Harry Potter Survey Results & Final Decision
Alright crafters, the results are in! There’s a TL;DR at the end of this post, but we did want to explain how we got here and the choices we’ve made along the way, too. As a quick recap, the mod team noticed a pattern of off-topic conversations and uncivil conversations whenever someone posted crafts related to Harry Potter, and members of the community raised concerns about allowing such content in the subreddit. It was compared to hate speech, due to JK Rowling’s increasingly vocal bigotry and use of her political, economic, and social platforms to further that agenda, as documented here and here. We knew there would be no perfect solution to this problem, and that anything we did would leave some people feeling hurt and upset. But we felt it was important to address the issue, so we asked the community a little bit ago in this post about what they think we should do, and we discussed it as a team as well.
While some commenters opposed the idea of banning it, those discussions were largely centered around concerns about whether it would lead to more censorship. In our experience, posts about other “problematic” topics and IP do not lead to the same level of off-topic conversations and arguments that Harry Potter posts have. Additionally, Rowling is causing a significant amount of concrete and widespread harm towards entire marginalized communities, and as members and supporters of those communities, we felt that removing her influence from this subreddit should still be on the table. So, we created a poll to get simple, concrete feedback on one question: To ban, or not to ban? We limited voting to accounts that were at least 60 days old, and had at least 50 Reddit karma and 10 community karma, in order to keep it to community members and try to avoid brigading for either side. So, here are the results:

As we can see, it wasn’t a complete landslide in either direction, and those who voted definitely tended towards strong feelings on the topic! After gathering 1,232 total votes, 53% of those who voted in the poll are in favor of banning posts related to Rowling and Harry Potter, while 41% of voters are against banning it. Our intention with this post was to gather feedback on the community’s feelings, because comment sections alone aren’t always representative of a full community, and we wanted to give those who aren’t comfortable commenting or aren’t well-spoken a chance to speak their minds. And it seems like the results are pretty clear! While there’s a decent number of people who don’t support Harry Potter posts being banned, the majority certainly does seem to support this ban - as do the members of the mod team.
So, what does this mean for the subreddit? Well, crafts that are directly related to Harry Potter can no longer be posted here. If your craft isn’t obviously Harry Potter, and you don’t reference it at all, you can still post it - for example, a red-and-gold scarf is perfectly welcome, so long as you don’t describe it as a Gryffindor scarf. Wands are fine, even if they’re similar in style, so long as they aren’t explicitly “inspired by Harry Potter.” But a papercrafted Hogwarts, or a replica of a specific character’s wand? Not allowed. We are currently working on updating the wiki in general, and will add a page about this ban in the wiki, including informational resources like the ones posted above and guidelines on what is and isn’t allowed. But generally speaking, any identifiable reference to Harry Potter is going to be a no-go, and moderator discretion will be the ultimate decider on what is and isn’t considered “Harry Potter-related.”
This also doesn’t mean we’re planning to start banning all kinds of IP and inspirations - as stated earlier, we found that Harry Potter posts generated far more issues and conflict than any other IP, and no other IP has been raised as a concern to the same degree. We talked about it, and while we all have companies or creators that we as individuals don’t love to see discussed in the subreddit, no other topic has been so universally controversial and caused so many problems from a purely logistical moderation standpoint. If, in the future, another similar issue does arise, we will handle that as it happens. We may not ask for feedback in the same way, because to tell the truth it stretched the issue out and caused more stress than we meant it to. But for right now, no other topic seems to be causing so many problems both within and outside of the subreddit, so we have no current plans to ban anything else.
Comments on this post are locked, as we don’t want to encourage debate about this topic. We had plenty of that in the original feedback post, and at this point we’ve made our decision. However, if you would like to clarify any aspect of this new rule, or you still have questions about why we chose to do this, please feel free to reach out via modmail! Please also note that we’ve had a couple of mods leave recently, bringing the team down to just four of us. While we are adding new members to the team soon, it’ll likely take us a bit to work out all the kinks with this new rule, as it does with any change to the subreddit! Please be patient with us in the meantime, and remember that the mods are people too, and we are all dealing with our own issues and responsibilities irl.
TL;DR After a community vote, and much discussion from the mods, posts and discussion about Harry Potter and JK Rowling are no longer allowed in the subreddit, and will be removed going forward.

Finished Craft I Made I finished my dogs shrine today (mixed textile arts)
This was a combination of needle felting, hook latch and purchased lighting with a healthy sprinkle of glitter.
The “galaxy” fit perfectly within a shadowbox that I purchased, and I strung the lights through the back. The moon is another light that I purchased but other than those things and her urn everything else was made by me over the course of several months.
She was very loved, so I poured all of my love into this project. She was never a fan of the dark, so I made a cozy place for her to rest where it is always magical!
No filters- this is exactly as it appears in person. If anything, it looks a little more enchanted.
I am so proud of this project! It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever made and she was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever known..
Edit: I also painted the cheap moon light to give it a bit of a glow!

Holy shit this one took a lot of work! Just wanted to show it off because I put a lot of time and energy and joy into it- once I got started I couldn't put it down... 7 hours later, the real moon was out, the final handmade jump ring was closed, and I was wandering around in a daze feeling like I'd just emerged from a hollow hill.
I'm usually not great a photographing my pieces but I think I got some okay ones.

Finished Craft I Made Pink ruffled lingerie set🌸🪡✨
Hello everyone! 🌷
I’m from Canada, I love vintage fashion, and designing lingerie is my passion.
I wanted to show a set that I made in 2021.
It’s a wireless padded bra with matching high-waisted thongs decorated with ruffles and bows.
Materials used:
lace, mesh, cotton jersey, satin ribbon, straps, scalloped elastics, bra foam lined with cotton jersey, wire channeling, closure, sliders, rings.
I’ve never actively shown my works before.
What do you think of this lingerie set?

Finished Craft I Made I made this tiny beetle jazz band — my little entomology art experiment
This started as a silly little creative experiment I’ve been tinkering with lately.
I’ve always loved odd, whimsical natural art, so I decided to build a tiny woodland jazz ensemble. Every beetle here is prepared, posed, and mounted entirely by my own hands. I fitted each performer with these miniature brass instruments — saxophones and a French horn — then set them onto small tree slices I collected, to give them their own little forest stage.
Putting them together was trickier than I expected. Getting each beetle balanced just right, lining up the tiny instruments, and making sure everything stayed in place took a lot of slow, careful work. Each one ended up with its own subtle pose and personality.
I really enjoy the contrast between the deep, glossy shells of the beetles and the bright, shiny little brass instruments. It feels like they’re all about to start a quiet jam deep in the woods.

How-do-I Tuesday How would you go about getting foam to adhere to fabric?
Asking for a friend!
She’s trying to make a simple pair of fawn legs, so she has a pair of leggings and just wants to add some padding out of foam. Seems more like upholstery foam to me?
Helped her get the padding shaped out, no problem
Probably is the foam if a bit thick and where it’s flat on the bottom it doesn’t want to bend properly over her legs to be able to adhere it properly
This is more of a quickly put together costume, not something super high effort, but I’m trying to still help her have it turn out the best it can!
Should I carve a bit out of the back of the padding we made so it’ll fit over her legs better?
Also what adhesive would be recommended for getting the upholstery foam to adhere to fabric? She was attemptingggg to use hot glue and it’s not really working out
(Ik these aren’t exactly the proper materials or anything, I have a bit more experience with stuff like this BUT since it’s kinda rushed/minimal budget I’m trying to figure it out)
Basically needs to be like the image below, just more minimal padding

Holiday/Seasonal Craft How do I fix my late dogs’ paw prints in these hand made ornaments, please?
Our little Gator suddenly got very sick a couple months ago and deteriorated quick. My family and I had been considering euthanasia given the circumstances and the appointment got hopped onto me last minute. I had planned to make ornaments of his paws (the bottom have our other little dogs paws too) to remember him by so I ended up whipping these up last minute. I made the clay following a TikTok recipe; 1/2 Cornstarch, 1 cup baking soda, 3/4 cup water. Combine all, stir over medium heat until mashed-potato esc., knead, and roll out flat before printing their paws. The creator said they air dry best as opposed to in an oven, so I did, but it’s been a few days now and they came out like this. I’m so disappointed. Can they be saved? How can I fill in and/or fix the cracks please? I want these to go to my family and I and last for as long as possible, they were made in a rush so they’re not perfect but I did follow the recipe as closely as possible.

Discussion First test with shrink plastic flowers🌸
Today I tried to make for the first time some flowers with shrink plastic... but not having a heat gun, I had some problems making them three-dimensional (especially the leaves) because it cools down immediately and I didn't have time to shape them😭
I'm also quite satisfied with the result but since I would like to make others I'm thinking of buying the heat gun... is it worth it or is there a way to be able to shape them well even without it, using the oven instead?

Finished Craft I Made I turned a child's drawing into a rainbow cube cat with needle felting! 🌈🐱
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi everyone! I'm a needle felting artist from Taiwan~
I recently finished this little rainbow cube cat, inspired by a child's drawing!
The idea actually started when a relative saw a needle-felted charm I'd made based on my son's drawing. Her child loved the rainbow colors and wanted a rainbow body for their own little cat too!
I had a lot of fun experimenting with different materials for this piece. The heart-shaped nose was originally a little heart-shaped eye I found at a craft store, and I made the eyes myself using clay and paint.
I also had some colorful sprinkles lying around and thought they'd make a cute addition to the design!
But the biggest challenge was definitely the cube shape!
I thought using pre-made wool balls as a base would save time, but the wool kept compressing as I worked. I had to repeatedly add more wool to maintain the shape, and the colorful surface layers kept getting pushed deeper into the base.
Getting everything smooth, square, and colorful took so much more work than I expected!
In the end, I spent over 8 hours making this little guy. It was challenging, but I genuinely enjoyed experimenting and figuring things out along the way.
And honestly, I almost didn't want to let this little cutie go! 🥹
I'm really happy with how it turned out, and I hope you enjoy watching the process!
I'd love to hear about your experiences too. Have you ever made something that turned out to be much harder than you expected?
Thanks for reading! I'm looking forward to seeing more of everyone's amazing creations here! ❤️

How-do-I Tuesday How can I improve my lab’s homemade by-hand vial shaker?
Hello! I wasn’t sure where to post this question originally, but I feel like this is crafty enough to go here!
I work in an environmental lab and for my particular method we are only allowed to shake our samples by hand. (Trust me I wish this wasn’t the case but it’s the EPA). Since we have ~30 samples per batch, we have resorted to making shaker out of foam, cardboard, tape, and a dream. (I’ve provided a little sketch of what we have since I cannot take pictures in the lab). It’s long and can fit about 35 60 mL sample vials that have ~2.5 cm diameter. The inside is a kind of foam with holes for each vial and cardboard all on the outside.
The problem is that it’s not very durable and we have to tape it closed each time we shake it. This wouldn’t be too much of an issue, however we need to shake, add something to vials, then shake again— making the process very annoying in gloves. Every couple months we have to reinforce them with more cardboard since the shape warps a lot. I’ve been trying to think of ideas on how to improve this.
My question is, what material would be best to make a more long-lasting device? It still needs to be fairly lightweight so we can still shake it. I also wonder if there would be a way to have some sort of latch holding the 2 halves together? It’s also important to note that the device CANNOT be made of plastic, as my method cannot involve any plastic in the process. Does anyone think something can be 3d printed? I’m open to all ideas, this isn’t something my job asked me to look into, I’m just sick of tape getting stuck to my gloves lol.
Thank you in advance!

How-do-I Tuesday Untwisting yarn
Hi all!! I came up with a very last minute and very labor intensive halloween costume idea for Cousin It. The cheapest way I came up with to make this happen is by using yarn but untwisting each individual strand by hand is,,, incredibly time consuming. I've also tried used a cat brush but it's doing more to pull the individual fibers out instead of brushing it out so it looks fuller.
I've considered throwing it in the dryer but I imagine that will just leave me with a big tangled mess. Does anyone have any tips or tricks for untwisting yarn? Thanks in advance!

Machine Question Tips for button pins?
Hi art community!
I bought a button pin maker for a side gig and I thought maybe you have tips on how I should avoid on making it rust? I made a batch from a small event and I checked that it rusted on the side. I saw some plastic consumables (where the pin is) and planning on buying it but have doubts.
Any tips and many more for a beginner? 🥲
Thank you!
