades). Its like the only actual democratic place where people can share exactly how they feel about entertainment, instead of being forced to like it.

Discussion I want to appreciate the absolute freedom of the Steam Deck

I was more of a PC guy, cause at the time, i just liked the power and how much i could do on the PC. Like playing a game on one screen and having a guide or Spotify on the second screen

After i got Steam Deck, i mostly played games that are platform games like Rivals of Aether or Gravity Circuit.

But then i just started messing around with the Steam Deck and good god. The stuff you can do is nuts, especially when you compare it to other handhelds like Switch.

It may not be a big thing, but i really appreciate the freedom what we can do with the Stean Deck, like changing covers of games (first pic), changing boot up intros (second pic), modding games like on PC and such.

It's just so good i love it

Question Game release

Quick question? How can you prevent your game from being stolen/copied? Like when you announce it or release a demo of your game as an indie developer or big studio?

(For example the needle in haystack game that has been copied on steam and copied on roblox)

Discussion Complaints about AI aside, what were peoples wishlists/standouts from NextFest?

Despite the overwhelming amount of garbage, I still managed to find quite a few little indies to keep tabs on and see how they go post-release. These were some of mine

Dreadmoor

Ravenous Greed

VAL'TY -

Birds of Impalatism

Kopernicus: Incremental Suffering

Baby Lemonade

TETRIC

JOHN GLEEP

Clown Around

Death of the Brain

Heroll: IF

Share what stood out for you

EDIT: There's no obligation for you to say you didn't find any games in a thread asking what games people found. If you didn't actually engage with NextFest, then this discussion isn't for you

Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.

I guess I won't be using it for a long time, till I buy the new game, that is.

Question I need help finding the origin of my Steam avatar, White wolf/fox in a black suit

It has been a while I am trying to find the origin of my steam avatar profile picture, and yet I have no clue of where it belongs. The only info I remember of it was it being recommended as a default steam profile picture a long while ago.

I remember there was other profile pictures with the same style (probably from the same game). I did not have luck on reverse search it on Google.

The only similar image i have found of it was a korean post about a wolf called "Clyde".

"Clyde lives on the Rogue Road, but he is actually the youngest son of a Double Downtown Mafia family. He is intelligent but physically weak, so he does not participate in family events except for major occasions. He commutes to a respectable job located in Rich Gold City. After accidentally meeting and becoming friends with Freda and Scavi at a party, he finds himself in a subtle love triangle."

The fact that both are nearly identical suggests that I’m getting somewhere, but I’m still far from a lead or an answer.

I did a similar post about 2 years ago that did not have any comments, so i hope this time i get a clue or answer.

My debit card does not work with verification, so while I can't buy 18+ games, I have had no problems accessing this dlc for a month. I haven't found any other games that let me see the store page nor can I see this on another account which makes me think its only possible if you own the base game.

Question Question about bundle discounts

So a lot of horror games have discounts and I wanted to pick up silent hill f and fatal frame, both of them are on discount but they have a developer bundle for both games together but that one is more expensive than if I were to buy the 2 games separately...

Does this still need to be adjusted cause the sale is recent or is it there a rule or something with steam discounts where bundles aren't affected? Obviously I can just buy the 2 separately and its still a good price but you'd think the bundle would be on discount to be even cheaper

Error / Bug Mouse detected as 5 separate controllers

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My ROG Chakram X keeps giving me issues when playing FPS games like Valorant or Arena Breakout: Infinite. It suddenly snaps straight up or down and shoots one bullet. It is random and happens every 20 minutes, sometimes once per hour. It lasts only one second and can then be moved normally. In Warframe, it makes me walk in one direction indefinitely, depending on which WASD button I pressed at the moment it happens. The only way to fix that is by unplugging and plugging back the USB antenna. I want to remove the controllers from Steam, but I cannot; there is no option. When I unplug it, they are gone, but as soon as I plug it back, the same thing happens. I cannot find a setting to disable Steam Input either.

Discussion The AI problem everyone is glossing over

2.5k Upvotes

Aside from the huge influx of slop making steam next and the store unusable there is a bigger issue.

Genuine developers are no longer able to release demos or early access for player feedback. Lucas Pope won't discuss his next game and Indie studios cancelled demos (Edited from Toby Fox cancelling demo, I misremembered the article linked below)

Why? AI studios (that proponents of AI would say are producing the "good AI games") have been decompiling demos or just burning tokens to get their models to scrape the demo and get a pixel perfect clone(edit for all the strawman arguments - I mean art close enough that people interested in the original demo don't realise they're buying the copy). Then they feed it into their enterprise llm account and fire out the IP theft before the creator has a chance to publish. This results in them stealing a huge proportion of the audience and killing the visibility of the real game on release. I'm talking about playable games following a shallower loop than the original but with enough there to fool a lot of people until past the refund time and not disclosing the use of llm generated assets.

This is not a conspiracy theory, look for "needle haystack" and try to find the original. This is just one of the games. Yes there's slop but theres also 2-3 games where you'd be hard pressed to find the original. I guarantee the top 10 non AI games played in this next fest will have clones release in the next 2 months.

This is why we need an AI filter, otherwise Indie development will die or, at best, have to move to curated game stores.

Edit - Apologies I misremembered it was Lucas Pope not Toby Fox and it was him keeping details of his game secret, not cancelling a demo. It was part of an article about demo cancellations. Linked here for clarity

Suggestion Why don't we start tagging games that use Gen AI with "Generative AI"?

Hello everyone! If we organize ourselves and start appropriately tagging games with the aforementioned in the title, it can potentially be popular enough to appear as a tag on Steam, and be used as seen as fit for those who'd want to exclude such games in their store, while those who don't care just simply don't have to do anything at all.

Also, I've been noticing that the "Artificial Intelligence" to tag games made with Gen AI, and I think that's a terrible idea considering it's also used for games with AI as a central theme, such as games like Steins;Gate. Popularizing the Generative AI tag would fix that issue as well. It is this issue in particular that actually made me think of the idea in the first place as I had noticed it while going through my Discovery Queue.

Lastly, please refrain from using this post as a point of debate on the validity of using Gen AI, it's ethics, or whatever. We already have a lot of that plastered all over this subreddit anyways, so you can take a peep on those posts instead for that purpose. The point of this post is to provide a legitimate solution to a problem that clearly we all already know a lot of people have been complaining about for a long while now, and to foster discussion about the suggestion itself in hopes of potentially implementing it, improving it, and/or to provide more suggestions.

Please share your thoughts!

EDIT: I see a lot of repetitive comments, so I'll include those here every now and then to reduce the redundancy of commenting it over and over again"

"Can be too easy to abuse" "People can make mistakes"

I think everyone is aware of this, and the reality is it happens regardless of whether this idea is implemented or not. Though do be aware of the tools used in combating this by developers, and that even users themselves can report the misuse of tags by clicking the + icon at the tags portion of a game and then clicking the flag icon.

"How can you know if there is AI involved?"

The most obvious basis would be the AI disclosures that exist in steam pages where the developer is transparent enough to declare such, but then what happens when no such disclosure exists? The real answer is that there is no true answer, and is really determinant on the active participation of the community to ensure the correct tags are there. That has always been the reality of the tag system, and is a flaw that has to be accepted rather than doing absolutely nothing. For the amount of tags you've seen misplaced, there are more that have been corrected, even if it's hard to notice.

EDIT EDIT: Please read the last paragraph of the unedited portion please oh my god

Question Depot downloaded with console still takes up storage, how do i delete it?

I tried downgrading hogwarts legacy, but while i was downloading the depot for it i realized i didn't need to for what I was trying to do, but all I could think of to stop the download was closing steam. However, the 70gb it needed is still being taken up and I can't for the life of me figure out where it is, I deleted my entire depotcache folder but that only had like 20gb total and even WizTree can't find where the data is. Hogwarts legacy is uninstalled on steam as well, any help would be greatly appreciated

Question What strategies do you use to find "hidden gems" or the good stuff in the Steam Next Fests?

The Steam Next Fest just ended, and it's the first time I've ended up disappointed because I couldn't find the good games among so much shovelware, AI slop, or low-effort asset flips games.

So while we wait for Steam to fix this problem with their events, I wanted to ask you... What strategy do you use to find the best games, or the hidden gems, in each Steam Next Fest?

Do you use the filters? The charts? Do you go looking in the sections that Steam recommends?
