Discussion I upcycled empty acrylic paint bottles into tiny pearl-covered magnetic vases — which neck style looks best? 🌸

Post image
• Upvotes

I've been saving empty glass bottles from acrylic paints, and I finally decided to turn them into something cute instead of throwing them away!

I cleaned them, covered them with white pearls, attached magnets to the back, and added little bows around the neck. I'm going for a dreamy, pastel look, but I'm still experimenting with the finishing touches.

I'm trying out three styles:

🎀 Pastel ribbon bows — pink, blue and green

🧵 Natural jute rope — a more earthy, rustic look

🌷 With or without a tiny faux flower? I'm wondering whether to include one or leave the bottle empty so people can choose their own flowers.

I'd love some honest feedback!

Which neck style looks the prettiest: pastel ribbon or jute rope?

Would you prefer one with a faux flower, or an empty bottle that you can style yourself?

Does this feel more like a cute fridge accessory, a mini vase, or a small handmade gift?

I'm still figuring out the final design, so I'd genuinely appreciate your opinions. Which version would you pick? 😊

Discussion Direction for Stitching

Hello All!

For Christmas this year, my idea for my partner is to get them a sauna hat, and I’d like to hand-stitch their name and a detail or two onto it myself.

Because I’m not sure what the best method to accomplish this would be, I wanted to pose the question to the internet. I don’t expect a lengthy typed-out response, but I would appreciate being directed towards helpful tutorials, or even just defining the actual name of the method I should use to stitch this!

This wouldn’t be considered sewing, right? I have very basic sewing and patching skills, and that’s about it. Willing to try and fail, my partner appreciates that sort of effort.

The attached images are the hat in question, as well as the details provided by the seller.

Thank you!

Discussion Could someone help me identify how to best search for a replacement of this hardware piece?

I am pretty handy with Google Lens and googling in general, but sometimes it only gets you so far. And this piece of hardware is eluding me!
It was originally hooked onto a fancy pair of pants as decoration, and I now need a replacement for it…
I’ve been able to ID it as a stainless steel split D-ring but all of the ones coming up on Google don’t have a gap this wide. Would it be possible to use a pair of pliers to stretch a regular split D-ring into this shape? Or do I need to be looking for a more specialty item?

Discussion How could I attach coffee stir straws to clothing without ruining the clothing?

Post image
212 Upvotes

My toddler is going to be a porcupine for Halloween, and I made his costume using coffee stir straws hot glued to some fur (I followed a tutorial from another woman who did this—that's the pic attached)

I have a bunch left over and want to randomly stick them onto my husband and my's clothing to look like we've been stuck by our porcupine, but I'd love to not permanently ruin the clothes and be able to just remove the "quills" after Halloween. Obviously if I used hot glue, this would not be possible. I don't think tape would be strong enough.

Any ideas?

I’d like to be mysterious and let those who don’t know watch and wonder what in the world this thing is… but I also don’t want to ostracize you 😂

This little guy is from the Brakence album “MarroW”cover. It’s an effigy doll

I’ve been enjoying the music so much I decided to make this art of it for myself. Made in punch needle embroidery, it consists of yarn blends that include alpaca silk, wool, and acrylic. Backed with firm felt, and adorned with 3 magnets

It currently sits at the center of the wall that accompanies my stairway, and looks very ominous

I ended up using the smallest real button I had. The photos are the backward progress of my work. He's pretty dang cute if I say so myself, so I'm not sure he even needs glasses. He's a Christmas ornament.

Finished Craft I Made I hated the closed ecosystem of commercial storyboxes (like Toniebox), so I learned electronics from scratch and built this open-source screenless MP3/Radio player for my kids.

Hi there,

Last summer, my kids tried a commercial storybox. The user experience was amazing for a toddler, but the business model drove me crazy: every single story is a mandatory purchase from a closed catalog. You aren't buying a player, you're buying a subscription hidden inside a plastic toy.

I’ve been a software guy for years but knew absolutely nothing about electronics (aside from owning a soldering iron that I used once every three years). I decided to fix that and build a custom, open-source alternative for my three kids.

How it works:

  • Inside is an ESP32 microcontroller, an NFC reader, a custom PCB, and a Li-ion battery.
  • When a kid places a wooden figurine with an NFC sticker underneath, the audio starts instantly.
  • It serves its own local web interface over Wi-Fi to upload custom MP3s/M4As and link them to figurines.
  • It can stream live web radios (like Toddler podcasts). It handles OTA updates automatically over Wi-Fi with a safe roll-back feature in case the network stack crashes.

The learning curve was steep. I managed to create a short circuit with a potentiometer that ended up smelling like burning ski wax, accidentally ordered the wrong voltage regulator that almost blasted 13V into a 3.3V rail, and realized my kids would violently unscrew any volume knob until the wires snapped inside (switched to brass inserts and thick 3D-printed walls!).

I spent weeks moving 491 copper tracks by hand in KiCad to design the PCB and had it manufactured by JLCPCB. The final box was printed on a Bambu Lab A1.

The project is entirely open-source (MIT License). If you want to build one or check the build logs, everything (3D files, schematics, firmware) is documented here: https://github.com/Zebra-Rodeo/marelleo

Full build story: https://zebra.rodeo/en/blog/marelleo/

Happy to answer any questions about the hardware, KiCad struggles, or the firmware!

Material Monday How to make pins with only the backs??

Post image

When I ordered some craft supplies they also sent me these pin backs (I believe they are) for free and I would love to make pins, however they didn't sent me anything else and I also don't own any pin making supplies so I would like to know if there's a way to still use then without keeping them sharp or them looking weird. Thanks!

How-do-I Tuesday how do I change these white bunny ears to dark gray?

Thumbnail

I couldn’t find bunny ears in a specific gray color that I wanted so I bought rit charcoal gray dye. eventually I figured I couldn’t since the ears are made of 50% plastic & 50% faux fur.

I was thinking maybe buying a faux fur fabric and gluing it around the ears, but I’m nervous I’ll mess up.

any inexpensive ways I could alter them? they don’t have to be the same exact color, just close to it.

How-do-I Tuesday How would you go about getting foam to adhere to fabric?

Post image

Asking for a friend!
She’s trying to make a simple pair of fawn legs, so she has a pair of leggings and just wants to add some padding out of foam. Seems more like upholstery foam to me?

Helped her get the padding shaped out, no problem
Probably is the foam if a bit thick and where it’s flat on the bottom it doesn’t want to bend properly over her legs to be able to adhere it properly

This is more of a quickly put together costume, not something super high effort, but I’m trying to still help her have it turn out the best it can!

Should I carve a bit out of the back of the padding we made so it’ll fit over her legs better?

Also what adhesive would be recommended for getting the upholstery foam to adhere to fabric? She was attemptingggg to use hot glue and it’s not really working out

(Ik these aren’t exactly the proper materials or anything, I have a bit more experience with stuff like this BUT since it’s kinda rushed/minimal budget I’m trying to figure it out)

Basically needs to be like the image below, just more minimal padding

Machine Question Tips for button pins?

Hi art community!

I bought a button pin maker for a side gig and I thought maybe you have tips on how I should avoid on making it rust? I made a batch from a small event and I checked that it rusted on the side. I saw some plastic consumables (where the pin is) and planning on buying it but have doubts.

Any tips and many more for a beginner? 🥲

Thank you!

How-do-I Tuesday Untwisting yarn

Hi all!! I came up with a very last minute and very labor intensive halloween costume idea for Cousin It. The cheapest way I came up with to make this happen is by using yarn but untwisting each individual strand by hand is,,, incredibly time consuming. I've also tried used a cat brush but it's doing more to pull the individual fibers out instead of brushing it out so it looks fuller.

I've considered throwing it in the dryer but I imagine that will just leave me with a big tangled mess. Does anyone have any tips or tricks for untwisting yarn? Thanks in advance!

This was a combination of needle felting, hook latch and purchased lighting with a healthy sprinkle of glitter.

The “galaxy” fit perfectly within a shadowbox that I purchased, and I strung the lights through the back. The moon is another light that I purchased but other than those things and her urn everything else was made by me over the course of several months.

She was very loved, so I poured all of my love into this project. She was never a fan of the dark, so I made a cozy place for her to rest where it is always magical!

No filters- this is exactly as it appears in person. If anything, it looks a little more enchanted.

I am so proud of this project! It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever made and she was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever known..

Edit: I also painted the cheap moon light to give it a bit of a glow!

How-do-I Tuesday Best glue for cardboard and paper

Basic question!!

I’ve always used Elmer’s glue-all but figured I’d stop in here and see what yall craft heads have to say on the matter!

Trying to ensure it lasts and trying to avoid wrinkles. It’s for a Halloween decoration, glueing matte, uncoated cardstock and a thinner paper weight to cardboard.
